Ummm. Did you have to pass through a bathroom to move from the dining room to the kitchen? I believe this was originally a butler's pantry. That would explain the door to the basement. The room with the back stairway, directly off the kitchen ,would most likely have been a breakfast room.

What an absolutely fabulous and charming house! It needs a lot of work, particularly updating the kitchen and bathrooms, but this is my dream style. This place reminds me in *sooo* many ways of my great uncle’s home where I spent a great deal of time when I was growing up, from the sunken living room to the sun room to the windows to even the red carpet. The house style was very different, and was actually modeled on a real castle he saw in France during WWI, but it also had very thick stone block walls, and seriously hefty and thick slate shingles.

Lovely Tudoresque home. As for myself? I hear tell that a particular Italianate Victorian-right next door to a Queen Anne style Victorian home-on High St. in Peoria IL is simply BEGGING to be covered by your team's studied & well developed eye for style & design. Another plus: the pair of homes in focus are across the street from (almost certainly) the most beautiful example of an Oak tree to be found in the entire state.

Scottie dog by the front door. Great room with wood paneled fireplace. Turret & diamond window panes. View of the river. All great. The flow is a bit odd (noted comment about butler's pantry now a bathroom), and kind of a lot of stairs up and down. It appears to be on much higher ground than what I see across the river. Would it be above high-stage flood level? These things are scary to me. High and dry here on a granite hillside. A fun tour, Ken.
@ThisHouse2 жыл бұрын
It's the kind of house that you can get lost in for a moment, but it certainly is fun to get turned around and discover new details. It is well above the high-stage flood level. I don't have it's exact elevation, but it sits much higher than most of Alton, IL.

@@ThisHouse Thanks! Nice to look over the rooms again. The lay of the land near rivers really varies. Our San Diego river runs past a shopping mall (which it flooded back in the early 80s) on its way to the sea. I've read a lot about the Oregon Trail, and Pony Express routes, and what it took to cross the Missouri, the Platte, and the Colombia. It's fun to see other parts of the country and learn the history. History & House Nerds Unite! :)

Here's hoping the next family will lavish as much care and attention to the home as the departing residents did. The exterior gives off the impression this home is offering much to the to the right imagination as the interior is a work in progress, denoting a lot of work especially for someone with a more abundant imagination. But whatever the state of the house there is nothing that can beat the words: "With a view over the Mississippi River!" Hang the Hudson and the Potomac, to hell with the Allegheny and the Monongahela and you can forget about the Missouri and the Arkansas, because nothing can beat a home with a view, over the mighty Mississpp'!

This is an adorable little home that is in need of a lot of restoration. That being said the veiws are breathtaking and the property is so beautiful! Definitely something I personally would live in, the architecture is unique for sure and a bit quirky! Which is what I love about it. It does need a loving touch to warm up all the spaces. Whoever lives there now is bland and kind of tasteless! The first to go is the gaudy red carpet on the main stairs, ewww! I could do wonderful things to this!!!

It was bought for nearly a million dollars and they have a high HOH fee in that area! That's a charming house! And a great review as well. The only thing that gives me pause is the proximity to the river. Although I cannot note the true elevation of the house relative to the river, it seems dangerously close and not high enough.
