10:20, That plastic thing over the glass window, some people in Sweden had a name for that. ”Bögtrappa”. Translation: ”Gay staircase” I’ll never forget that evening when my father came home with an almost brand new 900 Turbo. It was 1985-86. It was late and i had school the next day, but my dad promised a ride on town following evening. The next day in school was the longest ever. I just had that Turbo in my mind. In the evening after dinner we went out for a drive. It was magic for a 7 year old boy to see that boost gauge needle entering the yellow area, and feel the acceleration and the sound of turbo spool up. The next day my dad drove me to school, while my classmates came in Mazda 323, Volvo 140, Amazon, etc. My dad had a 900 EMS, 99 LE, 900 Turbo. R.I.P, my father. He’s been gone now for 25 long years. 🥺

The purple 1972 99 LE, shown at 10:43, was from North Dakota and came to us with the original Saab accessory luggage rack on it. It was not rusty, but not running. We got it running and realized that this car was only the second purple one we had ever seen--when we first started with Saab in the mid 1970's we had had a purple 1972 parts car that eventually went to the crusher. I have tried to research the color more and it seems there were possibly some 96's of the same color, but looks like only 1972 models. We stripped and repainted the car approximately 15 years ago. Interior is all original, soccer balls added by us to replace ugly steels, but seems it could have actually come that way in Europe as an EMS--we didn't get the EMS in the US until 1973! My dad, Chuck Andrews, bought 4 of the last chrome wheel opening moldings on a trip to Sweden, but they never made it onto the car, per the photos! Not sure where they ended up, but that would make the car complete!

Love those Saabs especially the 2 strokes and 900s. In 2011 in Saab’s liquidation, I could have bought a beautiful new java brown 9-3 conv. with no warranty. The dealer wanted 41k. Not in the budget back then. Thanks for posting!👍

The Friction tester was a 1980-1990 system to test for icing on the runways in airports. In between the planes landing- and taking off, It took a fast ride down the runway, lowering the wheel and measuring the friction on the runway. It was really the only way to check for icing and therefor a key-contribute to the safety back in the days :) Thanks for the videos and walk around. Now taking a ride in my 9-3 Aero for some dinner :D

Had a few 9000’s back in the UK years ago, my favorite was the Griffin V6 3.0. It had the typical oil leaks from the warping of the plastic valve covers but I rectified that by replacing them with alloy ones from a Vauxhall Vectra V6 (GM UK vehicle). They were the exact same valve covers only the Vectra ones were a way better fit due to being alloy instead of plastic.

A little history on the Jerry Seinfeld (as you put it) Monte Carlo 850. I purchased that car unrestored from a guy in Covina CA in 1997. It was not running and the transmission destroyed internally. With a bit of help from Bud Clark (J&B Imports, Orange CA) I got it on the road. Over the next several years, the interior was redone, I had paint and bodywork done, re-chromed all the brightwork, etc... and enjoyed the car until around 2008. I sold it on Ebay to a guy who in turn sold it to Tom. I have many photos to the reconstruction still. Who knew it would be a museum piece. I did it to restore a bit of SAAB history. My first SAAB was a 1958 93 I had in high school.

Thanks for bringing this to us, Jacob! Great content. Lots of cool cars. That red race car with #2 looked like an ant eater! The Vail PD also drove Saabs for years, too. Definitely like the newer Sonnet and 9000 designs. Cleaner and more aerodynamic. Good to see so many earlier 2 stroke models. My dad almost bought one of those in the 60's, but couldn't get past the mixing oil & gas.

Thanks for sharing this video. Didnt know it even existed a SAAB museum in the US. Very nice cillection indeed. You mentioned something why GM gave up SAAB. I beleive some reasons are related to culture. In many aspects Swedes and Americans are so far away from eachother, and especcially when it comes to business culture. In Sweden you allow free thinkers, and as i have experienced, in American companies its much more top down. That went to a crash in This GM adventure. Moreover, European car buyers are more into details. Thats why no one almost went on the trick buying a Cadilac based on a SAAB or a SAAB based on a Subaru etc. but honnestly it also have to be said that SAAB had difficulties to pass 100 000 cars per year which made it difficult to build cars with sustainable profit. You must come to Trollhattan in Sweden and feel the atmosphere in the “real” museum. 😊

That rebuilt Viggen was done by Jerry Danner at Mile High Saab in Denver before retirement became too attractive and he closed the place down a couple of years back, just before the 'Rhona virus. What can I say? Gutted. The paint on that bonnet/hood was applied, I believe, by DJ, at Mile High. Best paint guy I have ever seen. The work he did on matching and applying paint on my car for the under body-kit refurb was just astonishing. Attention to detail better than a Swiss Watchmaker. He now inspects houses. A true loss to the Saab community. The Grey 'Aero' 9000 has the first generation 'Airflow' kit - hence why it has that Aero plate on it. It is fundamentally the same kit as applied to the 89/90 flat front Carlsson, but there's no headlight wipers. No idea why the nut-cover inserts are not the same colour as the spokes. The 900 with the testing wheel in the back - you almost answered the question you posed yourself by noting the friction meter in the front. This is an airport vehicle, used for testing the runway friction to ensure the runway surface remained within specification.

In the 60's a resident of the Isle of Wight decided that it would be a good idea to put an early SAAB two stroke in a BSA motorcycle. The result was the SAABSA. I've ridden it, it's a mess. SCS in Wilmington recently donated it to the museum. Look it up I think you'll find it fascinating.
