@@TankTheTech he even messed this up too (in a funny way) 🤣 (Regen-)Schirm means umbrella (Bild-)Schirm means screen. The saying in German is about a (digital) screen and not about umbrellas 🤣 and it originates acutally from working as an air traffic controller... If you have something (i.e. an aircraft) on your screen, you can ensure a save route/flight/trip whatever, so you're saying that you are taking care of something :) 🤘

@@showmeyourcritz321 So it's actually the same - "Do you still have it on your radar" is basically when in German we say "Hast Du das noch auf dem Schirm". The "Schirm" being short for "Bildschirm" - a "radar screen" :-)

I honestly do, otherwise I wouldn't be working for them. I'm in a fortune situation where I can now pick and choose who I want to tour with. Back in my younger years of touring, yeah, I took some of the gigs because it was a job and I had bills to pay. But with every band, I always grew to a point where I genuinely liked and cared about them.

I was really starting to think that David is just playing his bad English but the sentence "Do you still have the tablets infront of your umbrella" just kills me as a German. The word-to-word translation is "Hast du noch die Tabletten auf dem Schirm?" which means "Do you still have the medication in mind?". This is a truly "not the yellow from the egg"-moment and I love this!
@TankTheTech
@TankTheTech Жыл бұрын
For the most part, his English is good enough that I could have full conversations with him and know exactly what he was saying. At times he did have to stop and search for the right word, or ask if I knew what it was in German, but not a lot. But every now and then, these situations would happen with a question like this where it was just SO wild that I couldn't help but laugh. It reminds me of something they told me English speakers often mess up while ordering in German at fast food places when they accidentally say "Can I become cheeseburger". Hahaha

The become/bekommen mixup is actually quite interesting from the linguistic point of view. Such pairs of words are called "false friends" - although they sound similar and are even written similarly, their meanings are completely different (some other examples are gift (EN)/Gift (DE) or embarrassed (EN)/embarazada (ES)). Thanks for participating in this short Linguistics 1.1. course 😅 Also, when you think about it Tank, you and David would be perfect for tandem language learning!

@@TankTheTech The problem here is that he tried to literally translate an idiom in addition to not actually knowing the origins of it. A correct literal translation would be "do you still have the pills on your screen", which, while a bit weird, would probably have been understandable. Schirm in this case is short for "Bildschirm", which is what you're looking at while reading this. It doesn't have anything to do with umbrellas in German, either.

I guess the thing about this band is that they started as some dudes that just liked to hang around and do some music with each other. And that type of band they have been for years. Well Nico is "new", but from the old footage it seemed that they also picked him because it just did click with him was well. And they managed to keep this attitude till today and are just amazed about whats happening at the moment - I mean filling all this not small clubs in the US and even bigger arenas here in Europe and run a production on that level is also new for them. And this attitude just makes you chilled and grateful - and of course triggers your own inner play child, because now you can bring things to the stage you have always dreamed of. Guess that is what has formed the spirit of this tour.

I taught German for a bit in the Aberdeen region. I really loved the way you had to sleuth around in order to understand some of the mistakes that the students made. Dude I don't know about Denver, but Toronto was insane with the crowdsurfers, I was at barricade and we barely had a moment respite, and Dajoe couldn't get in there to shoot because of that. The whole venue had a sheen of moisture/sweat covering every single surface at the end, disgusting. And Montreal, in comparison, brought the GOOD TIMES. The crowd was so hyped, the most excited I've seen in years, singing, dancing, clapping, stomping, chanting "ohé-ohé" before the band even came on. It felt so good, it was so much fun, and positive! At barricade again and it was way more manageable in terms of crowdsurfing. I also remember Bollo posting a story about how he loved Mtl's energy. Had the chance to speak with the boys and they are the most absolute sweethearts I've ever met. They are so nice and attentive and like for sure when you they this band and crew are the vest you've toured with, I can 100% believe it. I do think David's English is the most endearing thing, but for sure he plays it up in vlogs, when we spoke he was doing really good I thought. Omg Lily kicks ass, she was not playing around with the VIPs and I really appreciated that. A real pro! Don't say things like cancelling Canada shows 😭😭 my poor heart, even though it obviously didn't happen Oh yeah after the show in Montreal (so 4th in a row) Kevin said he was glad of a breaking cause he was straining. That's a tough schedule, 4 in a row! So the hairdryer thing is not just a bit? Omg 😂 And it was great chatting with you too Tank, and thanks for everything, the stories, answering the questions, many happy returns and I hope when the guys come back, you'll be part of the team again!

as a German guy, I would literal translate "auf dem Schirm" as "on the Screen". But I kind of know why he said umbrella. A "Schirm" is mostly something that covers / shields / protects something or Someone. Regenschirm = Umbrella → covers you from Rain (DE: Regen) Sonnenschirm = Parasol → shields the sun (DE: Sonne) Fallschirm = Parachute → protects you from damage caused by falling (DE: fallen, Noun: Fall) Lampenschirm = Lampshade → covers the Lamp (DE plural: Lampen) and shields the light Bildschirm - Screen → In case of the Bildschirm (Screen), the "Schirm" refers to the surface on which the image appears. This surface serves as a protective device for the image, shielding it from outside influences such as dust, dirt, or damage. It also creates a boundary between the image and the viewer. Germans often abbreviate "Regenschirm" to "Schirm" in cases were it's obvious. They also do this with "Bildschirm". If Bildschirm (Screen) = Schirm & Regenschirm (Umbrella) = Schirm, the mix-up is funny but explainable :-)

This is _such_ a great video. I love all the stories, but one thing jumps out at me. If it was really Excedrin, I hope someone told David to be careful with the dosage. If you take too much acetaminophen, or take it with something else that has acetaminophen in it without realizing, or if you combine it with alcohol, it can do a lot of damage to your liver. I mean, it's safe. There's no way it should be a prescription medication. But for a headache after a night of drinking, absolutely do not take Excedrin. Regular aspirin is better in that case, and don't take more acetaminophen than it says to on the label. If he still has that bottle, PLEASE tell him to be nice to his liver. I'm assuming the EC boys all drink, and anyone who drinks potentially not knowing that worries me.

Fun fact or pro Tipp from me as a dad: we used a hairdryer to get our little daughter to sleep. It’s the constant monotone noise which let her relax and fall asleep. Same works with a vacuum cleaner.

I really enjoy this channel and listening to some of your content even though I’m not on metal head, I’m definitely more of a country music type of guy that will listen to other forms of music because like you have said multiple times, music is subjective and I know what I like and I know what type of music I don’t like I do like Those videos that pull back the curtain just a little bit on the music industry. I find that very interesting.

Hi Tank, I would love to see a video about what all a tour manager does. Also, are there unspoken rules or superstitions about touring?

There are definitely unspoken rules and some superstitions, but they can also differ from tour to tour.

Here in Denver we always get crazy crowd surfing shows. Another band that played at the Mission Ballroom last year told us during the security meeting that they've only had 1 crowd surfer on their last show. At the end of the night we were told we had over 200 lol. Said band is about to play again here this weekend.

@TanktTheTech You should really do a Vacation in Germany, especially around Castrop-Rauxel, Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg (Ruhrpott region, its kinda like the Detroit of Germany. This would be the closest comparison that comes to my mind). Mostly nice people there, a lot of sightseeing stuff (like a whole Steel Plant in Duisburg, a Mine in Essen etc.), well and you'll probably learn to open a beer in 256 different ways.
