I live in Taiwan and this story is indeed big news here. I should point out that as part of a group tour the man would have had insurance as every member of any group tour from here has to have insurance. Taiwanese tourists rarely travel independently and are almost always part of a group. The hospital would have had no problem being paid. As the unfortunate man was unconscious, how did the hospital know he was a foreigner? Outwardly Taiwanese and Thais look quite similar. This kind of incident really does damage Thailand's image.

My opinion after 6 months in Thailand: most people are nice but there is an extreme focus on money. I’m unsurprised. I took my friend to a very nice private hospital for surgery and the staff followed her and me I think to ensure we did not leave before payment.

There was a 15 year old kid that died in Chicago. He was playing basketball across the alley from a hospital. Less than 100 feet away. But the nurses and docs wouldn’t leave the hospital and for some reason an ambulance wouldn’t pick the kid up because he was too close to the hospital. Someone shot the kid in a drive by. Ended up that patients waiting in the ER themselves ran out and dragged the kid into the ER but by that time he had bled out. Nobody got called to the mat for it. Kid bled out in plain sight of docs, nurses, cops. Nobody cared. Just another day in the city

@@Deadpool-hm7io cops were waiting for the ambulance. It was some sort of screwup with the 911 dispatch. The hospital being rigid with their rules. Cops not willing to transport due to their own rules. Total perfect storm of clusterf^ck. And sadly this kid was just caught up in it. Kid was just shooting hoops by himself and paid a horrible price for the apathy and indifference of multiple agencies and bureaucracies. Cops were even yelling at each other about helping him/not helping him . Some cops wanted to load him in their cars but the SGT wouldn’t let them. Said to wait for an ambulance . As I said. Patients commandeered a hospital gurney. Loaded the kid on it and rolled him to the ER door. But by then it was too late. Honestly he may not have made it even with timely aid. But he wasn’t even given that chance.

ีI am Thai and am saddened by this incident. But I would like to say that this incident has happened to Thai people as well. This should not happen, but it is understandable that the conditions for treatment in private hospitals refuse treatment. This hospital must be punished. But it is true that this hospital is not representative of all hospitals in Thailand, where most of them are fully committed to providing services.

My Thai friend is a nurse and she said she must assist at an accident to help save a life. So, decision by the supervisor was illegal. She was at a scene with a critically injured man. He was dying. This is the highest priority for medical staff. Cannot delay. I hope supervisor goes to jail and family sues her.

I've been traveling to Thailand for over 20 years and plan to retire there. This incident doesn't accurately reflect the Thai people. Thais are some of the nicest and most compassionate people I've met. Every country has an element that cares more about money than people; Thailand is no different. However, the majority of Thais aren't like this. When I lived there, I got incredibly ill and had no family to help me. My Thai neighbors took care of me like I was family.

That's absolutely disgraceful. How can they refuse to treat a seriously injured person. Having been hit by a vehicle he should have gone to the top of the list for treatment, no matter what nationality. A B40k fine is laughable, they could make that much treating a few uninsured patients. Surprising a Bkk Hospital would allow this to happen. Doubt Bumrungrad Hosp would allow something like this and tarnish it's reputation. To send an unconscious patient to another hospital 10km away is totally unacceptable.

There are a few reasons, they could be short staffed, there could be 5 more critical patients waiting for treatment in the queue, the doctor that specialised in the tourists injuries may already be tied up and sending the patient to another hospital may have seemed like the best solution at the time.

Truly shocking and inhumane treatment by the BKK Private Hospital - if those reported allegations are true. They are obligated to save lives. Surely there are criminal charges such as negligent manslaughter if it can be shown by autopsy examination, that the patient would have likely survived if treated at that time and unnecessary delays caused his death. Absolute shame on them. This should be broadcast worldwide on national TV channels.

Those who are covered by the Social Security Healthcare Scheme & Universal Healthcare Scheme can be treated at any Government Hospital for A&E but for anything else the have to use the Hospital that is allocated to serving the area were they are registered as living & to use another they need a referral or they have to pay.

Scam story for Tim: my khun thai girlfriend got a call from a "police secretary verifying her identity" telling her to wait for a call of an officer, a short while thereafter a "police officer" then video-called her all with a fake police station pc, uniform, flags, kings picture and all, telling her about a severe scam that she was allegedly part of, sending her pictures of stolen credit cards and videos of people being arrested, juicing the story up and playing the bad cop, threatening her with immediate arrest should she not comply. And then to finish it. off, he introduced his police captain, aka good cop, "helping" my girl on how to get out of the predicament. It was all too convincing for my girl and yes, this story ends with her transferring money to the "cops" as evidence of some sort, it doesn't make any sense unless you understand the obedience of thais and how well crafted scams put you in a fear-trance.

She then provided her own smart phone number, my phone is not smart. She then provided ALL her personal info to the caller, I tried to warn her it was a scam. I had to go out, 15 minutes later received a frantic call that she was under imminent arrest, I told her it was a scam & go to an ATM & check balance. Her ac had been cleaned out, B86,000. Told her to report immediately to police, with contact details used. Police did nothing except inform of 3 other recent victims. Next day reported to bank, who did nothing, not even providing details of who/where the funds went. I had dengue in Vietnam admitted to hospital 10 days . No problems with insurance payments only they wouldn't admit me or continue with treatment until confirmed by travel insurance but apart from that everything went smoothly. Was admitted to Hanoi french international hospital the doctors were brilliant with me but the admin a bit of a headache they just care about payment and money 💰I do believe the total bill came to around 8,000 to 10,000 dollars

I’m Vietnamese, Việt - France hospital is PRIVATE HOSPITAL, it expensive!! Mostly rich ppl can affordable treatment there. Middle class can treatment there too if they buy good insurance!! If ppl buy NATION PUBLIC INSURANCE L, they must go to public hospitals running by gorvement taxes & funds. Not in private hospital. Even locals know & act like this!! Don’t understand why many Western & foreigners keep saying no matter what, even ppl have no moneys or no insurance private hospitals should treatment!! It just bussiness, they’re not working for free or charity!! I don’t understand why US & WESTERN KEEP CLAIM THEYRE DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY BUT NOT UNDERSTAND SIMPLY LOGIC LIKE THIS!! I’m not saying it’s right, but this is how life going & it how it work. IN US & WESTERN, Asian tourism don’t get treatment if they have no moneys or dont buy insurance!! they get kicked out & must call back in their family & frienfs send money there to get treament. ONE OF PEOPLE I KNOW, he’s IT ENGINERS, his mom buy AMERICA tour BY TOURIST COMPANY. One eldery lady get sickness & shes not buy insurance, and it need done process right in moments!!She calling home, asking husband & 3 children (all adults & working) & borrow moneys from family & friends then send for her 50.000 USD, so she can get treatment!! If this process treatment done in PRIVATE HOSPITAL IN VIETNAM IT TAKE AROUND 7.000$ and if treatment in PUBLIC HOSPITAL IT OF COURSE MORE CHEAPER!!

Because artificial fertilizers are produced to give better growing conditions than compost. Plus, the labour involved in producing and cultivating the compost into the soil would increase the cost of production which would increase the cost of the end product, this can be witnessed when you go to buy organic food, the prices of organic veg are 20/30% higher than fertilized grown veg.

Those who said it is Thailand, the land of smile. People think only about money. Let's me clarify you: Not all foreigners who comes to Thailand have health insurance even the travel insurance. Who will cover all these expenses when sth happen to them? Thailand isnt the place for charity!!! Tell me which countries offer everything for free to local or even foreigners? Being a Thai in Europe, i have to struggle every things to pay for a tax, many bills, Nothing is free here too. If you guys think Thailand is not the right place to visit, to stay, please go to try in Africa, South America or even some countries in Asia. You can let me know you experience the roses in other countries. the neighboring countries like loas, cambodia and burma, the ppl who are poor come to Thailand who dint even manage to pay the medical bill, it costs us million of dollars. Who will cover the bill for Thai ppl. The west, the UN the NGo????

i'm sorry for all the bad negative comments about Thailand. I love Thailand and the thai people. Since it's so nice, good weather, safe, fantastic food, used to be very cheap, all in all very comfortable, has led to many bad people from the west coming to Thailand. I know that about Sweden anyway, too many swedes going to Thailand that should never have left Sweden to begin with. Many of them bitter people in Sweden, they think their lives will improve if they only come to Thailand... but... they still have the same shitty personalities. So what Sweden couldn't help with, neither can Thailand. Their problem is inside their soul, whereever they are in the world.

In the US every hospital is legally required to treat every emergency case, without regard to insurance or even whether you are legally in the country. If our medical system clears the bar, then it's a pretty low bar. It sounds like Thailand has the same rules and this hospital was in the wrong. Similar cases happen in the US, and hospitals get in trouble when caught.

Very troubling story regarding the failure to provide care at the hospital. Shameful. I am sure there are many dedicated people who work within the health care system who are embarrassed by the incident. And many others who should take note, they should not be associated with the work of caring for others if they are following such policy. Not only is it unprofessional, but downright disgraceful.

Allianz, biggest insurance company (I think globally).. Just show your card and insurance plan... No problem. 4000 THB gets you 2 million. If they need to spend more in the emergency room... You have probably zero chance to live. If that isn't enough to get you stabelised, an other 5-10 or 20 million would not make any difference.
