Tourists behaving badly at Hanauma Bay Hawaii

When tourists visit Hanauma Bay they have to make a reservation and attend a video presentation on preserving the reef before going down to the beach. As soon as they get there they start walking on the reef. This is killing the reef and destroying it for generations.

*How this happens:* It's not complicated. These people don't live on an island/near the ocean, and likely aren't water adept. They're finally getting the chance to see beauty they've only dreamed about but quickly realize adventuring in the ocean is harder than they thought. So instead of giving up, they stand up on the reef "for just a few seconds". It all comes down to the fact that alot of the tourists who do this stuff either aren't good swimmers or don't really know how to snorkel. And they're trying to brute force it.
@bobcoggins6557
@bobcoggins6557 10 ай бұрын
I understand the individual person that does not know. I take many people out to learn how to snorkel. The problem is Hawaii receives about 35,000 visitors each day. Let’s say half are not familiar with the reef ecosystem then the effects on the reef is devastating. Those of us trying to educate people become overwhelmed especially when people become angry when they are told. But we keep trying.

Kanaka here. I can’t express to you enough how pissed this makes us locals/Hawaiians. I tell people every single time I go to the beach to stop standing on the coral. Besides the fact that coral can slice through you like a warm knife through butter, you’re standing on living organisms and nearly destroying them if not entirely. You are visitors to the aina and her waters. Respect them or don’t come. It’s simple.

Of course after that, I complained to the boat company because should be set rules and if not, the people simply should get out of the water if they dont know how to behave. @kamallagratte6770
@kamallagratte6770 5 ай бұрын
@@JESUS.saves.Repent. I learned the proper way to surf for the first time decades ago at a surf camp in Portugal. However, I noticed that local surfers often enforce their own unwritten rules. Once, in Waikiki, I voiced a complaint to a local surfer, but he looked at me as if I were clueless and he told me not to come here if I don't like the etiquettes of people. Conversely, in Panama, after making a mini mistake, I apologized, yet still received an unjustified outburst from a local. Anyways, the etiquettes are more about common sense than strict rules. Among them: Respect the lineup: Avoid dropping in on other surfers or snaking their waves. Wait your turn and take your fair share of waves. Give right of way: The surfer closest to the breaking part of the wave has priority. If you're paddling out, yield to those riding the wave. Be courteous: A friendly attitude and a smile can greatly contribute to a positive atmosphere in the lineup (In Waikiki, it's like boxing day every day...but still, I like it because I always will be an intermediate surfer) 😀

Two days ago I mention the loud hoops and hollers of two young adults. How it chased away many of the best animals. They told me it was a free ocean and they proceeded to make louder noise being more obnoxious. Guaranteeing No spinner dolphins would come around that day. I’m glad I live in Hawaii so I can go out everyday and they only ruined their only day on that reef, they will never know what they missed.

I was in the Hanauma in 1992 I actually lived on Oahu from 1989 to 1998. There were a lot of fish but many had extensive color loss and they were malnourished and diseased because green peas will not support health fish populations. Much of the damage to the reef was done during that time. I was one who contributed to this problem by taking my children to feed the fish. I do all I can now to educate on proper reef management to make amends for that behavior.

The rock in the bay is dark lava rock. Everything you see here is white coral base. There is no “rock” in the video. It is dead coral and if not walked on new coral could use this as a base to start growing this reef back to a normal reef.

Regardless of ethnicity I hope that all people visiting Hawaii spend at least as much time researching proper ocean habits for marine animal safety as they do looking for a hotel

Well everything in Hanauma Bay is base coral, it’s not rock. But even where the is rock like on the North Shore coral is trying to grow there

I say 'haole' more as a mindset. Ignorance that do not care about the environment and just care more about land desecration just for social media. In this sense, I would not have thought you were haole with being aware and conscious of our land and culture. I appreciate you shedding light on how important the environment means to us. Sorry for my frustration
