The soldiers are largely ceremonial and traditional. They are actual soldiers but this guard duty is ceremonial. That doesn’t stop idiots from messing with them, touching them, or thinking that they’re free to do whatever they want just bc they’re tourists. So the cops are there to keep idiots in line and away from the soldiers who are doing their job. That seems sensible to me, what’s your idea of pathetic?
