Stay at the touristy areas and always look for a guided tour or at least travel with a local who knows what’s up there. I know I wouldn’t dare.

Initially they definitely confused them for possible cartel members but quickly realize they're tourists. Being from Mexico, don't let videos like these scare you, not every corner is a bad place. Cartel members don't just go out and pick fights with innocent people, there's usually context involved. Obviously as a tourist, stick to tourist hot spots, don't go to other places you know nothing about that aren't otherwise related to tourism. Stay away from places that have high cartel activity, you can learn some of this information online. These guys simply were at the wrong place, wrong time but ran into the right people. Cheers 🍻

As a Mexican, I’d say avoid driving into hidden places like these because often times, a lot of illegal activity goes on here as these hidden ranchos are where cartel members reside. There are people defending their territory like these men either from rivals or from intruders. Either way, there’s always people on the look out for who is passing through and why. If you must drive by these places, always be friendly with them and do a head nod or salute them. In Mexico, whenever you’re driving in ranchos, you always acknowledge the people and drivers around you so they know you are not a threat.

This seems more to me like they thought YOU were someone bad. Unfortunately in Mexico civilians are often left having to protect themselves, by creating vigilante groups. They might’ve assumed you guys were the threat, actually. Not saying they ARENT cartel, it’s possible. But they realized you guys weren’t who they may have expected. Still, I can’t imagine how fear inducing this must’ve been. The instant fear for your own life plus someone you love..
@makisjnx0072 жыл бұрын
We reg civilians don’t do any vigilante groups of any kinds, those “vigilantes” groups you hear on the news are just more cartel sponsored thugs. Normal real civilians don’t want anything to do around armed groups because having guns is highly penalized in our country and no the majority of the people do not support legalizing guns, because everyone knows you don’t fight fire with fire. Stop watching movies and Fox News.

I'm from México, there is a very complex situation between criminal, cartel and self-defense armed groups up in here, usually they are on countryside of the big cities, rarely they get near urban districts, or at least not in all the territory. Some states have a pretty bad situation with violence and cartel activity, but again is not everywhere, is like, you're not going to find armed people everywhere. And in theory not all armed people here in Mexico is "dangerous", there is some people that are just trying to defend what is theirs. It seems that our gringo friends just encountered a self defense group then. Sorry for the long comment and some misspelling haha

Outskirts of Cancun? Most likely cartel. Self-defense groups are not common here and if they were petty thugs they would have killed you and taken your car.
