Those guys are so awesome. Re-assuring them that everything will be ok, patting them on the shoulder, warning them to stay away from the dangerous roads. Mexico needs a lot more people like that. Those people need to outnumber the cartels.

As a Mexican myself who unfortunately had a very bad experience at gun point I can tell you one thing: I know it’s inviting to explore, to rent a car and go to different beaches or little towns, I know tours are expensive, I know taxi’s are incredibly expensive too.. but it’s really dangerous to be out there specially if you are a foreigner, don’t know where you are and don’t speak Spanish. Stay at the touristy areas and always look for a guided tour or at least travel with a local who knows what’s up there. I know I wouldn’t dare.

Mony, I agree with you. It is foolish to go exploring in a place with armed rival factions where law enforcement is nonexistent. These young men are very fortunate that the good guys found them first. I hope their luck doesn't run out. They could have easily been taken and held for ransom.

What may bring about your death absolutely can be horrifying in and of itself when it is not a natural occorence and you are about to be murdered. Death, no matter how it occurs, is not the end for us, it just means everything about us just changes. Engergy never dies, it just changes form. Hence the ancient knowledge "There is nothing new under the sun" Ecclesiastes 1: NIV. Well, some people of these auto-defense groups are ex-policemen, ex-military forces, and plain civilians. Where they do get their weapons? Idk, probably the black market. Drug dealing, extortion, rackeetering and other activities are illegal as well, but there are people who do it anyway. Auto-defense is also illegal, as you can't take justice by your own hand. But these groups are so done with having the justice system turning their back on them over and over again. And have lost so much things, that they end up taking this way. Also, they are not bad guys, they were just warning the tourists of not going further because thats where the cartels are.

These are actually the "good guys". Or a more American term, Vigilantes. Armed civilians that take justice into their own hands to defend themselves from organized crime. Initially they definitely confused them for possible cartel members but quickly realize they're tourists. Being from Mexico, don't let videos like these scare you, not every corner is a bad place. Cartel members don't just go out and pick fights with innocent people, there's usually context involved. Obviously as a tourist, stick to tourist hot spots, don't go to other places you know nothing about that aren't otherwise related to tourism. Stay away from places that have high cartel activity, you can learn some of this information online. These guys simply were at the wrong place, wrong time but ran into the right people. Cheers 🍻

As a Mexican, I’d say avoid driving into hidden places like these because often times, a lot of illegal activity goes on here as these hidden ranchos are where cartel members reside. There are people defending their territory like these men either from rivals or from intruders. Either way, there’s always people on the look out for who is passing through and why. If you must drive by these places, always be friendly with them and do a head nod or salute them. In Mexico, whenever you’re driving in ranchos, you always acknowledge the people and drivers around you so they know you are not a threat.

They literally rule cities and go after the police and government, like the Mafia in Italy in 60s - 90s. There is a call leaked where the Boss of Jalisco scorn police officers because they are patrolling the wrong areas, and they answer " ok boss ". USA gangs are a bunch of kids killing theirselves, and they are constantly bullied by police and FBI. Yes they are dangerous as of recent years standards, but FAR SAFER than the average South American areas. Even Italy and Balcans of the years of lead were far more dangerous than today USA hoods statistically.

maaan if you are an American just go somewhere else for vacation, we took Mexico off our potential family Caribbean vacation even though we're Latino because of shit like this, being Latino we don't wanna go to a place that's "yeah from here to there it's all good but go one block this way and you get robbed" because that's life in every unsafe big city, the real good tourist locations are places that don't have this type of insecurity, and there are a lot of Caribbean climate, culturally rich destinations that are way safer

We reg civilians don’t do any vigilante groups of any kinds, those “vigilantes” groups you hear on the news are just more cartel sponsored thugs. Normal real civilians don’t want anything to do around armed groups because having guns is highly penalized in our country and no the majority of the people do not support legalizing guns, because everyone knows you don’t fight fire with fire. Stop watching movies and Fox News.

Wtf no. Mexico isnt Honduras. That group was a cartel, or a police with civil clothes. They was protecting that place for some reason.

This was not a cartel. These people are armed civillions that were warning them to not go on dangerous roads like that

What would happen if this was real active cartel and you made a genuine mistake would they be able to tell a tourist mistake from actual cartel guys or would they probably kill you just to be safe this is a serious question to the Mexicans who actually know how these things work ?

I'm from México, there is a very complex situation between criminal, cartel and self-defense armed groups up in here, usually they are on countryside of the big cities, rarely they get near urban districts, or at least not in all the territory. Some states have a pretty bad situation with violence and cartel activity, but again is not everywhere, is like, you're not going to find armed people everywhere. And in theory not all armed people here in Mexico is "dangerous", there is some people that are just trying to defend what is theirs. It seems that our gringo friends just encountered a self defense group then. Sorry for the long comment and some misspelling haha

For real, there are so many beautiful, secure and highly turistic places in México. But i would say that it is the wrong country to roam around in barely populated places

Outskirts of Cancun? Most likely cartel. Self-defense groups are not common here and if they were petty thugs they would have killed you and taken your car. The cartels don’t want heat from police by killing two white tourists, they probably just saw you driving and thought you were possible criminals or rival cartel groups.
