I was in major need of some Christian metal in the 90s and discovered Tourniquet and Deliverance. I love seeing your reaction to this amazing band and song. In 2003 I drove from Vancouver Canada to southern Washington state to see them live. It was a really cool show and my buddy (not a huge metalhead; came for the drive) caught one of Ted’s drumsticks and then grabbed the setlist off the floor after the show and gave them to me. All of the band stayed a long time to talk to the fans after the show. My buddy was most interested in talking to the bass player because he was wearing an Oilers hockey sweater. Great memories.

Tourniquet has long been my favourite band. It started when I listened Vanishing Lessons, still one of my favourites mostly due to theire catchy melodies and riffs. The amazing thing about Tourniquet is that they have released quite a lot of albums with different styles, although you always can recognize their touch and feel. I personally don't think any of their albums is bad, although the last ten years it became more of a solo project, and their live shows were sub par in that period. I have seen them four times (all in The Netherlands).

They are Christian metal. Ted the drummer is also a renowned classical pianist. He used to sell medical equipment hence the medical terminology in a lot of the songs. Ted is currently the only original member in the band. The guitarist, bass player, and lead singer on this album are currently in a band called Flood. Stop the bleeding, Psyco surgery and this album are their best. They got signed to Metal blade record for awhile.

Ted also, briefly, played in trouble. If your not familiar, psalm 9 is a great record to start with. Growing up as a drummer, Ted was always compared to Neil peart. And in a lot of circles considered to be the better drummer. What ever side of the drum throne you chose, Ted, and the whole band , produced some discordance axis quality music while staying true to their convictions! Rip Ted

Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance is my favorite album from Tourniquet, and was what made me a huge fan in high school. This was when they were a 5-piece: Guy Ritter on vocals, Gary Lenaire on guitar (and yelled vocals in some songs, including this one), Erik Mendez on vocals, Victor Macias on bass, and of course the incomparable Ted Kirkpatrick (RIP) on drums. Gary handled most of the vocals on this track, with Guy coming in during the slower, more groovy part later. This is still a top 5 or top 10 album for me of all time. The production is immense, giving it both a heaviness and crunch, but also clarity, with a certain kind of weight to it. It strikes a great balance, much like how Carcass's Heartwork album does. The later material with Luke is also good, though I find it less consistent than the early stuff. Either way, a landmark album from a band that should have been bigger, but their technical approach and lyrical themes both probably prevented them from reaching higher. I did get to see them live in the 3-piece configuration in '97 with a bass player filling in. It was a solid show, and they did a good performance. I was sad to hear of Ted's passing a couple years back, as I felt like Gazing At Medusa was a bit of a weaker album and I had hoped he could come back with a stronger follow-up. It was not to be, it seems.

@MichaelBuchanan-692 жыл бұрын
OK let's talk about Tourniquet. The band was originally formed by Gary Lenaire and Guy Ritter. If you listen to Stop The Bleeding and Psycho Surgery, Gary does the "harsh" vocals and Guy does the high vocals much like King Diamond. Ted Kirkpatrick joined after the band was initially formed. They added Mark Lewis on guitars and Erik James on bass. The second album added Erik Mendez on guitar and Victor Macias on bass Guy left after this album due to not liking the direction the band was moving musically. This is when Luke Easter joined the band. Gary left the band after the after the Vanishing Lessons album. After his leaving Ted pretty much took over. For me the band went down hill fast after Gary and Guy left the band and Ted took control of the name and band. As to your question, yes Tourniquet is still going, mostly it's now just Ted and whatever studio musicians he can get to record. Luke left the band in 2015 and Les Carlson of Bloodgood sings for them for the live shows. Tourniquet is set to release a new album in 2022 possibly 2023. If you want to hear what Tourniquet could have been go check out a band called Flood. Gary Lenaire Guy Ritter and Erik Mendez along with two others just put put an album called Polarized. Yes they are a Christian band. Mostly now a days Ted pushes his Vegan life style and animal rights in the music.
@4themusicman2 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better. The first 4 albums are what I mostly grab. And I'm probably in the minority but VL is my favorite Tourniquet album. But I dig the 3 that came before it quite well. Microscopic isn't bad. It has its moments. Moth is decent I suppose. I really like Marty Friedman's guest guitar work. But yeah, excellent synopsis of the band, Michael.
@fluxkapacitor84602 жыл бұрын
Yep.... first 3 albums are quintessential Tourniquet. Even VL was too much of a departure, and dare I say a dumbing down of their signature sound. Luke Easter has nothing on Guy Ritter, who was by far the most dynamic voice on those early albums. Many layers and emotional grit to his voice. After Gary left, the riffs became somewhat predictable, although Trivializing on the acoustic album was definitely back in the ballpark... sans Guy of course. FLOOD does sound great... but one has to admit, that when it comes to the drums... Ted was dynamite with the original dudes.

*Thanks for the lesson in Tourniquet! ... I am fairly knowledgeable as far as when it comes to standard heavy metal music. However, I never played much Christian thrash back in the day As I was into the bands like, Metallica, Def Leppard, Dio Judas Priest, Ozzy, Metal Church, Kiss, Iron Maiden However I discovered Deliverance some time ago and even dabbled in WhiteCross a bit, however when I heard Tourniquets Ark of Suffering, I was hooked. Now I know that was one of Teds animal activist concepts which I applaud him for, and he gives the skins one ''hell of a beatdown'' no pun intended, yet I really was taken by Gary Lenaire's ''low growls'' if you will. And obviously loved Guy Ritters high octave range and vocal style, So now I like the best of both worlds Standard Rock and Thrash like some of the bands I forementioned and plus also the likes of Slayer, Testament, Overkill, Fates Warning etcetera. But now I feel as if my newly broadened horizons have been expanded in part due to Torniquets music and so I want to thank you @buemb for the informative comment you left, for people like me who want to learn more about this and other Christian thrash bands and music. I am now wanting to check out the band flood you mention and so glad to know that a couple TALENTED Christian THRASH VETERIANS such as Gary Lenaire and Guy Ritter are still making music, I NOW want to check out polarized hope it kicks A** !!!! Yes, the drummer is a classical pianist player as well. That been said, they are okay to listen to, but I have never liked them enough to purchase any of their albums. I have listened to this band since day 1 (Stop The Bleeding) Honestly I have a hard time picking a favorite song or album, though I lean more towards the albums where Guy Ritter did the singing or some of the singing. Which are the first 3 , Vanishing Lessens is when Luke easter took over vocal duty. Sadly Ted Kirkpatrick passed away and the rest of the remaining members stated they are not going to continue with Tourniquet which to me makes since as Ted (I believe) was the only original member left. Man you need to check out at Min the first 3 albums and specifically songs Ready Or Not, "The Test for Leprosy" from Stop The Bleeding, from Psycho Surgery I suggest "Broken Chromosomes", Spineless, "Dysfunctional Domicile" and finally from Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance Try "Phantom Limb", "Theodicy on Trial" and of course the insane sounding "The Skeezix Dilemma"
