Doc tests the new tow behind lawn spreader and gives his thoughts on who should get one. For most, a good push lawn spreader is the way to go. But for those with huge lawns a tow behind lawn spreader might be a good option.

Great video Doc I have the same toe behind spreader that you have I take care of an acre and a half of land in between mine and my dad's property side by side you just have to regulate your speeds for your distance I've been using mine this will be my third season and I love it

Have had the same tow behind for 2 years now to go over 2 acres, I’m 66 now. Have a toro 1500 HD Zero turn to pull it. Covers lots of ground easily. Only issue is the fertilizer must be “dry” so it feeds out the thrower smoothly.

Nice video. Question, on the earthway or the pull behind spreader, is there some way to decode their settings to the setting recommendations on the bags for the products being used?

Any advice? Very early in my “lawn hobby” and I put down a pretty heavy nitrogen fertilizer too early in the season, probably before any growth was really occurring (late feb in Texas). Anything I can do to help fix this situation and still have a decent lawn this year? Maybe applying a 5-20-20 to increase the potassium and phosphorous? Thanks for the advice

Slower speed would help with the way it slings it but yeah i prefer to see the throw pattern when tossing down fert.

What spreader would you recommend for a smaller lawn? I barely have enough room for a broadcast spreader to be honest.

Doc you are 100% right that tow-behind spreaders should not be and I repeat should not be used around the house when spreading fertilizer. Tow-behind spreaders are meant for wide open spaces where precise application is not critical. Where precision is needed like in tight nonlinear spaces around the house there is nothing better than the push spreader. With a push spreader you can see what your doing and how the spreader is working which is especially critical when applying fertilizer. Again, tow-behind spreaders are great for large wide open spaces but you cannot beat a push spreader for more precision work.

I use a hand spreader for around 22k ftsq ( 1/2 acres ish) and it gets the job done. These spreaders are long term goals, but too many other projects.

Only 58,I'm pushing 69 and have 4 properties largest being 1/2 acre got an Agri-fab push,love it, looking for a good tow behind. Don't waist your money on any Scotts spreader,JUNK, and they won't supply any parts. have had too many Scotts not ever going back, spend the money and get one that will last and will carry product and not breakdown.I spread a lot of lime and that stuff is heavy, Scotts won't handle it.

Don’t put them in the spreader at the same time, but yes, you can throw them down on the same day... you’ll just have to walk it twice

Speed = distance. If you drive slower it won't cast it as far away. You can also limit its distance by putting down flaps on the edges of the hopper to direct product down sooner. Think about the mechanics of it. How's it work on steep hills when you have to make turns?
