what soil temperature is best to start applying organic fertilizers like milorganite? thank you.
@LawnInsider10 ай бұрын
You are right that raised soil temps will do a more efficient job of raising microbial activity in the soil. I'll just say that typically, I don't look at putting organic fertilizers down until at least April 1.

My grass is a mix of st. augustine and bermuda in texas with one side of the yard being more full sun exposed than the other. I have seen people put out what looks like a soil looked fertilizer on their lawns to treat their patch areas. I have some lawn food to place out but can you give me some insight on how to fix dead grass areas. Maybe can I do both?
@douglascain64048 ай бұрын
Growing a green healthy lawn is an art, not a science because every lawn is different. There are way too many variables involved. Where do you live? What grass type do you have? What is your soil's ph level? How nutrient rich is your soil? How much sunlight and rain does your lawn get? How compact is your soil? What percentage of your lawn are weeds? What weeds are growing in your neighbor's yard? How much road salt is splashed on your lawn? Do dogs constantly relieve themselves on your grass? Are grubs feasting on your roots? What is falling out of the trees; pine needles, pine cones, helicopter seeds, acorns, twigs, leaves or fruit? Do you enjoy raking? How often do you mow and do you discharge the clippings out the side, mulch or bag? How sharp is your lawn mower blade? What does your budget look like? How much time and money are you willing to spend on lawn products and working on the lawn? How do you handle the bugs and fungus. Getting your lawn to look really good requires a huge commitment.

I was hoping this video could help me. How can my soil test quantitatively drive what type of fertilizers to use and what the ideal ratios are? eg if my soil has really low/somewhat low/high nitrogen and what numbers to assign to those?
@LawnInsider8 ай бұрын
Nitrogen is used very quickly in the lawn. Virtually all soil tests will show low N. Unless the samples were pulled shortly after a fertilizer application. As far the other macros and micros, you're just going to base your ratio on what you're seeing with your results. If you're high in P or K, you won't need a formulation that's high in those. If you're high in Fe, don't apply iron, etc. Then take another soil test in a year or so, and see what changes have taken place.

Great info Rhett. What fert do you reccommend when sand leveling? granular or liquid? High nitrogen content? apply before or after sand? Thanks
@LawnInsider Жыл бұрын
I think the most beneficial strategy there would be apply at half rate maybe 2 weeks before leveling, then apply at half rate after leveling. I’m typically going to stick with granular fertilizers as my primary feeder. Supplement with liquids though.

I use N-EXT products which are fully organic liquids but the great thing is that their products are absorbed from the grass blade along with the root once it gets watered into the ground...Within 2 days of first application I have a dark green lush lawn in mid March here in Upstate N.Y. with temperatures that are averaging around 50s in the daytime and high 30s to mid 40 degrees at night time. My Spring N-EXT application had Iron in it and has been holding its color since then... I stopped using granular applications about 4 years ago unless I'm adjusting PH because I need more pounds to the ground that liquid application can handle... I also use liquid Humic Acid, minor nutrients, root growth stimulator, sea kelp, and potasium so my clay soil stays in spec on my soil tests. Funny thing is I only use about 1.5 pounds of Nitrogen a year and grass stays healthy all season long...Great video...

Because some of them can burn certain types of grasses. If you know it won't burn your type of grass for sure then you can use it and have no problems and better results. Most people will assume that they can use any of them on their type of grass and burn it and blame the product.

Cool season lawns can use the same fertilizers, but the timing of when you want to push your lawn is different. It's all based on climate. What fertilizer you want to use is really based on the soil type in your specific area.

What is the reason for staying clear of weed and feed products?
@LawnInsider Жыл бұрын
I prefer liquid weed killers. Plus weed and feed products typically have to be applied to an already wet lawn, which makes for a messy application. I just err on the side of using separate products for my feeding and weed killing.

I would probably hold off on another fertilizer app until mid-May or so, but it does depend how heavy (or light) you went. I shoot most of my videos on a GoPro Hero10. Occasionally I’ll use my iPhone for a few clips. I use Rode Wireless Mics. I use the Adobe Suite programs to edit. Primarily Premiere Pro and Photoshop, but occasionally After Effects as well.

Why are you against Weed and Feed?
@gw163 Жыл бұрын
I'm wondering this too. I got a weed and feed product because the pounds of nitrogen in the bag was exactly what I needed for the entire year.... Any extra killing of weeds is just a bonus.
@LawnInsider Жыл бұрын
A few things. First and foremost, I like keeping my weed treatments and fertilizer apps separate. I also prefer using liquid herbicides over granular, mainly due to the messy nature of application with the granular weed killers. Usually you have to apply to an already wet lawn, which makes for a messy treatment. I also like to avoid making blanket herbicide treatments on the entire lawn if possible. The last thing that really sticks out to me about most Weed & Feed products is that they’ll have a max annual rate, so even if you wanted to use it for the fertilizer portion, you could only apply it up to a certain point.

What would happen if I were to stop fertilizing my lawn at all? Just mulching clippings? Trees never get fertilized and they are always nice and green.
@petedetraglia4776 Жыл бұрын
Tree roots are massive and way deeper than grass roots...They stay cool and get fertility from deep within the ground. Also trees do a lot more photo synthesis as they are taller and have way more foliage to absorb sunlight...Mulching is always good as it puts nutrients back into the ground but if you soil is missing key elements you need for a healthy lawn the only way to have healthier grass is to supply the nutrients it needs...

Why does the cost per nitrogen matter?
@LawnInsider Жыл бұрын
Because when you’re paying for a fertilizer, you’re really paying for those macros (mostly). NPK. Nitrogen is the primary driver in plant growth. So you wouldn’t want to spend way more for N than you have to.
