@TowardGarden9 ай бұрын
It is hard to tell without seeing. If the weather is cold, that is completely normal. Seedlings grow slowly when it is cold. If the seedlings look healthy, get adequate light and don't show signs of wilting, then you just need to keep them warm at above 65F (18C). Also once you see first pair of true leaves (not the tiny ones), feed them with diluted (1/2 of suggested dose) fish fertilizer, or a general purpose water soluble fertilizer. Please note that the timeline in the video is just for reference and can differ for different conditions. I am guessing you just need to be patient. Happy growing and thank you for visiting!

would it be better to root the seeds in the seed tray than in the container bin?
@TowardGarden3 жыл бұрын
Not a big difference between a tray and container bin. But if you mean individual plugs, that's because Basils have tiny seeds and it is easier to sprinkle seeds rather than sowing couple of seeds in each plug. I do this so I can choose strong seedlings to be pricked out. This also gives me the opportunity to make the soil rich for seedlings to grow better. You can certainly sow seeds in many different methods. I hope this helps. Thanks for getting in touch and Good Luck!

Also, is there a sub for potting soil? I have an array of organic seeds I can get at my library.
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
So glad to hear it! I am sure you can do this! For watering, the best is to keep moist, but not soggy. You can skip watering is the top soil is wet. In hot wethers, water daily. Perlite can be replaced by vermiculite. You can also use gardening grit but that will make pots heavier. All garden centers carry bagged manure. Chicken or cow manures sold in bags are composted and ready to use. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!

Hi, new gardener here. I’m being told to harden off my basil. I noticed you didn’t do that and they are thriving. I live in SoCal so the sun is harsher than it appears in this video. Did you harden off? If not, how come? Thanks in advance!
@TowardGarden7 ай бұрын
Hi. I am in SoCal too and usually with our mild winters you can skip hardening off your plants. You can start indoors, but as soon as seedlings emerge, bring them outdoor for a 4-6 hours of early morning sunlight. If too hot in midday sun, keep them in part shade. If night temperature drop below 40F, which rarely happens in SoCal, bring them inside at nights. Otherwise by keeping them outdoor, they will get used to outdoor conditions and grow well. Basil grow perfectly in cool weathers, don't wait until hot summers to grow them. Hope this helps and thank you so much for getting in touch. Happy growing!

Great video and very informative. I have a few questions, when I first plant the seeds how often should i water them ( I will be using a plastic pot) , should i expose them to direct sunlight? If yes how many hours a day? Also, I've seen some videos where they cover the seedling with a plastic wrap, is it necessary? And what does it do ? (Sorry if i used wrong terminology but i'm still a beginner ) One last question, when the basil thrive and grow, how frequently should i water them? Thank you❤
@TowardGarden7 ай бұрын
Glad you found the video helpful. For watering the seedlings you may want to check my video on how to water seedlings here kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3rImnVpZt54gNksi=PdpKU4yj7lUhADjC . Basically you want to keep seed soil moist but not soggy. For the light, 4-6 hours of early morning sunlight is the best. or you can place them in a part sun/part shade location, but avoid exposing them to hot midday sun. The plastic cover is to help keep soil moist. If you manage to check yourself and keep soil constantly moist, plastic cover is not needed (I never use it). And the mature basils will do best if you keep them watered. Do not let top soil to dry out. I normally water them every other day and if hot, daily. Hope this answers your question and thank you so much for your comment. Happy growing!😊🌱

For granules, you can use Feather meal or Blood meal fertilizers (I have a list of these fertilizers on my amazon page www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6 you can check). Any type of manure is also perfect to amend soil for high nitrogen media. Thank you very much for visiting and your support!

Thank very much you for your comment. 1. I started in March. 2. Sure. You can start seeds from February to May in zone 10. Keep them well-watered and provide some shade from sun in very hot days. So glad you love the video. If you are asking about the fabric pots or the grow bags, they are made of heavy duty thickened non woven fabrics. I purchase them online . You can check my amazon page www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6 for a list of bags I use. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

Hi there, such amazing informational video. I have a question do we need to soak the basil seeds before sowing or just directly plant them?
@TowardGarden10 ай бұрын
Hi! So glad you found the video informative. Soaking seeds is usually for seeds with hard shells to reduce germination time. Basil seeds are not that hard to germinate and soaking is not necessary. I always sow the directly but if you want yo can soak them too. Hope this helps. Happy gardening and thank you so much for your comment!😊

Should I set it in full sun, partial sun or indirect sun?
@TowardGarden5 ай бұрын
If the weather is not too hot, full sun will work, usually about 6-8 hours of sun. If too hot, like me in SoCal, indirect sun is better (such as protecting them from midday hot sun with a shade cloth). Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
Basil can last the entire summer, and if you have moderate winter time, you can keep harvesting basil for next year too. Just remember to keep them watered. Thank you very much for your comment!

I can’t figure out why some places say plant 4-6” apart and other say 8-10”. 4-6” seems to look nice for a good bushy amount of basil without a lot of gaps.
@TowardGarden2 ай бұрын
It depends on the variety and the size of the plants you want to harvest. Yes, for most basils, 4-6" works great. Thank you for getting in touch!

Nice video. I've sown basil from harvested seeds before on a wet paper, and then planted them in soil. I'll do it in a mix as you suggested this time around. Could you inform what the advantage is to transplant the seedlings into a plug, and to then move the plug to the final pot, rather than moving the seedlings straight to the pot? Thanks!
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
The seedlings aren't that strong to be potted straight into a rich potting mix. I also found that tiny seedlings are more prone to disease specially damping off, if they haven't developed strong root system. I am sharing the best practice I have experienced, but there can be definitely other methods that work too. Hope this answers your question and thank you so much for your comment!

The black ones are from IKEA. I think they are discontinued, but you can find a similar one here www.ikea.com/us/en/p/uppsnofsad-storage-box-with-lid-black-s99393107/ . The green one is just a 24" planter window box you can find in garden centers www.homedepot.com/p/Bloem-Dura-Cotta-24-in-Living-Green-Plastic-Window-Box-Planter-with-Tray-DCBT24-42/205054779 . Yes, you need drainage holes on any seed tray. I am reusing Swiffer Sweeper wet mop cloths container. Washed thoroughly and added holes for drainage (about 10 1/4" holes). I will try to post a video on this subject in future. Thanks for visiting!

@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
I suggest to wait and see how many of them germinate. If they germinate too close to each other and you will not need that many plants, just remove few so other have room to grow. And if you want to keep them, try to prick them out while they are young. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

@TowardGarden9 ай бұрын
You can definitely start seeds indoors. If the night temperature stays above 40-45°F, you can take them outside for a morning sunlight. IF decided to keep indoor, make sure to provide good light source. And when nights are too cold, bring seedling inside at nights. Once seedlings are large enough to handle and weather is above 50°F both day and night, transplant outdoors. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

I use home made or get it from local suppliers. If you want to use bagged compost (and if you live in US) you can use Kellogg garden "Amend" kellogggarden.com/products/kellogg/amend-garden-soil-for-flowers-and-vegetables/ or organic "Garden Soil" kellogggarden.com/products/kellogg/kellogg-garden-organics-all-natural-garden-soil/ . So glad you loved the video. If you are planting seedlings individually like I did in the video, you can have them 4-5 inches apart and they will do great. However, if you are planting 3-4 seedlings together, or you want to grow bushy varieties of basil, you may want to plant them more apart each other. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

Hello, I started growing my basil seeds indoors in some direct but mostly indirect sunlight, because it was still cold and windy outside (NM). But now I am seeing all my seedlings are leggy. So now i am putting them out in the sun. How many hours do I put? Is there anything else I can do? I hope I have not ruined them 😔.
@mokshakhajuria3993 Жыл бұрын
They are Ferry Morse, same as you showed in your video
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
You can put them in morning sunlight ~6hrs, and if it is too cold (below 50F), bring them inside at nights. Once it is time to prick them out or potting on, you can plant them a bit deeper and cover part of the leggy stem. After that, wait few weeks until they have developed leaves and then cut the tip off so they grow bushy. While you are waiting, I suggest to start a new batch and this time as soon as they pop up put them in filtered sunlight or 4-6 hrs of early morning sunlight. hope this helps and good luck!

@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
They are prone to many common leaf eating bugs such as aphids, slugs, or beetles. But most problematic are the fungal and bacterial diseases like wilts, blight, mildew, bacterial spots,...Regular monitoring and preventative actions work much better to control these issues. Spraying neem oil mix is one of the best organic methods to use. hope this answers your question and thank you so much for your comment.

I'm wondering if I could germinate basil seeds in a container with potting soil and lightly cover the top surface with a thin layer of seeding-starting mix, could I avoid having to prick-out the seedlings to pot them up? I'd like to try growing basil indoors and this way I'd avoid all those other steps?
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
Sure you can. I am showing what I found works best for growing them in my experience but sure there can be many ways to gardening. Some seeds struggle to germinate in potting soil due to fungal or mold problems. Also you may want to separate the seedlings if you plant them to close to each other. Hope this helps and happy growing.
@priayief2 жыл бұрын
@@TowardGarden Thanks for the reply. I guess the best way is to do it in the simplest manner possible and then, if you notice issues (like fungal or mold problems), take steps do address the issue. The first time I grew Basil indoors, I planted a single seed in each pot. After watching your video, my reaction was that this wasn't a good idea. I'm about to start growing it again this year, but this time, I'm just gonna try throwing a bunch of seeds on the surface of a container of potting soil and then thin them out appropriately. And thanks for posting you video. Cheers.

@TowardGarden11 күн бұрын
Not sure what happened there, but unless you cut it back to the soil level, it shouldn't kill the plant. try to harvest to the top 2-3 leaves. Keep 4-5" of the stem for new growth. Hope this helps and thanks for visiting.

*The flower shop owner told me to soak the seeds for a few hours first, but none of them sprouted. So the seeds don't need to be soaked at all, right?*
@TowardGarden6 ай бұрын
Some seeds with hard shells may benefit from being soaked in advance to speed up the germination, but I have never done that for basil seeds. If conditions are right (temp., moisture,...) you shouldn't have issues germinating basil seeds. You may just got bad batch of seeds, try new packet. Thanks for visiting!
