Musically Tower of Power were very demanding. I didn't want to know how many hours these musicians spent on a song in the studio until everything was just right. Great band, always a pleasure to listen to Tower of Power. Greetings from Heidelberg / Germany

I have loved this song ever since it came out, while I was living in the Bay Area. They were our band !!! As a very compassionate young man, he was singing my OWN exact life experience. Like you, I KNEW what love was from a very young age, and it cuts deep. I have to admit, I tear up often when I hear this song, especially if I haven't heard it in a while ... those old feelings come back, just like he states them. Seriously, this HAS happened to me, and I've wondered, did she ever, "wake up wondering just how well I've done"? My response, would've been exactly as he stated: "Well, I've done alright. Yes, there are some girls, but you know, I'd drop them on sight, just for you ... because I love you" !!! Killer lyrics that many a man has had the unpleasant "privilege" of experiencing, and though I hope not, I'm sure plenty of young ladies have felt this very same way too. I guess it proves we are human, and we do love.

I always enjoy your reactions but this one is special. Tower of Power was from the Bay Area (East Bay) and was huge in the late 60's & early 70's. Rick Stevens was one of the great soul singers of that period until he went to prison and the band never was the same after that. Great memories...thank you once again. "So Very Hard To Go" by this group is also a great song to react to.

bloodstone Recommended because it's another nice arrangement of this nice song. Love them both. Bloodstone is a little lower key and more chicken wings smoke and whiskey.

This is from their 2nd album titled Bump City. Rick Stevens was the lead singer. He was released from the group to serve jail time because he killed a drug dealer. This song introduced TOP to the American public. When he left Lenny Williams took over in 1970. We know Lenny Williams for his signature single Cause I Love You RIP Rick Stevens

You should listen to their live version from a few years ago the lead singer went to prison for a long time (I won’t get into why but you can Google Rick Stevens and find out) but he/they put on a masterful performance and everyone was so happy for him. May he rest in peace 😢
