Israeli scholar Maya Wind’s new book, Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom, documents how Israeli universities directly constrain Palestinian rights by supporting and even developing the policies of occupation and apartheid used by the Israeli state. “In the West, Israeli universities are considered bastions of pluralism and democracy. But in fact … they are a central pillar of Israel’s regime of oppression against Palestinians,” says Wind. She also discusses Israel’s “scholasticide" in Gaza, the "intentional destruction of Palestinian education,” and the movement of conscientious objectors to Israel’s mandatory conscription, in which she took part when she refused to enlist in the army at age 18 and served 40 days in a military prison.

Zahir Muhsein was a Palestinian leader of the pro-Syria As-Sa'iqa Ba'athist faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization between 1971 and 1979. In an interview with Trouw Magazine, 31. I admire this woman not for her insights but for her actions, in particular refusing to join the Israeli army. Jails are not harsh for Jewish people in Israel, nothing like the hell holes in America. While living in nyc, a Jewish person told me the many cool “earthy” last names of euro-Jews - like wind, wolf, fox, lake, stone, fish, etc - derive from pagan-Ukrainian-Jews back in day. They ditched their signifying last names and took “earthy sur names”, which is BEYOND cool and fascinating! Wish there was essay on this…!!

Good on you, Maya, for your exposé of Israeli universities. I can only imagine that this information will improve and strengthen Israel's university system! That's the nature of a robust democratic society and economy. You're free to criticize without worrying about your safety, and in the end improve the system. Try this in Saudi Arabia or Yemen! In fact, I wonder if you would be interested in applying your set of standards to the best Palestinian universities the west bank? --Al-Quds University, or Syria? --Damascus University , or Yemen? --Al-Razi University, or Saudi Arabia? --King AbdulAziz University, etc. etc. Do you think these universities, in contrast to of course Hebrew University, Tel Aviv U and the Weizmann, are bastions of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (a Western notion)?

war and dialogue seem to have fundamentally very different ways, war is about elimination of "the enemy" which so is "the other" and fueled by a mixture of hatred, anger and fear, only one of the two involved parties has to be the dominant force, dialogue is about granting space to one-another on equal level, absence of violence, the willingness to mirror one-another, the willingness to wholeheartedly listen to one-another, compassion-based a completely different dimension than war
