I have a Grand Design imagine 17MKE and towed it with my 2015 Silverado 1500 4x4 double cab 5.3l for 5,000 miles. Truck had 1750 payload and pulled the trailer okay. But start going up hills and it felt that I was working the truck a little too much. Bought a 2019 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 double cab with the 6.0 l. Got over 7,000 miles now and there is a difference. Much more stable and while the power is close to same as my 2015, I know the truck is going to last for much longer. No major issues with my trailer. I’d buy another one and probably will down the road. Great videos!

We have the same trailer and rent ours out. It has come back in one piece, no interior damage like yours. We tow ours with a 2017 Ramm 1500 Ecodiesel and we really dont need the equalizer hitch, but use it for safety reasons. We get around 15mph pulling our trailer out here in Utah with all the mountain passes and hills we go over. We love our Imagine 2400BH. We have a 2017 GD 297 RSTS and we love. I did extensive research on all brands and decided on GD based on many categories. Of course we have had some minor issue which we expected as well as the dreaded bearing issues which were covered under warranty. Personally, I would never rent out our rig, let alone allow anyone including family to borrow it. You just increase the chances of things braking on your rig. Not sure how anyone can vet any renter, especially prior towing experience and set up knowledge. We have put on several thousand miles on ours with not major issues. We did replace our china bombs tires and upgraded the suspension system (MoreRide). We tow our with our 2016 diesel Ford F-250 4X4.

Airlift airbags installed as well to stiffen up the rear. When fully loaded including people, dog, firewood, etc. we’re within our weight limits, and the Equalizer hitch controls things well. This trailer is actually a little lighter than our previous one, and better balanced as well. I won’t argue that a 3/4 ton truck would be ideal. 😀

Hi there. We own a GD 2670 mk and also had a very difficult time with the water hose near the outdoor kitchen. I hopped on the GD FB sites and found the solution. Turn off all water systems and unplug main water. Now release some pressure off of the waterlines inside at the kitchen. Now go back outside to the connection and force the hose into the connection. If it still doesn’t go in, take a screwdriver and tap the the screwdriver into the hole to release the pressure and try to attach the hose again. Good luck!

I wonder why JD put in the title about too heavy? Almost all modern half tons can tow a 6k dry trailer. It's certainly at the heavy end of what most folks recommend for a 'normal' half ton, but as the new owner of a 34' 6k dry trailer pulling with a 5.3 4x4 standard bed WT trim truck with HD tow package it's been completely fine towing it 1,500 miles from Ohio to the Florida Keys. I did spring for the Equalizer hitch, which keeps it under control in the wind.

The Grand Design Imagines are mostly half ton towable. Some are even 1/4 ton towable. That whole is made pretty cheap. Their Reflection travel trailers are mostly 3/4 ton towable. My experience owning one of their Reflection 5/th wheels is that they are 1 ton SRW towable--I honestly believe they might underestimate their dry tongue weights. I towed my 5th wheel with a 3/4 ton for a while, and definitely wished for 1 ton truck...

We have a 2020 grand design imagine 2400BH, and are from Central Minnesota. Overall we did have a few pieces of trim come loose or not installed properly, but they were very minor, one of our shades stopped retracting, And be careful not to put too much pressure on the bottom step of the ladder in back there's no support and it will bend. We had a similar issue with our shower sliding door, the dealers took care of it it, something down low came loose, seemed to be a simple fix, and has worked perfectly ever since. Overall though I've been very happy we've had our unit for a little over a year now, our dealer, and Grand design have been excellent to deal with. We also tow with a 2018 F-150 with a 3-5 EcoBoost long box crew cab, I opted to go with a propride hitch, which I find to help in extreme wind scenarios when we go on several thousand miles trips. Personally as of right now I wouldn't even consider another RV manufacturer, I love our grand design!

Very frustrating with making a decision on the towing rig with RVs like this. A 3/4 ton would be much more comfortable. However, if you are going to get a 3/4 ton, why not get a larger trailer. The 28-30 foot range is kind of a losing situation regardless of the tow rig you get. Either you are underpowered or you have too much excess power (= waste). For me, I would get the 3/4 ton, but go for the 31 grand design trailer.

Grand Design trailers are not poorly put together trailers. There usually either first or second in reality, quality, and design next to the airstream (check the ratings the last few years.) Me and my wife bought a 2020 2250rk and tow it with my 2019 raptor. We've had it just over two years and no major problems, a few things here and there but we all have too remember these trailers are houses on wheels. Everytime you take it out driving down a road something could happen. That's why it's very important to stay on top of maintaining your trailer. You said you've taken already 11000 miles in 7 months? That's a lot driving in a short period of time. Grand Design does multiple of checks during, before and after it reaches its destination too be sold.

You'd likely be just fine, this video screams wear and tear all over it. I was a Property Manager for years, I don't care how much he states that certain problems weren't tenant issues, I promise you that the renters treated those RV's just like people treat rental cars and hotel rooms. In general all RV's have small issues during their first year of ownership, if you go Jayco, that will likely have issues too. The biggest plus of going with a Grand Design is the trust and reputation they have garnered within the RV world for honoring their warranties without making the customer jump through hoops to get service. Jayco has a good reputation as well I believe although I'm not as familiar with their service record. They are certainly large enough not to nickel and dime their customers to death.

Suggest you do some research regarding the various tow ratings. A trucks' published tow capacity is meaningless in the 1/2 ton world. It's calculated based on towing a flat trailer loaded with cinder blocks.....not pulling a 30' sail of a travel trailer. For 1/2 ton's it's all about payload capacity, followed by axle ratings. To determine your actual payload it's always best to CAT scale the truck and subtract it from truck's GVWR. However, as a base, use the yellow/white payload sticker (cargo carrying capacity) listed on the on the driver door pillar. Trailer tongue weight (13% of trailer GVWR) + hitch + all passengers and cargo in the truck cannot exceed sticker payload.

JD We have been hunting for the right RV for us to full time in starting later 2021 when we retire. We have gone from a class A to a C to a 5th to a C and now back to a 5th that we are very happy with the floor plan. We have decided on the Keystone Cougar 316RLS. Our problem is that we have visited 3 dealers to see the unit and to talk about the size truck needed and not our surprised we have gotten 3 different recommendations so we are hoping you can make a recommendation. It will be my wife and I with two Pomeranians, I would like to have a Tool Box for tools and possibly extra fuel capacity. Budget is a concern so we will probably be looking for a used truck. We enjoy your content and we found you thru other channels and see that you are well respected in the community. Oh and just so you know we are not going to be doing business with the three dealers that apparently are only concerned about the sale not the experience for their customers. Any recommendations you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

BTBRV, I have a 2017 Yukon Denali that tows 8000 lbs with payload of 1522 and I have the exact trailer (2020 GD Imagine 2400BH). I run a e4 weight distribution and sway system. I agree that 7500 lbs towing capacity or even my 8000 lbs is not ample. All loads are not equal and the trailer weight damn near as much or more than the truck. What is the most weight you feel you would be comfortable towing with a large SUV and a 8000 lbs tow rating? Curious because I am considering selling and downsizing to about 6000 lbs max trailer weight. Thank you!
@gransport4246
@gransport4246 3 жыл бұрын
Payload is the key starting point. A 7500 lbs max gross trailer weight could easily have 900-1000 lbs of torque weight leaving only 500-600 lbs for people and belongings. You probably want a trailer with no more than 5000-5500 lbs max gross trailer weight rating with your Denali.

WOW thanks for the review. I`ve been looking at the 25-28' toy hauler from these guys. But I kept thinking for the money they want this is pretty poorly put together. And knew there would be issues with them. I never liked the way the workmen looked from the 2 I looked at. I could see light through the corners of the slides there was problems with trim in the BRAND NEW UNITS I looked at. Along with rush, and not just surface rust either. All the dealer would say is oh they will see if they can take care of this. I really liked then but this on 2 brand new units at two different dealers. So I`m still shopping, but also thinking 40k-50k will pay for a lot of hotel rooms.

You are right, it's all about mindset. We knew going into this that the RV would get extra wear and tear and wouldn't be as pristine as if we were the only ones using it. J. D. Was asking in another video about what constitutes people labeling various RVs or RVs as junk. I think in this video Mat gives a pretty good example of where the junk label comes from. I myself would be strongly tempted to place this trailer in the junk, do not purchase category because of its in service issues. This Grand Design overall is a well thought out layout and has a number of nice touches. But it has a fairly high number of defects which generally can annoy the patience and satisfaction level of the ownership experience for the purchaser/owner/user. Things such as the all too common failings of the strip molding, the failure of the shower wall, the cabinetry pulling apart and the sub optimal performance of a number of items like the sliding door to the master suite, (guide failure, roller track failure), the rapid deterioration of the sink cover, the problems with the stove. I know that this trailer is being used as a rental and rental service is generally harder on the units for wear and tear, but the failures of the components illustrated in this video is nothing new. These are very very common problems. Especially with the moldings and cabinetry and shower stall paneling failure. This has been happening for a very, very long time across the market and the industry for some reason has failed to come up with and implement any good solutions. It’s exactly these failures, which continue to happen, even on higher price point RV units which lead to the labeling of RVs like this one as junk. J. D., as a long time user and RV advocate, may have become complacent on these defects, but for someone such as me, I am more interested in these failings verses the upgraded dual axle suspension components or whether it has incandescent vs LED tail lights or the fancy external radio speakers, outside kitchens and and the like. I am more interested in the trailer not constantly coming apart or leaking or breaking in some way. I noticed this trailer was being compared to the Mallard he also owns and was renting out. I suspect the overall ownership satisfaction level with the Mallard is a lot higher than this trailer, and may have a significant role in the future for the next trailer purchase.

Can't argue that rentals accelerate the wear and tear. That being said, most of these issues happened right away and before the rental season became busy. This person is using his trailer for income generation/commercial purposes and complaining about how a unit built for personal use is holding up under commercial use situations. The items he mentions are all minor/common issues you see in all units across the industry. Very few units have no problems during the first year of operation, in fact most do have minor issues with moulding etc. once they begin their journey traveling down the road. Ironically the biggest reason to go with a Grand Design unit is their warranty and willingness to stand behind their products and willingness to honor their customers warranty without making the process difficult for their customers. The reality is this person is using their RV in a manner that would and in my opinion SHOULD void his warranty, commercial use will lead to more frequent and more substantial wear and tear and is more likely to increase problems with abuse/misuse/lack of care when compared to a unit that is only utilized by the purchaser for personal use. Someone who utilizes their RV for commercial purposes will likely make more warranty claims and if done by more people this has a chance of deterring a manufacturer from offering more robust warranties for their products. If this type of use becomes more and more common it will eventually impact those of us who do not abuse the warranty because costs will skyrocket for the manufacturer. It will either result in lower term warranty coverage or higher sale costs to recoup the expense of covering these higher traffic units. I hope that manufacturers will offer or do offer commercial warranties for people who wish to use their RV's in this manner rather than pass along the costs to all of us as a means of offsetting the increased cost of honoring their warranties. That will still likely not work as most buyers will not be honest about the intended use for their RV's because commercial warranty options will be more expensive for all the reasons I stated above. I am all for freedom to use my property in the way I wish to use it but I also would not expect a manufacturer to cover my damages/losses if I use their product in a method that it was not intended for. I do not know how I feel a bout this in general because I believe in freedom of use, I just don't want someone else's freedoms to impact me down the line in a negative way.

The American RV industry needs some foreign competition to force their quality standards up. I own a Grand Design 2600 RB, a great trailer. They all fall apart from brand new faster than an 80's Chrysler K-car though. I did tow it at first with a 2014 Ram 1500 rated at 13,600. It did the job "fine" for weekends here and there. That truck was replaced after a short time though, a half ton is too weak for any extended multi state, all weather travel.

Most sway towing with 1/2 ton trucks is because 1) tires sidewall isn’t strong enough. 2) over correcting with weight distribution hitch. You corrected the squat, but it also lighten the tongue. WDH meant to correct a reasonable squat, it you over correct it, weight is not only redistributed to the vehicle front axle, but also trailer axles, which could make your tongue weight less than 12%.

My experience as a rental property manager backs up your gut feeling on the matter. Tenants are rougher because ultimately they do not have to fit the bill long-term. Think of these as a hotel on wheels and how often have you personally seen or heard of damage done by prior guests? It's no different for these RV's, its actually more likely since RV's do need a bit more tender care than your average hotel room considering the lighter weight construction of some items.
