This video is about Towing our Jeep with our 24' Winnebago View. We love to explore when we get to our destination. We feel that if we stay somewhere at least for a week or more we really can see it and get a feel for an area by day tripping with our Jeep or bicycles. We have a 5000 pounds towing capability and our Jeep is 4800 pounds, so it is pushing the limit. We do unhitch when we face a steep grade and travel light in our RV to keep our gross vehicle weight under control.
For our braking system here is the link: rvibrake.com/ and here is our link for the tow bar amzn.to/2h0l3nS
Welcome to our KZbin channel, Follow Your Wanderlust! Where we share some of our adventures, work camping tips and favorite spots.
We are Anja and Bob and we have been together for 28 years, we both have been born with the Wanderlust Gene and can't get enough of wandering and exploring this beautiful world. We have lived in California, New Mexico, Colorado and Hawaii, but have wandered many states and countries. We are Full-Time RV-ers and travel and work camp in a 2010, Winnebago View 24A Diesel Sprinter. We like to bring our 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited with us to explore where the RV can't go. We are not retired yet so we have to work on the road, we work camp at National parks, Forest Service and State parks and design some t-shirts and stickers and make some jewelry that are inspired by our travels. We will be selling those on our new website soon. We enjoy boon docking in nature or dry camping off grid along the ocean, in deserts and in the mountains. Our other passion is searching for treasures, one of those is a real Treasure Chest hidden by a fascinating gentleman named Forrest Fenn. If your hitch should ever on hock from the trailer as you were driving, then if you have the two blue cables crossed then the hitch would land on them, the way you gut it, that would not, and every other hitch set up says to cross them.

I've been planning to do this for a few years. I just saw 'C' on a Sprinter platform last week. It looked awkward with everything hanging over the wheels. Is that what you are towing with? Thanks for the video. I'll probably have to lighten up the jeep - get a no frills sport to keep weight down?

Hi Nick and thanks for watching!! Sorry it took awhile to get back to you. We have towed our Jeep thousands of miles. There are a few places we don’t. We don’t tow on dirt roads and on very steep grades like 7 to 10 percent. With respect to the grades, we are at full gross combined weight, so I try to take it easy on the chassis. Otherwise the Sprinter performs great, and gets 13 to 14 while towing.

Hi Phillip and thanks for watching! We had our set up installed by Transwest in Frederick, CO. They did a great job. They also installed a charge line in the wiring to keep the battery charged while using the braking system. I wish I had an answer for you for the route of the wiring for the brake lights.

I went with a Hopkins HM56200 Wiring Kit, it's plug and play, fairly easy to install, but only has a 4-way flat...no charge line...but I went with a Ready Brake, all mechanical, no electric needed, and my manual (2007 Jeep Wrangler JK) says to disconnect the battery when towing.....so not using the jeep's battery for anything....don't think I need the charge line. Jeeps lights work fine. Also went with Ready Stop RS5000 for breakaway system....has monitor for dash of motorhome, draws its power from a positive connection at motorhome and a negative connection at the Ready Brake. The monitor shows when the jeep's brakes are engaged.

If you leave the ignition in the on position then why does your 12volt plug go dead?
@southkonalopaka

Chief Stones Hi and thanks for watching the video. On the newer Jeeps the steering wheel doesn’t lock. So when I’m towing I just pull the keys out of the ignition. The wiring from the motor home to the Jeep runs the running and turn and brake lights. We also have a braking system in the Jeep that helps us while we are towing it. It plugs into a 12v outlet . It’s like a small air compressor with a piston that pushes the brake petal. Without the Jeep running the battery doesn’t get charged. That’s why in the wiring from the RV to the Jeep, we also have a “charge” line to keep the Jeep’s battery charged while using the braking system. Hope this answers your question for you.

Curious on cost so $1250 for RVI and $485 for tow bar. What other items did you need? I'm thinking of an aluminum trailer and a smaller car instead. It removes the hassle of having a manual transmission, has brakes too, can go in reverse and I can use it for other things as well. Down side is storing it at a campsite.
@FollowOurWanderlust
@FollowOurWanderlust 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video JSMZeez! The total cost for the install was $5000. Not inexpensive. We had it done in Colorado. All Jeeps that are four wheel drive can be towed 4 down. Ours has a automatic transmission and it takes less than 1 minute to set it for towing. Because of our gross combined weight of the rv and Jeep, a trailer was out of the question. Either way of trailer or not, just do what works best for you.

Hi and thanks for watching our video. Our Jeep weights 4800lbs. The hitch on the View is rated for 5000. We do use a auxiliary braking system on the Jeep because of being at the full gross combined carrying capacity of the View. That number is 15,250lbs. Since hitching up and unhitching only takes a few minutes, we unhitch on long steep grades. It is worth it. Having your Jeep with you opens up more exploring which equals more fun.

why do you need to set up wifi in the jeep when you're towing it? (the antenna you hung from the visor)
@FollowOurWanderlust
@FollowOurWanderlust 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne-Marie and thanks for watching. The antenna on the visor is so that the brake system can communicate with the controller in the RV. With the controller you can test the brake system to make sure it is working properly. The controller also has other functions like adjustments for the weight of the tow vehicle. I hope this answers your question.

We had this Jeep before this Winnebago and it weight 4800 pounds and this model was rated to tow 5000. We try to travel light inside our RV, since the Winnebago has a gross combined vehicle weight ( 15250 pounds) RV + tow. If I would buy a Jeep now I would buy the 2 door Jeep because it weighs almost a 1000 pounds less. Also on steep grates or bad weather like snow, ice or wind we unhook and drive separate for safety. Thanks for watching Linda! No we don’t use accessory mode. The 12v outlet in the center console is “always on”. Also, in the wiring from the rv, there is a charge line to keep the Jeep’s battery charged while going down the road using the braking system. So have the Jeep in the off position and pull your keys out. The steering doesn’t lock on Jeeps, which makes it great for towing.

Good evening, Thank you for information video towing a jeep with your Winnebago View. I just has a question (s) 1) how much does your jeep weight (GVWR)? I have a similar motor home (Regency Ultra Brougham 25 TB) built on a Mercedes 3500 chassis. I would like to tow a jeep similar to your, but concerned about the weight of the Jeep (especially 4 doors model) . Thank you.

Hi and thanks for watching the video. Our Jeep weights 4800 pounds. I took it to a truck scale. The Sprinter Chassis is rated at 11,030 pounds gross vehicle weight and 15,250 gross combine weight. The gross combined weight, is of the total weight of the chassis plus what your are towing. There should be a sticker on the inside of the door on the driver side that tells you the weight of your vehicle empty and the gross combined weight. From there you just do the math.

I was not expecting this obviously did my research seeing folks like you towing a jeep with a View already. Are you getting your ATF changed very often? Driving in manual up in grades? Wondering if the View just can't do it long term or if I got a lemon...
@FollowOurWanderlust

Hi Tom Bartlett, thanks for Watching and subscribing! We service our motorhome every year by the Mercedes Benz dealer. We live full time on the road so every 5000 miles we get it done instead of the recommended 60.000 miles. When they change the fluid, there is a drain plug on the torque converter and that fluid gets changed also. We DO NOT tow on steep grades, we unhitch and my wife drive the Jeep. I guess we drive easy and no more than 5 hours a day that may help too. Towing is always hard on everything, but for us it is the only way, we love to explore when we get somewhere.

You are towing a Jeep Unlimited which I believe exceeds the towing capacity of your View (GCWR-GVWR=4220 Pounds?). Please correct me if I'm wrong. Have you had any issues because of this? Any issues going up hills or in mountainous areas?
@FollowOurWanderlust
@FollowOurWanderlust 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob and thanks for watching the video. I weighed our Jeep and it came out to 4800lbs. The specifications for the View is 5000lbs, so it’s close, but still fine. The hitch weight is not much due to 4 down towing. Then there is rolling weight. On flat terrain it is 10 percent of what you are towing. As far as steep grades, 6 to 7 percent, if it is long I unhitch to take it easy on the Sprinter chassis. 5 minutes to unhitch and 5 to hitch back up. My View is a 2010 and my chassis is a 2008. So my 3.0 V6 turbo diesel is 154hp and 280 foot pounds of torque. The newer Sprinters have 288 and 325 so the should do better. While towing the Jeep I get 13mpg. I hope my answer helps with some of your questions.
@robertrican
@robertrican 4 жыл бұрын
@@FollowOurWanderlust Thanks for the reply. We have a 2016 Winnebago Via. The hitch has a rating of 5000 pounds however the calculated maximum towing is the GCWR (15250)-GVWR (11030)=4220 pounds. I was concerned because we just bought a new Jeep Rubicon 2-door that has a curb weight of 4600 (according to one site) while another site said it was 4132 for a 4-door 2016 Rubicon. Based on other information you posted earlier and your history, I'm no longer concerned. We to plan to disconnect in mountainous areas. And we also get over 13 MPG towing. The key is regular maintenance of the Mercedes mechanical system. Thanks for the video, I'm now a subscriber.

Greg - I am going to go out on a limb here and say that your unit is not really rated to tow a 5000 pound vehicle. I have a 2017 MBS Sprinter and tow a 2 Dr Jeep JKS which comes in just under 4000 pounds. I looked at the spec sheet for the view, and it does say tow is 5000, but Mercedes has rated all MBS units with a 4000 pound max tow on the vehicle being towed. Maybe the confusion lies in the fact that the hitch is rated at 5000 pounds, but that does not (necessarily) mean you can tow 5000 pounds since it is the frame, driveline and engine that determines weight restrictions. You may want to have a further look into this. You have a nice rig and I'd hate to see you do damage based on not having the right information. Enjoy,
@FollowOurWanderlust

Hi Michael, Thank you for watching our channel. The weight limits on the 3500 MB chassis are the gross vehicle cargo capacity which is 11030 pounds. This is the weight of the vehicle, plus anything else added including passengers. Winnebago has a tag on the inside of the drivers door that lists the weight. Every model weighs different. The gross combined weight for the 3500 MB chassis is 15250 pounds, which is the weight of the vehicle plus what you tow. The weight of the chassis when loaded will determine the weight that you can tow max. We don’t recommend that everyone do this, but this is what we do with no problems. We have towed our Jeep about 20,000 miles. Thanks!

Thank you for watching and subscribing! Sorry I did not get back with you earlier. The road master towing system we have bolts directly to your frame and not your bumper. It’s underneath your bumper, so it should work for yours.

Confused - you tow in the "park" position? I thought you put both in neutral to tow, but then you turned if off and put it in park and said tow in park.

Thanks for watching the video. The great thing about the newer Jeeps with automatic transmissions is that when you tow 4 wheels down, the transfer case is in neutral and the transmission in park. It is in the owners manual. Plus, as a bonus, the steering wheel doesn’t lock. Jeeps are very easy to set up for towing. And they are fun to drive when you get to your destination.

I tow my Jeep Wrangler behind a class C RV based on the Ford E-450 van. I am mulling over the idea of swapping to a Sprinter based RV like yours. How does the Sprinter do in towing? I imagine since you are in Colorado you hit some much bigger mountains than I have in the SE. How does it do going up and down those mountains? Thanks.

+Hi Greg Macklem thanks for watching. Our Winnebago is a 2010 and has 154hp and 280 foot pounds of torque. The newer ones have 188hp and 325 foot pounds of torque. What you have to pay attention to is your gross combined carrying capacity, which is 15250 pounds and your towing capacity of 5000 pounds. Our Jeep is a 4 door weighting 4800 pounds and now that we are full time we are right at gross combined capacity. Ours does well under most conditions, but on some of the longer and steeper grades like on the I70 going to the Eisenhower tunnel and Vail Pass, we unhitch and drive over separate. We have noticed that we really like our braking system for towing down a steep grade! We just got 14.7 mpg driving 6 hours up and down some smaller grades on our latest adventure along the west coast. Hope this answers your question.

Thanks for the quick response. I think my RV would get up the hills eventually, I more worry about getting down them. :) I assume the diesel engine provides good engine braking? You are getting twice the MPG I get. I get 8.5 mpg at best.

+Greg Macklem agreed you do get up them eventually 😁 and you just have to take it easy on the engine and maybe make sure it is not a hot day. The Diesel engine does well down hill, but you really should use a braking system for your tow. We use the RV Brake2 system in our Jeep.

Hi Richard Hess thank you for watching and subscribing! Yes, it is very possible we met in Limekiln, Bob and I hosted the campground there 3 years ago. We are back in the Big Sur district this summer, not hosting Limekiln, but still there a lot. Love Limekiln 💕

@@FollowOurWanderlust Thanks for video. Funny yesterday I saw a sprinter pulling a white Jeep at Mt Rainier. Well down anyhow. ; ) Your bow and I talked quite a bit at limekiln. We had outrigger canoe on roof there.

Hi there, great video. Do you tow your Jeep with a full tank os fuel?
@FollowOurWanderlust

Thank you Louie and the Lovers for watching and subscribing! We generally have at least a half a tank. We unhitch when encountering a steep grade or when going of highway when camping on BLM land.

Follow Our Wanderlust .... hey thanks. One more question; what kind of mileage do you get while towing your Jeep?
@FollowOurWanderlust
@FollowOurWanderlust 6 жыл бұрын
Our Winnebago gets 14 miles to the gallon when tow. Without the tow it gets 16 to 17 miles.

Thank you for watching and subscribing Anne-Marie! It is at first, but in the Jeep manual it explains it step by step also. The most important things are getting the right set up and doing everything in the right sequence. After a couple off times it is just a few minutes and it is worth it to us to be able to explore where the Winnebago can’t go. If you are planning to tow just practice in your drive way and around your neighborhood a few times before you head out on the open road. Safe travels!

@4xpedition It might work for some, but for us, our Jeep is at 4800 pounds and our hitch rating is 5000 pounds. Sometimes less is more.👍

@4xpedition, I think by trailer the first person was referring to a truck and trailer instead of a Motorhome and tow vehicle.

@@FollowOurWanderlust no I meant a trailer with it on it. That’s what I will do with my Jeep only adds like 1500 lbs
