Hey everyone!
Its our first time towing our caravan with our new Next-Gen Ford Ranger!
In this one we head to the Flinders Ranges in outback South Australia with our caravan to explore a couple of station stays.
We test out the new suspension and try out a couple 4wd tracks. Nearly get lost during a bush walk and visit the Parachilna Pub for an amazing lunch feed.
We have new suspension and are ready for a big year of touring Australia.
Thanks heaps!

Our new Ranger’s great towing. We tow a 20ft duel axel off road van, so far we are getting around 17.5 to 18/100. Love the new tech it’s got.

I have a next Gen ranger and generally leave the shift alone, but occasionally when it gets hilly I will hit the “-“ on the shifter twice and it will lock out 9th and 10th and only shift as high as 8th. It will shift automatically from 1st-8th or up to whatever gear you lock out
@CaravanAdventureAus

Interesting you say that, we've been testing that out ourselves and seems to really like 8th gear, and we are getting about 16.8l/100 which is fantastic 👍🏽

Love the new Ranger. We’ve had the V6 Sport since October 2022. We tow a 2.5T 19’6” Millard. I leave it in Normal mode & in 2wd. Currently getting around 17.7L/100km. Will look at getting a transmission cooler also. Fantastic vehicle with all the tech. Currently I use the standard mirrors & rear caravan camera. I’ve upgraded to airbags & Ironman Foam Cell Pro shocks in the rear. Big fan of the adjustable ToughDog Foam Cell units which I may change to.

Thats awesome mate, have you tried tow mode much? We use that and lock out 9th and 10th and seem to get about 16.8l/100 and then engine braking makes coming down hills much easier. We haven't done airbags but found Constant load springs to work the best for us 👍🏽

Keep up the good work, with the auto as advised in an earlier comment especially on big hills select manual so the auto does not hunt through the gears and overheat, heat is the biggest killer when towing with an auto, if you don’t have one already get a transmission cooler fitted and for the best protection get a scanguage to monitor all you temps plus the ability to read fault codes and clear them, regards Tony

Good vid guys, great to see the van back in the vid. Grab a scan gauge for the ranger so you can keep an eye on the transmission temps. I gave a PX2 ranger and they are notorious for running hot and blowing trans. but monitoring the temps will help. Not sure if the new model would be the same but I wouldn't tow without one now, good to keep an eye on things. A lot of vehicles are designed for cooler climates, they struggle at times in Australia's harshness!

Comments on towing with my next gen ranger. Always tow in tow mode. You can change back to 2wd in tow mode. I dont Don't waste money on scan tool. Transmission temp gauge is already there along with turbo boost. I don't see much temperature difference in 8th, 9th or 10th gear.

Always tow with a lower gear so that the engine is revving higher for the same speed compared to when not towing. Why elevate the revs? Keeps the oil pressure up slightly, lowers the soot levels as the engine is not lugging in top gear, so less DPF burnoffs, so fuel economy will be better. Also the added bonus of higher revs is lower EGTs for the turbo and lower coolant temps because the water pump is turning faster. Using lower gears (7th or 8th instead of 10th) is going to maximise engine longevity when towing and achieving good fuel economy unless Ford have put some thought into their tow/haul mode.

Hey guys I used a WDH for many years and always hated it, so changed rear suspension to 300 constant and everything is smoother towing. Better gear change and better fuel economy, the van movement is more natural instead of feeling forced. So I'm surprised you need it with your upgrade? Nice video.
@CaravanAdventureAus

Hey, WDH are an interesting tool and can take a fair bit of playing around to get them working correctly. Have a black PX3 ranger with 10 speed and a NorWeld tray and tow a 2.8t van. The 10 speed is a very different auto to the previous models and you will see a lot of advise that relates to the older trans and its issues that is just not relevant or wrong. Everyone is different but I dont remove the top gears and let it hunt. It does not change gears a lot and it does not change the temps. I run a scan gauge ($35 Bluetooth) and the main issue is engine temp not auto. On bigger hills I engage sport mode as I don't have the tow mode of the new model. The temp gauge on mine never moves, its is a really poor indicator of whats going on. The 10 speed are designed to run around the 100 deg and the oils are spac'd for and perform at that. The scanguage gives you a good idea of temps and when to back off a little in order to stay within the safe margins (mainly engine) and never cook anything. Summary, just drive it as you are and maybe get some monitoring.
@iamrodos
@iamrodos Жыл бұрын
My suspension could not handle the weight of the NorWeld tray, I got an OME upgrade with 600kg leafs and it sits great with and without the van. Rides nicely. You rear looks a little low without the van on. Hope you are enjoying the canopy, they really are wonderful, all be it heavy.

Ahh, I just watched your suspension upgrade video. Makes sense now. The front is looking higher because of that upgrade and the coming bull bar. I don't have enough weight left for a bull bar, be interested to see which you get.
@CaravanAdventureAus
@CaravanAdventureAus Жыл бұрын
Hey mate thanks for the message, upgrading the suspension has definitely done wonders as you can see how much it's changed, a bullbar will definitely settle the front end and might have to look into Bluetooth scan guages to watch temps from my phone 👍

Great trip. Surprised to see your still only have one solar panel on the roof. Does that give you enough power. I've never been to the Flinders but I was told my fathers ashes were spread around there. At least the Easter break was not to bad weather wise.
@CaravanAdventureAus
@CaravanAdventureAus Жыл бұрын
Yes surprisingly, we don't have any power hungry appliances in the caravan so one solar panel does the job and we haven't run out of power at all since upgrading to lithium 👍 We couldn't have asked for better weather there!

Hi Great to see you back on the road. Have a question regarding your weight distribution hitch do you leave on whilst on rough roads
@CaravanAdventureAus
@CaravanAdventureAus Жыл бұрын
Yes whenever we are towing we leave the WDH on as it helps with keeping weight on the front axle, it helps with traction and handling I've found.

My son just picked up a new Ranger V6 & was told not to tow in 9th & 10th - overdrive gears and not good for it under load (T/C won't lock). I have a Scangauge on my LC200. I tow in 4th (5th & 6th are O/D gears) and I continually monitor trans. temps while towing. They build up a huge amount of heat in gears where the torque converter does not lock - not good for the trans. Cheers. Dave

Thats awesome to know, I've asked the dealerships but they haven't had the answers so far. Great advice though thanks!
@werdna36
@werdna36 Жыл бұрын
@@CaravanAdventureAus You can tow in the overdrive gear on the flat if you can get the torque converter to lock up. You can usually notice when it does this by the slight drop in revs. The generation of heat comes from the clutches slipping when trying to tow or accelerate or when the transmission is under more load going up hills in high gears so don't hesitate to drop down a gear or two on the inclines. The best thing if you plan on doing a lot of long distance towing is get a transmission cooler fitted and change your transmission fluid more frequently. Don't believe the Ford advice that their transmission are "sealed for life" and never need servicing. I have put 200,000km on my Ranger towing but I have changed my transmission fluid roughly every 60,000km. Inspecting your fluid is also a good indicator of high temperature as this will "burn" the fluid causing a dark black rather than bright red appearance.
