I used to ride freight trains and hitchhike and do dead tour live in the forest all over this country. Now I have a four year old daughter. Her mom and I aren’t together and I sometimes get such an intense longing to go hit the road and this song encapsulates so incredibly the bittersweet feeling I get. It resonates with me more then any other I’ve ever heard. Rest in power Townes, you were without equal.

I hitchhiked and busked on the streets and work ski resorts etc thru all my twenties and slowed in my 30’s. Had my first born 5 months ago and my ex broke up with me while pregnant after we decided to ‘keep it’. And I feel both thr e shackles of following her around for the next May years to be with my son and also the beautiful journey of staying up and developing a solid relationship with him. It’s a no brainer to sacrifice wanderlust for a relationship with my son. SOO, we gotta get trips in every once in a while though, to feed that part of us, we can have both, just not the same as the past; which is something we can never have anyway. Much Love and I hope you’re child is healthy and happy thru the years!!
@johnsharkey9143 Жыл бұрын
Musicians, those of us who feed ourselves with our craft, generally speaking, are always longing to be home with our families. But the sad facts are that you have to hit the road to make your paper, you know? Wanderlust? Okay…I get it. I do. But home with your loves, being a father, one that sticks through the tough shit no matter the weather, that is what I believe we long for, once we grow up. The sadness you hear in Townes, is because he never did feel right at home - and the pang of regret is motherfucker. Townes was so loveable to me anyway. I never knew him, but just from his footage on heartworn highways, and hearing kris kristofferson and willie Nelson and the others talk about him, he was a sad and beautifully complicated individual, perhaps not long for a world like this that eats people up who are all heart and beautiful soul.

The absolutely mind tinging urge to get out there and the hopes for something more out of life in general, kinda feeling that tears at you in the morning hours. There’s a girl that loves me more than I can understand and around her there is no worry, yet I will always crave more. Hoping i find my way by 30.

Over the years I have listened a lot to the album "Townes Van Zandt" that features this song but I was so addicted to "Waitin' Around to Die" that I didn't give the other songs enough attention. But on a roadtrip recently this song hit me hard and now I love it endlessly along with "(Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria". Two of the most beautiful, touching love songs ever written. They put me in a very emotional state. I wish I could have seen Townes perform this, it would've moved me to tears for sure. Glad I can watch this video at least ❤
