Townes Van Zandt has been a hidden treasure to me. I discovered this stuff a few months ago and not a song has let me down. This guy was cool!

Townes wrote songs as good as Lennon, Monron, Hendrix, or Young. So fucking good.

Secret, really? Maybe I don't meet too wide a cross section of people. He's regarded as one of the great American poets as I always hear it told.

Last verse with "Beaumont's full of penguins" is absolutely prophetic...

What’s the reference?
@Ralphieboy Жыл бұрын
That was at the time of the great Texas deep freeze when Beaumont was cold enough for penguins

@@Ralphieboy Oh gotcha, thanks. Was before my time lol. But yes, prophetic with Texas' recent freeze storm issues.

This is a great song, and for a long time I've been trying to perfect a cover it. I just figured out my problem: The beat flips between the verse and the chorus. In the verse, the emphasis is on beats one and three; in the chorus, the emphasis is on the two and the four. Maybe this will help someone else out there...

Such a perfect cadence in which he sings. All other singers sound so damn cheesy and superficial by comparison.

+בן וייסמן I don't know about a studio version, but there's a really nice live version on "Live at the Old Quarter." Much better quality than this.

Whats with the penguins and the moccasins leavin strange designs. Is this a reference to change in weather, or things changing with time? Anyone else have any theories. Im probably way off?
@Maxinator11-117 жыл бұрын
Norbit CleaverHook I was wondering the same thing. He seemed to be an animal lover and mentions the penguins here. He also seemed to be steeped in nature. Wrote about weather and the effects of the outdoors. He also messes with time. Could be a reference to the Ice Age. The Cajuns were not there so it happened 200+ years ago. It's poetry ... mysterious. Townes slipped in some humor here. Peguins wearing mocassins!!?? Maybe Jim Carey (Mr Penguin) can figure it out. Hah☺️
@rockerfly887 жыл бұрын
I think the moccasins are snakes...like water moccasins...leaving strange, slithery, snake prints in the snow. Strange designs. Maybe it's a whole "Hell hath froze over" kind of reference
