So besides no insurance you will see these people run on worn down tires, bad brakes, defective suspension and steering and so on, making them a lot more likely to get into an actual accident. If you can not afford the running costs of a car, of which one is insurance, you should not get a car. Simple as that.

They're really starting to crack down on uninsured drivers in our state. With more and more police cars equipped with license plate readers. They have instant access to the states database of insured drivers. No insurance is an automatic impound, $500.00 fine. Also some insurance companies are now requiring 6 months paid in advance. No more one month payment to start insurance just to plate a vehicle.

In Maryland, if your insurance lapses, the company tells the MVA. The fine is $150 for the first 30 days and $5 for each additional day. They suspend the registration and can suspend your drivers license and professional license.

You end up with 'Forced insurance.' It protects the lien holder but doesn't include liability. Just when you think your payments are over and you check on the payoff amount, you find out you owe $400-$700 more per month for each month the lien holder didn't have proof of coverage.

Here in my state you get a ticket and a court date if you have no insurance. Then in court you have to provide proof of insurance, and it usually is high risk insurance because of the ticket. But they don't take your car. You have to prove insurance when you buy plates every year for 5 years.
