School isn't just about education. It's also about socialization. Home school kids aren't always the best at playing nice with others. I'm a school choice advocate. I went to 14 years of Catholic school and I definitely benefitted.

I think the biggest misconception is that home educated children don’t socialise or see other children. My children have attended both school and were homeschooled. They socialised more when they were home educated and with children of different ages. I always felt children that are homeschooled had better communication skills particularly with adults. I do agree that social and emotional development is a major part of a childs development. You didn’t have the luxury of having 30 children around your kids all day so you had to be very intentional with socialising. If you are just sitting at home that isn’t homeschooling it’s called neglect.

@@havok6280 I think I see what you’re saying. I’m not entirely sure how homeschooling works in your part of the world. However there are kids who attend weekly activities, workshops, book clubs and field trips etc where it is organised by members in our city. People enrol onto it based on child’s interest or needs. The members choose based on first come and then a list is generated to uphold fairness. So parents do not know or decide who gets to be around the child. Most parents have their childrens close friends with similar interest doing regular things together as well as meeting lots of different people they may not particularly get along with. My kids have benefited from meeting people from different walks of life with different beliefs/non belief as well as having the ability to explore interests they wouldn’t have had in a school setting. I will say there are those parents who keep themselves separate not all home educators. Similarly to the fact that parents may take their children to catholic or faith schools rather than state/public school. Some may perceive that as limiting too. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will have an inability to socialise or cant deal with people of different faiths/non faith. Plus the kids meet school kids during weekends and holiday clubs. homeschooling helped my kids foster a love for learning, explore and develop their likes at their own pace. Anyway thank you for sharing your thoughts and engaging.

Biomedical scientist here and I homeschool my children too. We wanted to foster a love for learning. I have the most artistically inclined children and I had to make education and each subject heavily focused on art and nature. I would stay up all most nights preparing studies, learning how to teach, and my development, no body knows everything. Before this I was bit of an unschooler and transitioned into structured learning. It wasn’t easy as I am very structured and had to learn to relax and enjoy the process. I did this for 9 years they attend schools now and miss all trips, activities and outdoor learning we did together. I encourage everyone to do it, if it’s what’s best for your child.
