This is SO real. I have never been the type of girl to wear makeup or do much to my naturally curly hair. My husband fell in love with me and my natural features, so I decided to not wear makeup on our wedding day. I also didn’t straighten and style my hair. I wore it natural and up in a low bun, because I wanted to feel and look like myself. (Which my husband adored!) But during our engagement, I had so many women judge me and say rude things to me about those choices. I received so many rude comments pressuring me to straighten my hair, wear heavy makeup and false lashes, and even get my nails done a certain way. Even women in my own FAMILY were shocked and disgusted at the idea that I wouldn’t wear makeup, get unnatural things done to my hair, and wear extensions......It always upset and confused me because I’ve always been confident in my own skin, and my husband loves me and prefers me the way I naturally look. So to have so many people suddenly have so many overbearing strong opinions about what I looked like on MY wedding day.... I never understood it. Still don’t. 🤷🏻♀️

This is my favorite podcast so far! It has such a message of "you are fine and lovely as you are." And it definitely applies in so many circumstances. I love how honest and true this discussion is. I have always wondered about this and situations like this. People are so judgemental and the media has definitely had a negative effect on body image and insecurities since the beginning of time. I love this discussion! I love how y'all (Lisa in perticular) are using y'all's platforms to question the violence, self hate, shade, and toxicity of modern culture!

I got married about 5 years ago now, and I can’t tell you the amount of pressure that was put on me, not so much to lose weight, but for the reception and everything else. My husband and I wanted a small reception, not a ton of guests, and just a generally small wedding. We were pressured into inviting like 200 people, we had to get a giant venue, most of the people didn’t even show up for the ceremony, just for the reception afterwards! I was outraged! Not to mention, everyone wanted to be a bridesmaid. I chose my two sisters to be bridesmaids, he chose his two brothers to be groomsmen. But his brothers girlfriend wanted to be maid of honor because she wanted to walk down the isle with him, even though she hated me, and I barely knew her. Then my husbands sisters wanted to be bridesmaids, so we were willing to extend the bridal party to include them, but they ended up going rogue and buying their own bridesmaids dresses without even consulting me. When I was upset about it because they didn’t match my other bridesmaids dresses, and because they hadn’t run them by me, they said that “the dresses you picked weren’t our style.”. Like excuse me! Whose wedding is this anyway? Then they dropped out of the bridal party because I told them I wanted them to get different dresses that matched my theme. They were furious because the dresses weren’t able to be returned. “Well, you should have thought about that before you bought them without my ok! It still makes me mad after almost five years. I can’t stand the way weddings are twisted into something so materialistic, and that the bride and groom are pressured into so many stupid decisions. And that I was made out to be some sort of bridezilla for wanting things my way instead of everyone else’s.

When y’all asked “who said that we have to be perfect?” Honestly, I think it’s other women. There’s a toxic comparison culture out there. Women have made weddings a social media show. Who has the better dress? Who has the better venue? And a big one, who’s pictures look best on Instagram? It’s become a show.

When I got married, not a ceremony and just on paper, I actually worked that day and had to rush to the place we'd sign the papers. I changed my clothes (I think it was a jeans and some blazer) and my hair was all messed up. Because people working there gave me weird looks, I started feeling bad about myself and didn't want pictures taken. There were some other couples getting married that day who were all dressed up and loud and just the opposite of what I like and want. Still it made me feel like I am doing all of this wrong. But oftentimes the biggest wedding parties end with the shortest marriages I've come to notice. This was just about us and I am actually proud that I did it my own way. I don't like to be the centre of attention. Having some people with you that you TRULY want to share this with and bringing home-made food instead of paying thousands for catering etc is my personal goal😂

I sold wedding dresses for years and SO many people would try to order dresses in sizes smaller than they were. But the issue with that is it's done by measurement and you can never tell exactly where the weight will come off. It was alarming we even had to make a policy about it.

The amazing thing about this particular podcast is so profound. It’s not just about toxic wedding culture - it’s about how as women we are kind of objectified in normal life and then when engagement and planning a wedding come into play, the objectification and toxicity is magnified! But all of this to say - I LOVE how not only are y’all super passionate about empowering others who feel like they are less than, but you’re also offering incredibly valuable advice AND how to stand up for yourself with words and phrases to shut down the attacks and negativity before it gets overwhelming. This podcast is about BOUNDARIES and how to find, enact, and draw the line for self-protection. (At least, that is my overall takeaway) Absolutely full of wisdom and sound advice. Well done 👏🏻 love your podcasts, videos, content, and support ❤

I think the pressure in my mind definitely comes from an old fashioned idea - that the only image you have of your great-grandparents is of their wedding day, and how special and picture perfect life needed to be. But now we have so much content of us, and imagine all of the media that our grand-children will have of us before, during and after our wedding!
@kjeracarroll4504 жыл бұрын
Thank you for bringing this up!! At one point I got to where I didn’t even want to have a reception. I just wanted to have the ceremony and be done with it, and I was married 18 years ago! We did a simple reception and we got called tacky for being simple. People were shocked how simple I kept it. I paid for the wedding myself so I wasn’t ever going to have something extravagant anyway. The ceremony meant more to us anyway. It is the covenants we made with the Lord that are more important! And why do we think we need to look different from who we are on our wedding day? All that matters is how you feel on that day! Now how you look. Yeah we have pictures but, why worry about these things! Too much pressure, too much negative thinking. It just ruins something precious and should be a good day!

Other ways to avoid peer pressure: 1) change the subject so they dont keep talking about it 2) go to the party with someone you trust who wont pressure you or also doesnt engage in the activity you dont want to bc its harder to pressure 2 people than 1 3) if youre in an uncomfortable position and you want an out, have a plan with a parent/sibling/friend that you can text them something discreet (ex “hows the dog doing”) so they know to call you with an “emergency” so the reason for leaving isnt on you 4) (for drinking more specifically) make an excuse like “oh i have to wake up really early tomorrow morning so i cant drink tonight” so you dont have to go into the whole explanation of why ever you dont drink
