What toxic work culture behavior would you add to the list?
@jeffrybrickley870
@jeffrybrickley870 2 жыл бұрын
I would add the eternal loop of improvement and increasing volume metrics. If producing 10,000 lines of code is good then 20,000 lines is better. The person who produces the most lines of code in shorter times is the best producer. Even if that person is crashing the shared code of all the other programmers. Volume metrics don't always work. I would argue that in respect to humans volume metrics are more toxic than not, they end up more related to those endless hours.

One time, I gave a 2 month notice to let me job know that I planned to take 1 week off work for vacation and it was approved. I was shammed for not answering work emails/calls and not being a team player while I was away for VACATION. It is against “company policy” to do this but they don’t care. What's the point of having a nice home, new truck, and lots of other Big Boy toys if they're just gonna sit in the garage collecting dust because you have no time to use them and enjoy them because all you do is work and sleep? My boss embodies this toxicity. When the Virus hit, I was expected to answer calls immediately from clients as we transitioned to working from home. It is not an issue at all that we let clients go to our message line and we return the calls at a later time; after all, we could be on the phone with another client. Nobody believed there was an issue and there were no complaints. My boss wanted me on the phone whenever a call came in. Well, turns out the pandemic really messed with my home life. I lost my child care and preschool for my 3 year old and on top of that my parents were vulnerable so needed help to run errands such as shopping for food. My boss was all talk about "flexibility" and "taking care of ourselves". When I explained that my life was in a state of temporary chaos and that live calls would be difficult, I received a nasty email telling me that I am to do what I am told. Period. That he's the boss, and that my family is never to be brought up again as reason for not doing my job. Vuck that guy.

Let me tell you that quitting your job is the BEST thing you could have done. I was also 100% burnt out and left my job at the end of August. Do I worry about the future? Yes, of course. However, I am using this time to hone my job search/interview skills and utilizing free/low cost resources to up my job skills. As for free resources: I'm not sure where you live, but see if your city/town has a local job center. Your local library may also have resources you can use. If you don't already have a LinkedIn account (it's free), get one and start networking (lots of free resources on what to do and how to do it). There's also a ton of free content on KZbin (such as Jennifer's channel) that can help you in your career, and revamp your resume, LinkedIn and interview skills. Lots of careers have professional associations you can join where you can network as well. In the meantime, see if you can volunteer opportunities related to your career - even if it's one day a week, or remote, it's something you can add to your resume. As for low cost: Udemy is a great website where classes start as low as $12.99. Coursera and edX (edx.org) also has a bunch of free courses. Good luck!!!

I told him what I make and what my true job title was. I am making 37% less I should be doing the same position at minimum range for a private company that kept what the real job title entailed. The man told me they screwed me out 70% of my worth. This company is a red flag. He told me he was never shopping their again and to take his advice. Also, when I got hired on. One toxic coworker gloated about how one department had a walk out, because the company wouldn't give them a raise. Oh, they lay off people to replace them with cheaper laborer. They're losing a lot of repeat clients now do to this. Many businesses are trying to find business owners that focus on the employees who then focus on them. If the employee is told focus on the customer and not themselves then the employee should eventually get out there and that company doesn't want employees, but just customers. That they're holding on to Mario's red flag. Also, I was told that when the ownership of the company was passed down that the infrastructure is running away.

Every single office job i've ever had was toxic to the core and each and every one of them had all the check boxes checked off for every single toxic trait. And please don't do the "well ur the common denominator from all those jobs so it must be you". I was always a culture fit problem cuz i hate gossip and i hate being fake. But i always did my job excellently. I was NEVER a dick to anyone either. Now i work part time at a gas station like those little huts where it's only one person working at a time. And even there, the customers show all the toxic traits being dicks all the time, AND the colleagues that i have to switch shifts with were dick heads too with their false accusations and gossip trying to get me fired or micromanage me. One of the colleagues even would not let me through when trying to walk by him after saying excuse me, cuz it's a really small building, and i almost poked my eye out squeezing by him and almost hitting the corner of a shelf with my eye. So even though i'm working alone during my shift i'm still facing dickheads left and right. It got so bad with my colleagues that i spoke to HR and the HR person said "one person in the building at a time only from now on to avoid conflict". HOW FUCKING TOXIC ARE HUMAN BEINGS IT'S INCREDIBLE NOBODY IS NORMAL ANYMORE. Even when working a solo job the people around u STILL find a way to attack you.

That's a misconception that the US military is top down leadership. It isn't in practice. In most combat units the situation is so fluid that the commanders in the rear don't have the information required or ability to make decisions quickly enough. In those scenarios small unit leaders are given wide latitude and trained to make decisions independently.

Great video, Jennifer. I would also add "not paying interns" to the pile of toxic work things for a simple reason - if you don't value someone who is there to learn, it says a lot about how much you value the actual full-time employees. Not accepting remote work is another one (comes from lack of trust and micromanagement), not taking complaints seriously from employees because they make the company look bad (huge red flag), asking someone to prove they are sick if they want to take time off etc.

A toxic employer i once worked for fired an employee who merely asked about leave application. He called her a slacker and fired her without notice. Just suddenly blocked her on all emails and WhatsApp group chats and had a company meeting to conduct a smear campaign on that employee, calling her a “slacker”, and threatened that “non-performers will be put to task”. He set unrealistic expectations and was passive aggressive, expected us to answer on weekends and after office hours, and would have rage episodes and temper tantrums. I’m so glad I made the decision to leave as the burnout and panic attacks were making me so depressed, a complete nervous wreck. Toxic work culture is everywhere and I’m sick of it being normalized, leaving so many employees burnt out and shattering their confidence and self esteem in the process. I’ve seen so many people in my life put up with nonsense from toxic narcissistic employers, and these managers in positions of power get away with their manipulation and abuse.

I had a former manager that was sending work emails during the overnight hours. This manager worked early in the morning to coordinate work with our European offices. Then he would work a full day as well. His employees questioned him about his work life balances. He had risen up to a mid level management position. He had been with the small company for 20 years or so. Then in 2017, he was arrested with state charges of a sexual offense against a minor. The penalty for these state charges would have been about one year in prison. Instead, he was charged with federal charges. He pled guilty. He was sentenced to 12.5 years in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release. The press release from the US Attorney's office identified what they found on this manager's computer. It was the worst of the worst of child pornography. This information explained what he was doing on his computer at all hours of the night. He probably was taking a break from his improper activities to reply to a work email or two.

Hi Jennifer, yes it makes me upset that toxic work culture is everywhere. In post secondary, many of my classmates are working their butts off and I sense them feeling burnt out, miserable, tired, and not being able to meet too high expectations. We really need to know who we are, have healthy boundaries, and assertive communication

I think its in a lot of places but not them all. I worked in a College library for almost 20 years and in that time I can count on one hand the negative encounters I had with co-workers. I then moved into healthcare, working in a hospital and let me tell you that was a culture shock. The moment I walked into that place I felt it. I had more negative experiences with other members of staff in one day than I did in my almost 20 years in the library. I'll be returning to the library soon and I am absolutely relieved. Non-toxic workplaces do exist but they are rare, when you find one, dont do what I did and leave to see what they grass was like on the other side.

I work in a place where there is a boys club and I will not be s part of it. I work hard as a mechanic and I am usually the only one here that works while everyone including my boss sits in the break room just talking and having a good time. I work on a machine while another one is just sitting there waiting for my job to be done while there are higher paid guys doing nothing. This is so stressful and not cool. I'm working on my escape this year. Once I leave they can figure out what they lost.

Thank you for this video Jennifer! I just have to get my experience off my chest because I still can't believe it happened to me a couple of months into a new job with a national, reputable nonprofit media organization (I don't see myself hanging around there much longer). Here's a great example of "Respect my authority by top down leadership". Me to manager: "Would it be possible to speak to "so and so" in finance about training and going live with this particular job duty." Manager: (becomes very enraged and raises his voice) "Don't you dare go above my head or it will end very very badly for you! Of course, not by me, but by others!" Me: (Mouth drops open and I head out of his office in disbelief) WTF?!!

@@jenniferbond7073 I put in my notice the day I got back from vacation. It was the best decision I have made in a long time. I used the first two months to finish my undergraduate degree. In the last month I filed paperwork for a business. Using what I have picked up from "The E Myth Revisited" I'm turning my hobby and passion into a sustainable business model. It has been a long time since I was this excited about work each day.

I was texted on the Monday of my vacation week to attend a lunch on the Friday with my married couple bosses who wanted to discuss an urgent change in the business. I reluctantly agreed and on that Friday morning 2hours prior the lunch was cancelled but we could still meet the sales rep at a restaurant if we wanted. It was a 45 min meeting that could have been an email. THAT was the first of many nails in the coffin with those turds and the toxic work culture I endured. I’m just exiting another toxic workplace where gaslighting, micromanaging, undermining and denial was the norm. SO done

I can absolutely relate to this...I dreamt about being a stay at home writer dad but reality had other plans... I got multiple phone calls from my toxic boss when I was in bad shape during Covid... I hadn't slept the entire night and was suffering from terrible nausea but he only cared about the work that got effected due to my absence... I wasn't even allowed to take a half day to get vaccinated after my isolation period ended cos my boss was too pissed off that I stayed at home for two weeks... I am expected to answer every phone call without delay even during off days and I can't leave work even an hour earlier to catch the bus back home... It's due to this harsh reality that I cant even think about taking a vacation even though I have 20 paid days written in my contract

Lol I once worked with a small business where the boss was always very ‘busy’. Imo he’s just busy because he doesn’t manage his time efficiently. They expect the employees to be physically present or give us stupid work to do, but most of the time we’re just around with nothing to do. Then they defend ‘no off days’ with the fact that we don’t even work that hard/most of the time we don’t even have anything to do. Wow.

I work for a plastic company. I don't work in the office I work in the back production. I have been there almost 7 years. We have always worked 12 days straight. Just recently around July or August they started letting us work Monday to Saturday. Have Sunday off then come back and work Monday to Friday. Let me tell you that was rough. It's better since they are letting us have Sundays off. And you are right it totally drains you. And in the back you don't have time to be on youtube or just relax. It's always go go go hurry hurry hurry fast faster. It's very stressful!

I don’t know if I agree fully with your point regarding leadership. I think that many organizations still require a certain degree of top down leadership and management. Good leaders should still definitely seek insight and feedback from their teams, and allow their employees to have a voice, but I don’t think it is bad to have someone who can synthesize that knowledge and make ultimate decisions. The reality is that decisions have to be made and in large organizations especially not everyone is going to be satisfied. Within reason I think employees have to respect those decisions. If they ultimately can’t do so, then they should seek formal ways to respond or begin seeking other employment. From my experience, no place is perfect and thus you have to pick your battles.

I love the way the Jennifer has "woken up" over the years, started out a little bit corporate simpy (sorry), but NOW just lets rip with both barrels and tells it exactly like it is, where most people deny (through corporate brainwashing) that any of this negative stuff even exists. The only other person on YT who does this is Joshua Fluke, but he might just go a little too far sometimes.

I agree with all your points. In my hometown Kolkata, toxic work culture has forced literally millions of young people to leave the city and settle elsewhere. Jobs in Kolkata are not only scarce, is misandrist and lack basic business ethics. Unpaid overtime, long working hours, non-existent work-life balance and poor salary are the key features of jobs in Kolkata.
