The deep horror hinted at in this franchise has bothered me most of my life. I was about 11 when I saw Toy Story 3. The dump scene really hit me. I have had so many nightmares over the years about being a toy that got discarded. The idea of being a conscious entity trapped in confined area, unable to even die, possibly for centuries is horrifying. This is something the show Black Mirror explores with its episodes on making digital copies of human consciousness

I have a hypothesis about why Buzz Lightyear toys start out the way they do. The boxes have a big quote on the back and if one Buzz is packed in behind another one, it will be stuck there reading about himself until taken out of the package. Maybe that's somewhat unique compared to other toys that would have more explicit "toy" imagery on their packaging.
@everlastingdragon452011 ай бұрын
Or because they all just have a backstory hammered into their brains. But from *where?* The act of making them? They're not that advanced. The collective belief that that's what Buzz Lightyear is/should be? Then could the backstory in each BL's head be changed if the public perception of the toy is changed or the backstory is reworked? How far can I stretch this? If someone where to convince a vast majority of the public that the BL toys were dangerous for whatever reason, would their outlook change because of that? If there was a reboot, would the new BL toys all get a "backstory" in their heads that aligns with that? What about things like retcons or plot errors? Would those transfer over? This might be even worse.
@lightspaceman506411 ай бұрын
As a kid I thought that all toys had to go through a similar process of figuring out they’re toys but nah. Maybe it’s something to do with the Buzz personality? Maybe being a space ranger makes them perfectly ready to believe they’re on a strange planet no matter what toys they meet. Which to me if that’s true then the creators did that completely by accident. Which might have horrifying implications.

Andy's dog is named Buster. Bo Peep really isn't a toy, she's a figure on a lamp makes you wonder WHAT is a classified as a toy and what can come to life. Woody mentions in 3, if they go sent to attic they could make friends with the Christmas decorations...you mean like the Santas, Elves, the angels, even the Nativity Scene, they're alive, too? or the phone in 3 who only talks if it you answer it/pick up the receiver.

Would their mind break as they realized the humans that surround them will be saved and go to heaven, but they, the actual image of God in human form himself, will be stuck on Earth for eternity?

my problem with 4 is that in 1 buzz thinks he's a real human being. 2 he meets another buzz who thinks he's a real human being. H 3 he understand his mortality as an object that can be destroyed and reaches for his friends in his final moments 4 he doesn't know what a "conscience" is and is told by woody "it's the voice inside you that tells you what you are thinking". So he starts listening to the BuzzLightyearToTheRescue.WAV file that plays when he presses a button like it's the voice of god giving him instructions. He markedly devolves as a character into something he never was. What real human being that discovers he's a toy doesn't know the concept of conscience. Even Woody knows what that means. It's like if Luke in episode 6 said "Hey Han. I hear you talking about this thing called a space ship. What even is that?" He becomes dumb in a dumb way specifically so the writers can deus ex WAVina Buzz into doing whatever is convenient for the plot. he only finds them because the voice tells him to look up for a meteor shower and coincidentally sees woody jumping across rooves

Toy Story 4 fell into the trap that pretty much every franchise falls into when it has too many installments. The characters grew too much by the end of the 3rd movie for the new conflict to make any sense, so the writers extensively walked back their development and even basic abilities to justify making another sequel, ironically to its own detriment. Remember when Buzz taking his own features seriously was played as a joke in the first movie, precisely because he didn't know they weren't real? Now we're supposed to believe that he once again takes them at face value three movies later. It also makes no sense that he wouldn't know what this single word means when they literally all come to life with an innate understanding of language.

@hsandco956010 ай бұрын
For the whole "why do the space toys think they're real" question, i believe that it just has to do with how the movies show us these different toys. All of the toys in the same line as buzz that we've seen in the movies were all freshly out of the box, while any other toy we've seen has been used for a while. Even with the barbies, its never really implied that they even THINK theyre real OR toys, they're not even in BOXES. Probably at some ppint in every toys life, they think that they're what they are, which is something that we do see in "toy story that time forgot", where the dinosaur toys believe that they're real due to not being played with.
@AluVixapede11 ай бұрын
Also horrifying if you think that, only total and complete destruction can possibly end a toy's existence... Because, if all it takes is the act of being created with purpose, and played with, to breathe the spark of self awareness into the object, then that implies there's toys which were made in prehistoric times. Maybe, some of those still exist. Toys which literally existed around the same time of wolves being domesticated to dogs. Toys from actual ice ages. --- And surely, toys from antiquity. Toys which saw the rise of fall of empires. Perhaps even toys which had direct access to the family members of leaders which changed the course of their societies. There must be a wealth of immortal knowledge that, even if they themselves don't understand it's significance, we, would... The value to historians and scientists could not be given a price ... But, it's all walled off because they have a silly rule about not appearing animate in front of humans, oh well lol
@Jebsucks11 ай бұрын
To be fair, while all of that holds water, if living toys were present throughout all of human history, it goes without saying that history would be wildly different in ways that are difficult to even imagine. A 'toy' could serve as an immortal living record-keeper with a precision that, while perhaps not unerring, would allow the history of a tribe to remain within living memory effectively indefinitely. But more than that, imagine all the other things that a living inanimate object could be put up to in the right hands. Things like innocuous toy spies memorizing sensitive information from an inconspicuous shelf, or perhaps toy artisans that are immune to most human weaknesses (they do still seem to need to sleep if nothing else) stealing jobs in ancient history. And of course... there's also the inevitable question of 'what happens when people try to use this to kill one another?' Can a sword be a toy? How about a gun? If it has to be at least vaguely anthropomorphic, then how about a suit of armor? Is there a size limit? Could a full-sized tank be a toy? Aaand then you get a robot uprising, but with marketable action figures... actually wait they made a movie about that didn't they?

Hooooly shit that altered ending just hit me out of nowhere, I had no idea what kind of tiny change you could've made that would improve it so much, and given you prefaced the whole thing by saying you would barely even touch it, I didn't know what to expect. But the moment you delivered the stuttering line by the child, it all came crashing home and my eyes welled up instantly. GOD that would be SUCH a beautiful, subtle, thematically uplifting and emotionally satisfying way to affirm all the right things instead of leaving this backwards ableist implication that actually made it into the movie that "You need to be fixed to be loved". It's such a shame that that's all it would've taken to completely transform that character's conclusion, but I'm so glad I saw it done right here.

Going into your final thoughts, it's crazy how much your analysis reminded me of Dark Souls. You, a toy, have the dark sign, cursed with undeath in an uncaring world. In the end, there are only two options: you can "link the fire", give yourself up [to a child], repeat the cycle, and rekindle the illusion the gods have abandoned. Or you can take the Lordvessel for yourself and become the new ruler over your grim reality (by becoming a 'lost toy'). The only other choice is not to choose; to become Hollowed out, resolved to be a shell of unmotivated, unfulfilled rubbish. ...I can't believe I'm comparing a Pixar film to a Fromsoft game, yet here we are 😂

something I like about the Toy Story franchise is how each movie explores new areas of thee world of toys. first movie: two different kinds of children's bedrooms, and a restaurant/arcade with toy prizes, second movie: toy store and collector's apartment, third movie: daycare centre, garbage dump, fourth movie: carnival, antique store

Okay, you got me. After all the complaints and nitpicks, your ending made a lot more sense to the franchise. “You got a friend in me”. “To infinity and beyond” and all the other messages of togetherness was honestly thrown out in the original but you really did manage to fix the ending to a loved franchise.

Maybe from the writing. Or you voice. Whatever it is. You have a long time subscriber here from now to whenever you decide to stop doing this. I don’t know why I chose to say this over the “Toy Story” breakdown but no matter. You are incredible man! Keep up the amazing work!!

also, i dislike how buzz is so dumb in the 4th movie, the inner voice thing feels so different from how his personality was on the other movies, and also he always was a great leader, and now he feels unsure of how to do that? maybe it's just me great video!
@ArmundJay11 ай бұрын
yes! honestly my biggest gripe (and i have several) with TS4 is how they essentially lobotomized Buzz and turned him into a running gag for the entire movie. he was always my favorite, and the massive character development he went through in the first three movies was just.. completely scrapped??? i have no idea what the writers were thinking.

One thing not a lot of people talk about concerning toy conciseness is the dinosaur people toys from the christmas special. Why were they like programmed to be part of a whole contained society with unique customs right out of the box
@catelynh102011 ай бұрын
I always kind of interpreted it as toys made with intent. That buzz is made with the intent of being a toy tie in with a show, so is supposed to have a story. The barbies are just barbies, sure they have professions, but they don't have specific stories to them. And as forky came to life, bonnie was viewing him as trash, but something dear because she felt alone and "like trash". Her intent was what gave him life, but also set his values. This isn't actually canon, but how i remembered it after watching the movie.

I haven't watched the movies in a long time, but my assumption was always that toys like Buzz are like that because they are plastic and electric, they are "programed" in a sense Woody and the others are usually made from natural materials or just plastic, so their identities are just slightly affected by their "origin" as cowboys, dinosaurs, piggybank, etc

Completely agree on the character growth (or lack there of) for BoPeep (but Disney has had many recent movies where they depend on your familiarity with the characters and not have any growth. Of all the many times I've noticed "Gymnopedie" after being introduced to it as Kraehe's theme in _Princess Tutu,_ this might be the most elevated use of it, hitting me outta left field in the _Toy Story 3_ recap. Aside, that scene really was wild! Not since the interminably long cut to black in _Happy Feet_ did I think a kid's movie was actually _going there._

Your alternate scenes and ending made my heart swell with emotions. I could just imagine how much more positively people would talk about TS4 if it were anything similar. It sucks how often movies arent fully polished because with projects like that, theres so many moving parts as 100s of people are pouring in their labor to make a movie. With tight deadlines and even tighter budgets, a lot of studios cant just rewrite whole stories and throw in new scenes 3/4th into production. Not to mention how many great ideas get shot down by executives, producers, and other higher ups who sometimes aren't fully invested into the movie's story, theme, characters, world, etc etc

So, regarding Buzz thinking he's the actual Buzz Lightyear instead of a toy, I think any toy that's a specific individual will go through the same start, Jessie, Stinky Pete, Woody, all of them will have Buzz's experience. The Barbies are all unique individuals canonically, so they don't have to go through the "I am a toy" phase because they don't have a pre-existing identity they have to overwrite.

I don't think there is a single other Pixar Movie that has as little of a business existing as Toy Story 4. ...and I am saying this confidently knowing that "Finding Dory" and "Monsters University" are a thing. It just took a satisfying ending, completely burned it in front of our eyes and added nothing of importance in it's place.
@dakat513111 ай бұрын
Monster's University from what I've seen is an unnecessary prequel, but at least it's fairly harmless. Toy Story 3 was made out to be a conclusion to the series and then they dug it up to make another movie. A negative amount of necessity.
@wydx12010 ай бұрын
Finding Dory is actually filled with a surprising amount of heart, too. I found myself watching it in a long plane flight and now I'm glad it exists. It builds on top of the first movie, rather than just rehash it like some other unnecessary sequels (even if it feels a bit like a rehash from the premise and the first few minutes).
@sorryjiji10 күн бұрын
Sure they might be "unnecessary" but Finding Dory and Monsters University are generally well-liked, and add something to their predecessors without taking anything away. Toy Story 4 is not well-liked, and it takes away from the beautiful trilogy that already existed.

I guess, I am the only one who never asked about "Why only Buzz toys didn't know they were toys?". Maybe because I thought that all "newborn" toys who recently became sentient think they are the real character, and realisation kicks in some time later, and everyone just lives on after that? Also, toys aren't alive at first, but then they "magically" become alive at some point as it was demonstrated with Buzz and Zorg in TS2? I dunno, my brain just made an explanation for this thing and I never questioned it =\

Hey, I'll update this comment when I'm done with this video. Bur i wantws to throw in my own unwanted sentiment. The scene that always made me cry in Toy Story 3 (so much to the point where it is my least favorite + I refuse to watch the scene) was the scene where Lotso crushes the baby dolls heart. I dont remember it a lot (because, again, I refuse to watch it) but something about that was always gut wrenching to me. I dont know, just felt like crushing someone’s hopes, dreams, and heart. But, could be wrong since I barely remember Edit: Just finished the video. The stutter and GabbyGabby made me SOB and the after credit scene is just *chefs kiss*. You did absolutely perfect!
@Kyrikrliy9 ай бұрын
What i find exceptionally bad about the toys being immortal is that in many cases like with toys that are severely broken they'll just stay like that forever and probably not be able to find a child to take them again. Like, if a toy were to fall into a fire, it wouldn't die but just stay ruined forever and have even worse chances of finding an owner. So not only will they be eternally abandoned and find new people again and again, they will also slowly loose their chances of actually finding someone to care for them.

one nitpicky thing i never really considered is what was woody up to in the 40something years between being produced and being given to andy given his arcs throughout the series i really doubt he had any kid before andy but if he was just kept in the box i imagine he would’ve been more sympathetic to the prospector there’s just a big Backstory Hole there
