Have just restored the sfx on my original troop transport thanks to this video! Thank you so much! Hearing those sounds again (with my own eyes 😜) has rolled back the years! You legend!

When you push the button, push it all the way down and hold for maybe a quarter of a second. By just “pecking” at the button, the device isn’t able to align the record so the needle goes into the correct groove.

The center screw adjusts the tension on the speaker and changes the sound.

Great video. While watching it I remember the scene from Only Fools And Horses. With the doll that said exterminate. Due to someone picking the wrong recorder in the doll. 😊

I have a Troop Transport and it sounds a lot clearer than yours. The loud scraping sound could be from improper disc alignment caused by the missing assembly screw. Even one small screw can affect the pressure that keeps the record disc straight. You can test this by placing a small c clamp on that side and see if it sounds any different. Also, the PVA/wood glue method will not harm the disc or it’s grooves. I’d be more concerned with the lighter fluid. Isopropyl alcohol and distilled water should be fine. That’s how I cleaned mine. Hope this helps.
@Bonedadyo Жыл бұрын
100% agree with you. Mine is very clear and loud. I have a feeling someone tampered and possibly damaged TP’s at some point, especially since there was a screw missing. Wood glue has always worked cleaning used vinyl that I’ve purchased.

Great vid, but could you make custom decals for the interior of the troop transporter, the center wall from the inside towards the front is really needing a targeting screen and a radar screen for the equipment that is on the roof, and you could add some interior details by the seats and doors, that would look cool. Thx

I read a post a while back, and it said that if you hold down the button for about one full second (instead of pushing it quickly and letting go), the sound should play in the correct order and not move around to different buttons.
@toypolloi3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that can be correct. The mechanism is pretty simple, and the tracks on the record are not marked in anyway, so it will always be random.

Thanks for posting this. I like seeing what I'm getting into before taking things apart. Mine didn't work right because a spider laid eggs in the record mechanism.

I use lighter fluid to remove sticker residue and I find it's quite effective, but I do wonder how exactly the gasoline affects some of the plastics. I think 50% pure alcohol, 50% distillated water mix is what they use to clean records, and just pure alcohol should work well as a non-corrosive cleaning solvent.

Nice work. Gotta love old school mechanical analog technology . Simple, effective and can be repaired. Try that with these modern digital "upgrades" people are going on about. Can't fix those. But this will work for another few decades.

To reassemble the drive drive belt , hook it over the little bracket (where you had the screwdriver poking through) put the two halves back together then from the outside (fully assembled) push the belt off the little bracket and it will pop straight back unto the motor . I believe this was how it done at the factory
@RickSFfan6 жыл бұрын
I know I am late to the party, but when Techmoan fixes anything (Walkman units or record players), the first thing he does is replace the rubber drive belts. After 30-40 years, they tend to be stretched out and it makes everything run badly. Shouldn't that be done here, along with a replacement screw for the lost one? That might improve the tension as well.

I had a Batman & Robin talking alarm clock that used a similar set up. The sound degraded, so I took it apart and cleaned the record with distilled water applied with a microfiber cloth, and the needle with isopropyl alcohol. After that, it sounded perfect!

You need to press the button and hold it a second to let the record set to the correct position and then let go. I learned that just playing with mine. Otherwise if you quickly press and let go it will be totally random. P.S. I am aware that this is a older video and i hope this helps. 😁👍

To me it looks like the screw you thought held the spring looks as though it may be used to control the pressure of the needle on the record as you seem to have tightened it all the way perhaps try unscrewing it a bit and see if it reduces the noise at all ? Andsrew

Yeah, pressure on the diaphragm would act to dampen the sound my reducing the amount of travel and adjustment of the screw "should" tune that damping effect.

I am restoring a troop trans port and I would like to see custom decals for the the driver area, the center are could use a monitor or a couple of monitors for scanning and the doors could use some detail like storm trooper gun storage on the inside or something, you probably can put LED's in the driver compartment and the rear troop compartment, just an idea.

When I put the battery in mine the motor just constantly turns, and it doesn't have the spring between the speaker and the grille. Any idea of why it keeps turning?
@equesfuscus8 ай бұрын
Check that the metal arm that touches the contact post is between the needle at one end and the motor at the other. When the needle plays through a track on the record and reaches towards the center, it should reach the contact arm and push it, breaking the contact and turning off the circuit. The lack of spring might not be a problem as long as the pressure on the speaker, and in turn the needle under it, is adequate to press the needle into the plastic record enough to play. If not, hit a surplus store, hardware store, or dollar store for a spring of suitable size.

Don't. Remove. The motor. The band inside that goes from the motor to the turntable is a huge pain in the a$$ to put back together. I used dental tools to reassemble it to the motor spindle. I just saw you pulled the motor. Ucchhhh...never do that. The band is eaily twisted, and that affects the sound and speed. Use a finer tool than a small screwdriver.

The word "teardown" means disassembly, not destruction, in repair contexts.
