One of my favorite pieces of trivia I love to share with friends is that Spider-man, in *two* distinct ways, directly led to the creation of Power Rangers. First, how the Toei Spider-man revived Sentai as Super Sentai (giving us the later seasons that would become Power Rangers). And second, it led to Stan Lee trying to adapt Sun Vulcan, which led to Margaret Loesch pitching it (and making her a fan in the process). So when Haim Saban pitched her Power Rangers, she was probably the only television executive in America who already believed Super Sentai could work! All thanks to Spidey!

Stan was a man ahead of it's time, Mad Respect to him. About Sun Vulcan is a product of it's time, cheesy fights, cheesy dialogues and plot but not boring at all, is very spy themed... kinda and the best part I think is the atmosphere, some episodes, specially in the early episodes, have a very slow paste and sometimes it feels very similar to a horror movie which might it be because the show has an impressive death tool, probably one of my favorite episodes is Episode 9 in which a boy discovers that her father was replaced by a robot that ended up chasing him near the end with his robot face revealed, straight out of a slasher movie.

The irony here is the Power Ranger franchise was bought by Disney a two decades ago before being bought back to Saban, but this was before the former bought Marvel. This episode was an absolute treat as I have a similar story to Dan's. I didn't live in Japan but for several years in the early 80s, I lived in Hawaii and was lucky enough to get to watch Battle Fever J on KIKU-TV every afternoon. The great thing was that KIKU subtitled the episodes in house, so I got to actually get what they were talking about (although the dialog often passed the subtitles and the actual syntax was sometimes weird). Hawaii also had plenty of Japanese toys on the shelves and at the local swap meets, so I was playing with die cast robots and even a couple of figures from Space Adventure Cobra back in the day. When we moved back to the mainland, I asked some other kids what channel Battle Fever J was on and they had no idea what I was talking about. When I described the show, they thought I was crazy. 10 years later, I'm a senior in high school and Power Rangers becomes the biggest thing in the world. I like to think I was ahead of the curve. Sentai shows absolutely would have been a hit back then and it's a shame those TV execs just didn't get it.

Yep true, and fast forward to today, we're watching TV dramas from South Korea and Taiwan on streaming. If you asked anyone that aren't Asian-American (or immigrant of East and Southeast Asians decent) in the 90's and early 2000's if Korean and TV dramas from East Asia would become popular, they would've thought it would've been impossible for a subtitled no English dub foreign TV dramas would find mass popularity in the US, but look where we are today. We got K-pop (like BTS, Blackpink) and K-drama becoming a big thing in the USA. It does leave me baffling, how did K-drama (and Taiwanese dramas) can become popular in the US but tokusatsu don't get the same love that Korean dramas get in the US. I know one blogger who wrote that several fantasy/sci-fi K-dramas and fantasy and Wuxia shows from China would fit the Tokusatsu genre: akizukiorientaldramamovie.blogspot.com/2014/01/should-fans-of-also-consider-wuxia.html akizukiorientaldramamovie.blogspot.com/2018/01/mind-hurts-why-do-i-even-call-certain.html

It even had all the awesome Japanese commercials. I watched that thing so many times I almost wore it out. We were talking about the show (because I had lots of questions) and both agreed that it was too violent and weird to find its way to an American audience. That was 1990. @@andrejg4136 well, its still a problem. Is it a giantess fetish? I could be down with that. Or is it a robot fetish? That one is.... well, less appealing somehow. Think about it. Company invents realistic robot babes. Men rejoice. Company advertises version 2 with 'all new advanced AI! With this update your Robang Buddy will be able to speak, have opinions and needs, and make pillow talk after the deed!' *Guys:* You ruined it.

Finally, an episode on Sun Vulcan! I’ve been curious about it since you bring it up often. It’s a very atypical season, specially for an adult looking back at it 40 years after it was created and who’s watched a smattering of more modern Sentai and Rangers. I have to keep watching it since I only watched the first episode.

In the original Battle Fever J, the lone female character was named Miss America; she was played by the same actress who played Peggy Matsuyama- Gorenger Pink 4- on Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (The Star Rangers in the Philippines).

Super Sentai is an amazing and fun franchise! It's too bad the Marvel deal didn't shape up to be something bigger in the USA. I'd love some Battle Fever J comic books! Also, it's sad that Toei cracked down on the fansub community recently. I just hope Shout! or someone else releases official English subtitled DVDs and BDs of the seasons we don't yet have.

Thank you for this video! I've been a fan of Super Sentai ever since I was a child, watching random episodes of different series on betamax. Have fond memories of watching the same episodes of Google V, Dynaman, Bioman, Flashman, and Changeman over and over. And just wow, though I was aware of the past partnership between Super Sentai and Marvel, I never knew about Sun Vulcan potentially being brought over to the West. Also crazy to hear the someone who tried to bring it over back then (Margaret Loesch) would also be involved with Power Rangers later on.

I was a very small kid in Japan in the early 1980s, and while I don't remember the details, whenever I hear that distinctive CLAANG sound of the vehicles joining together to form the giant robot...omg a tidal wave of nostalgia hits and I'm a little kid again reliving the magic I saw on the TV screen with these clunky superhero shows. Life was amazing.
