One of my favorite pieces of trivia I love to share with friends is that Spider-man, in *two* distinct ways, directly led to the creation of Power Rangers. First, how the Toei Spider-man revived Sentai as Super Sentai (giving us the later seasons that would become Power Rangers). And second, it led to Stan Lee trying to adapt Sun Vulcan, which led to Margaret Loesch pitching it (and making her a fan in the process). So when Haim Saban pitched her Power Rangers, she was probably the only television executive in America who already believed Super Sentai could work! All thanks to Spidey!

Marvel also had a hand in creating Battle Fever J, which also added giant robots to Sentai making it SUPER SENTAI (Gorenger and JAKQ were not considered "super" until Ohranger?), so we might have a whole different medium today if it weren't for those two shows :P

Stan was a man ahead of it's time, Mad Respect to him. About Sun Vulcan is a product of it's time, cheesy fights, cheesy dialogues and plot but not boring at all, is very spy themed... kinda and the best part I think is the atmosphere, some episodes, specially in the early episodes, have a very slow paste and sometimes it feels very similar to a horror movie which might it be because the show has an impressive death tool, probably one of my favorite episodes is Episode 9 in which a boy discovers that her father was replaced by a robot that ended up chasing him near the end with his robot face revealed, straight out of a slasher movie.

The irony here is the Power Ranger franchise was bought by Disney a two decades ago before being bought back to Saban, but this was before the former bought Marvel. So, in another timeline, Sun Vulcan characters not even could have appeared in that cameo in Power Rangers, but also there's the chance the latter could be part of the MCU. It's mindblowing if you think about it.

Remember that Marvel went bankrupt. Marvel didn't become the money making entity it is until AFTER disney bought it. Also, comics were looked at with a stigma, as trashy pulp. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that TV execs wouldn't take a chance on a eccentric comic book guy's idea.

@@ta0paipai Hard to believe that comics were repulsive, Considering that it's still highly popular and well-known 1980's even after Marvel's temporarily bankrupt, As it's faired better unlike nowadays with all the woke pandering nonsense writing going on. The only ones who are eccentric are those TV-executives, Because they're not so bright after all. And are probably the same people that almost tried to reject Super Sentai adaptation the second time when Saban brought it up for MMPR.
@ta0paipai

@@traingrainz6148 Comicbook popularity has had its ups and downs and were "repulsive" to both the American Government (via a congressional investigation) and conservative parent groups. Since eccentric means "a person of unconventional and slightly strange views or behavior" (and has nothing to do with not being bright) that fits Stan Lee. The TV executives are better described as conservative and status quo (as in not wanting to take a chance).

This episode was an absolute treat as I have a similar story to Dan's. I didn't live in Japan but for several years in the early 80s, I lived in Hawaii and was lucky enough to get to watch Battle Fever J on KIKU-TV every afternoon. The great thing was that KIKU subtitled the episodes in house, so I got to actually get what they were talking about (although the dialog often passed the subtitles and the actual syntax was sometimes weird). Hawaii also had plenty of Japanese toys on the shelves and at the local swap meets, so I was playing with die cast robots and even a couple of figures from Space Adventure Cobra back in the day. When we moved back to the mainland, I asked some other kids what channel Battle Fever J was on and they had no idea what I was talking about. When I described the show, they thought I was crazy. 10 years later, I'm a senior in high school and Power Rangers becomes the biggest thing in the world. I like to think I was ahead of the curve. Sentai shows absolutely would have been a hit back then and it's a shame those TV execs just didn't get it.

Yep true, and fast forward to today, we're watching TV dramas from South Korea and Taiwan on streaming. If you asked anyone that aren't Asian-American (or immigrant of East and Southeast Asians decent) in the 90's and early 2000's if Korean and TV dramas from East Asia would become popular, they would've thought it would've been impossible for a subtitled no English dub foreign TV dramas would find mass popularity in the US, but look where we are today. We got K-pop (like BTS, Blackpink) and K-drama becoming a big thing in the USA. It does leave me baffling, how did K-drama (and Taiwanese dramas) can become popular in the US but tokusatsu don't get the same love that Korean dramas get in the US. I know one blogger who wrote that several fantasy/sci-fi K-dramas and fantasy and Wuxia shows from China would fit the Tokusatsu genre: akizukiorientaldramamovie.blogspot.com/2014/01/should-fans-of-also-consider-wuxia.html akizukiorientaldramamovie.blogspot.com/2018/01/mind-hurts-why-do-i-even-call-certain.html

@@mdo7 I had a friend in high school that was from Japan but was ethnically Korean and even though he didn't speak Korean and was born in Japan and raised Japanese, he was considered a foreigner by the Japanese govt and had to "renew" his citizenship every year. So he'd spend summers in Japan and come back with tapes of the shows he liked to watch. One of these tapes was DragonBall Z. He let me borrow it and I dubbed it. It even had all the awesome Japanese commercials. I watched that thing so many times I almost wore it out. We were talking about the show (because I had lots of questions) and both agreed that it was too violent and weird to find its way to an American audience. That was 1990. Fast forward 10 years, it's the biggest animated show in the world.

@@kirkmoon5810 That's nice and all, but there is something that's bother me Kirk. It really bother me that toku shows in the west don't get the same love or a growing fandom like their K-drama (and Taiwanese dramas) counterpart are getting in the US. I never seen any toku fans helping K-drama fans branching out or overlapping K-dramas to tokusatsu. I mean I never seen toku fans bringing up K-drama (or wuxia/kung-fu drama) on their discussion circle or online forum. I never seen any toku fans making any attempt to reach out to K-drama fandom or helping them discover toku shows. Kirk, does that bother you that despite K-dramas and Taiwanese dramas gained popularity in the US, but toku doesn't get that same type of fandom growth like K-drama and Taiwanese dramas get.

Love the story! Very much how it was when we returned from our six year tour in Okinawa, returning in 1992! I recall telling people about Dragon Ball (and Z) and Super Sentai and got quizzical looks. How ironic that 2 years later they would be all over the place, on Television and in malls, and I sat back with my original content (manga, cards, toys) and grinned ear to ear. It's hard to express to people who haven't experienced it how odd it is to both be happy people get to experience it but also remember "how it used to be", not speaking the language but somehow falling for the content. What a great story that reminded me of that magical time.

My first exposure to Super Sentai was the Dynaman that aired on the USA channel's cartoon express. It blew my mind, and I missed it when it disappeared. Then years later, there was MMPR, which since the internet wasn't around yet, a show I thought was an Americanized version of the concept.
@jerelminter

They're from the same series, MMPR was based on the Zyuranger Sentai that was currently airing in Japan at the time. It was only 5 years after Dynaman.

@@maskedriderweaver4122 Oh yeah, you couldn't look up Sentai on the internet back then. You had to know somebody who knew it from Japan, or lived or saw it there yourself. Otherwise the only thing you would've seen was Power Rangers, or the Dyaman parody dub like you said (because those were the only things that existed of it). You also had Voltron, which is basically an animated version of the two.
