I know animation fans like myself are supposed to hate Filmation, but I just can't do it. They're plucky & wily, and they got screwed by L'Oreal in a blatantly illegal buyout. I especially like their animated Ghost Busters cuz it's just so... WEIRD. Magical girl transformations, cartoon pig-bats, Peter Cullen doing a wacky coward character, people from the future all being purple... it kinda feels like a fever dream. So it kinda feels fitting that the VHS thing happened (which I never heard of till now), cuz how many times has a dream gone into that territory? Yeah. I genuinely love it just cuz it's so different.

As a kid in 1986, when this cartoon premiered via a Boston cable affiliate, I remember being horribly disappointed, thinking, "What the hell is this? This is NOT Ghostbusters." Having no background in the 1975 live-action show, of course I was confused. Nobody ever explained it, and I was left with the impression that this Filmation cartoon was just an insipid knockoff of the beloved 1984 movie that I knew so well. I'm certain I was not alone. I agree if they had put the original show out before launching the new show, they might build up an audience. They would gotten the show on the air immediately given it was already made. What's interesting is The Real Ghostbusters actually took a slap at Filmation's Ghostbusters. In the episode, Janine is dating a guy who covertly steal Egon Spengler's ghostbusting tech. Producing a robotic version of the dematerializer, he almost puts the Real Ghostbusters out of business. Until something goes awry, with Egon insisting ghosts have to be 'contained' instead of being dematerialized. Though nobody really made the connection, I thought this was really brazen of Columbia and DIC.

It’s the 1980’s and with several different cable companies around, literally going one town over could reveal channels you didn’t get at home or your favorite shows coming on at different times. I’m spending the weekend at my older brother’s place and playing different games with my nephew (who was more like my little brother). I decided I wanted to play Ghostbusters, and he says “Okay, who gets to be the gorilla?” I look at him like he’s crazy and say “There’s no gorillas in Ghostbusters.” And after about a half hour of me trying to teach him how to be Egon to my Ray, we gave up. Later that afternoon we’re watching cartoons on WGN out of Chicago (which was pretty cool in the little river town I grew up in.) and for the first time I see the adventures of Jake, Eddie, and Tracy the ape. After finding it on WGN back at my house I watched both shows, but the aforementioned didn’t last as long and I forgot about it for years.

Its noteworthy to mention the Real Ghostbusters was brilliant, and biting. If it was just disposable junk, despite being linked to a movie (which wasnt unusual...think how Robocop, a hard R movie, had a cartoon), it would have been forgotten quickly also. You had scary and insightful episodes, including Night Game, Samhaim/Halloween, Boogeyman, and others. It only got killed when it became too silly with Slimer taking over and poorer animation.

I personally LOVED the "Lets Go Ghostbusters " cheer the team would do and their Mega high five they would do. I remember watching this when it was briefly available on Netflix. One, there was one alright episode out of the huge batch I watched (it was summer and college was out). "Being "first" doesn't always mean being best, especially if you don't have anything interesting to say after that... " This should be pinned to the top of every comment section everywhere. Thank you, Mr. Larson for this long-overdue public service announcement. (Even if half the viewers of this video don't pick up on the true meaning here, know that this old man is giving you a bow and long, slow round of applause.) Bravo!

The Ghost Busters cartoon was much safer to view when aired on TV because the Real Ghostbusters had some truly nightmare inducing visuals and stories: Boogeyman to name one.

I remember not being fooled by the competing Ghostbusters shows, and preferring the movie tie-in show (mostly because, as the video points out, I had no idea the '70s live-action show existed). My brother liked both shows, however, because each one had an interesting company car; having a showy enough vehicle on your program was enough to keep that five-year-old's attention.

I remember when the cartoon came out, and I wasn’t angry, thinking, “Ok, something completely different. Let’s have a look.” I wasn’t disappointed with the concept - really liked Tracy- but it really felt juvenile. I was only watching “The Real Ghostbusters” every once in a while. But thanks to KZbin, I’ve had fun occasionally dipping into the old live action just for its silliness.

I do remember seeing a VHS of the live action The Ghostbusters in Blockbuster once. I can't remember if I already knew about it after the cartoon version came out or not, but I remember looking at the pictures on the box and thinking how cheesy it looked.

Fun Fact: The IDW Ghostbusters comics have a couple of references to Filmation's Ghost Busters. In Ghostbusters: Get Real Issue #2, we see a zoo gorilla that looks quite like Tracy from the cartoons. Later on in the comic, there are multiple portals that feature different GB incarnations including the cast of the Filmation's cartoon as well as several parodies, like the the Penguin-Hunters from the anime Tokyo ESP & the Ghost Wrestlers from Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling.

I wasn't allowed to watch the 1984 Ghostbusters in the cinema, so when the Filmation Ghostbusters cartoon came out, I initially wasn't confused and enjoyed the cartoon. But then, when The Real Ghostbusters cartoon came out, I was confused. I liked and watched both, though I have to admit I preferred the Filmation Ghostbusters. I only saw the Filmation Ghostbusters toys twice in my life, once in a store in Italy as a kid and then at a German toy show this year, where I was surprised that there were other people who'd heard of this weird Ghostbusters cartoon that had a gorilla and was not based on the movie.

Oh yeah, us kids in Germany had a great Saturday morning cartoon channel called Tele5. I remember watching Filmation’s Ghostbusters vs The “Real” Ghostbusters and being kind of confused. But I was even more confused when I eventually got to see one of the live action movies and none of the characters looked anything remotely like the ones in the cartoon series, except for Slimer maybe. (Egon was not blond! Peter didn’t have as cool a haircut as his animated version…).

Same. Plus Filmation did come out with some good shows at the time.

@@Roboto-chan_1402 Tele5? I've watched cartoons on various German satellite TV channels (RTL Plus, RTL2, Sat1, Pro7) in the nineties, but I haven't heard about a channel like this...
@Roboto-chan_140226 күн бұрын
@@negirno I’m sorry you missed it being on air. It was a cable channel in the 1980s. I think it even made a comeback in the noughties, but I am unsure if it lasted. It was of course not exclusive an animated series channel, but Saturday mornings were jam packed with all sorts of anime and American cartoons.

how long did it take until they started showing this movie on tv ?.this was before my time but i know that even in the 90s it would take years so probably even longer in the 80s . certainly more than 2.

I didn't have any trouble understanding that they were in fact two cartoons with the same premise, after all, we had already have Transformers/Gobots. The name was the same, but the fact that one was "the real" and the other one, not, I assumed that the Filamation one was the "chinese version" of it.

I was one of those kids who was wondering what the hell was going on. The biggest mistake of Filmmation’s Ghostbusters was it was too goofy, whereas the Real Ghostbusters at least kept some of the scariness of the movie (for what 80s kids tv allowed). Anyway, I missed the porn tape.
