She-Ra: Princess of Power is an American animated series produced in 1985 by Filmation. A spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, She-Ra: Princess of Power was aimed primarily at a young female audience to complement He-Man's popularity with young males.
At the time He-Man was still reaching a mostly male audience and Filmation and Mattel decided to target a whole new audience by creating She-Ra: Princess of Power.
Did it work? Depends on who you ask.

The Horde is the best! The _Masters of the Universe: Origins_ Horde figures have been amazing so far. Mosquitor is great, with the same blood sucking action as the original, Leech comes with swappable hands and head with suction cup versions, but Mantenna is _absolutely badass._ The figure actually has _four full legs_ with independent hip joints for each, unlike the original '80s version that just had two legs with a groove in each to make them kinda look like four skinny little legs. I can't wait for more Horde figures from the _Origins_ line... and I am _really seriously hoping_ that they make a Modulok _Origins_ figure! Just _imagine_ what they could do with Modulok using contemporary toy engineering techniques!

At a Fan convention Melendy Britt tells a story of a being contacted by a mother who's young daughter was apparently molested. The daughter said she would only tell her hero She-RA who hurt her, They had Melendy Britt talk to the little girl on a telephone in the voice of She-RA, and the little girl did tell her who did it. The person was arrested. (Mass applause by the audience). The story is on youtube.

As a young boy in the 80's, I was already a huge fan of Transformers and He-Man, but remember enthusiastically hunting down the She-Ra movie at the video store (we didn't get She-Ra on tv where I grew up), and not once did I consider it a product just for girls. Adora, legitimately, has the only flushed out story of any character in MotU, and in the comics (more recent DC run) it makes it even more relatable. Her story is actually REALLY inspiring, and a story of guilt and redemption most of us can relate to.

Oddly enough, Queen Marlena (Adam & Adora's mother) also has a really interesting backstory, but it was only brought up a couple times. I got into He-Man and She-Ra with the reboots. Obviously, they’re a product of their time, but they’re still fun and enjoyable stories. I see why they became such huge hits in their day: imaginative stories, with fun characters and a world kids wanted to be the hero or heroine in. I hope we get more He-Man and She-Ra in the future. After the recent reboots, they have potential of being sort of like TMNT, where every generation has its own version they can love or check out.

I think the decline in MOTU had less to do with She-Ra and more to do with ThunderCats. Both TCats and She-Ra made their cartoon debut in the fall of 1985 and TCats was arguably the breakout hit of that season. It really did not help that ThunderCats was a similar magic/sci-fi hybrid like MOTU down to the male lead (Lion-O) possessing a magic sword. As far as the toys I pretty much only had the MOTU figures as a child. But the She-Ra cartoon was awesome and IMO not a huge problem for boys to get into. Adora/She-Ra was a great heroine to follow and Filmation’s background art was always a delight from the colorful Whispering Woods to the mechanized and dark Fright Zone. I also enjoyed many of the supporting characters, particularly Madame Razz and Broom.

Yeah, the hand-off confused me as a kid, too. My neighbor got the toys and we were super excited to combine our figures in play, but her figures were so much smaller and out of scale with mine. The cloth and doll hair was strange to me and meant you couldn't play in the sand, dirt, mud, water, etc like I did with my MOTU figures. And the mini comics were also super different... the MOTU stuff was comic styled with gritty and near mature storytelling... while POP was more storybook influenced with pastel colors and more childish stories.
@Belgand
@Belgand Жыл бұрын
Really? Even as a kid I'd never even think to take my figures out into sand or mud. It would not only get them all dirty but it would gunk up the joints and such. The only toys that went outside were specifically designed for it, let alone in the sandbox. That was reserved for sand-specific toys and the occasional Tonka truck, because that was back when they were made of steel, practically indestructible, and they had some explicit sand/dirt moving play features.

I wouldn't necessarily say that She-Ra was what killed He-Man. There's a sizeable article on what exactly happened on a site called flyingmoose. But the situation can't be summed up in one sentence. It was multiple factors that did the MOTU franchise in. Part of it was its own success, like you said. It became a TV series, a toy line, a comic series and even had its name on lunchboxes. But other shows like Transformers and G.I. Joe came in and did the same thing, siphoning sales away from the MOTU line. Basically they saw what the MOTU line did and thought that idea was just DANDY, and did it themselves. Eventually, L'Oreal bought Filmation and hastily shuttered the company, terminating the entire staff (I believe a day or two before legislation would pass requiring companies to give 60 days' notice before a mass termination). One of the animators mentioned they pretty much just walked in and said, 'Put down your pencils and get out'. And that was the end of it.

So my parents got me Voltron and the castle during the July 1985 toy sales and I was into Transformers by the time I got them for Christmas. I think you can see the trend. Then I got into She-Ra, my mom let me buy She-Ra because that was He-Man’s twin sister. And I already had He-Man. Got Glimmer and a fashion too, but it wasn’t to long before I discovered Jem and all other shows were over for me. That family connection is what led this boy to being able to buying the She-Ra doll. It didn’t bother me that they weren’t more like Teela, what bothered me was that Teela never had hair play or removable fashions pieces. Who I didn’t like was Bow, because he was not made like my He-Man figures. That was the only consistency issue that was upsetting to me. 😂 I can’t remember which aisle the She-Ra dolls were in, maybe there was a split display, so I knew they existed, because I wasn’t going down the girls’ aisle on a regular basis, at that time. I was never uncomfortable in the girls aisle, I was just worried about running into someone from school while there. Or making it to the register and out the door with my girls, aisle purchases. At least once I had to be stealthy getting my Jem doll to the check out without a girl from school seeing me. The She-Ra dolls I had ended up being traded for Shana of the Holograms.

Born in Sweden in 1984, I was only vaguely aware of He-Man in the early 90's (as other kids my age watched it), and as far as I know we didn't even get a release of She-Ra. That said, I loved She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which really went far above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect from a reboot of an 80's toy commercial, and I find the history behind the crafting of those old shows to be absolutely fascinating. Both of the new He-Man shows have been solid, too.

Now with the licensing mess, we might not get to see She-Ra and He-Man shared universe and team-ups for a while.

Great job on this video. She-ra is certainly an essential element in the history of He-man! I like her design a lot and she has some very cool villains. Your channel is always a delight. The modern She-ra series is pretty good. It had a few inconsistencies sometimes but was definitely an entertaining series from start to finish!

Something that always baffles me about MotU is the stories I hear on how integral the cartoon was to the success of the toys in the US. In Germany the cartoon played almost no part in the toyline's popularity. It didn't even properly air until the line was discontinued. There were only a few select episodes on VHS. Amazing that it was so popular that it spawned PoP.

I gagged at the introduction of a bunch of girl dolls into the action figure market. Never got to see the movie as a kid, so I couldn't care less about the story. I do remember TV teaser commercials advertising The Evil Horde as new villains for He-Man, and that was super hyped! So when I found out the Horde was gonna be the main set of villains for She-Ra, I felt tricked and deceived. Total bait and switch. But nowadays, I would love a fantasy world big enough for the both of them, to give both sets of fans and consumers the opportunity to geek out.

I had/have several of the Horde figures, Mosquitor, Leech, Dragstor, Modulok, and a Mantenna that was given to me after a friend scraped the paint off of his eyes. They were all cool, they fit right in with my He-Man figures and added more storylines to my play, but when it came to She-Ra and her fellow heroes, they felt like they were a different toy line altogether. The play features were too different, and yeah, I'll say it, they felt like a girl's toys. I didn't think they were stupid or anything, just not for me. I dug the cartoon and wanted She-Ra and her side to be presented (if that's the right word) like Teela. She was a badass, able to hang with any of the male warriors from either side, and she didn't sacrifice her femininity in doing so. That's what I wanted from She-Ra, not a fashion doll whose hair I had to comb. Oh well, I wasn't the target audience.

While as an adult, I can clearly see how the cartoon could be seen as little more than an advert for the toys, but to say they had no entertainment value is nonsense. Although some stories would've really benefited from being cast over two episodes, especially the ones where Skeletor actually managed to get his hands on Grayskull (or transported it or He-Man himself to another dimension). I remember the sheer joy when He-Man/Skeletor or (wow!) both turned up in a She-Ra episode :D

I wouldn't say that She-Ra killed He-Man. I would say that He-Man was already dying by the time they decided it was a good idea to do a She-Ra, IF they wanted it to be more successful they probably should have tried it a couple of years earlier when He-Man was either at its peak or starting the downward slide....Not do it when He-Man already has one foot in the grave

It's not surprising to learn She-Ra was developed by women. It's the emphasis on the legs. You notice this especially in anime and manga made by women. If women want to make a women attractive, they're designs don't typically focus on the boobs or butt, they give her damn good legs. And She-Ra has a hell of a lot of legs, especially her Adora form.
@pacman5698

Same thing with the reboot. In Adora's last form in the series the short skirt is replaced by a waist skirt that's half open on the front and she wears spandex over her legs and doesn't even have boots but rather soles attached on the spandex pants. Also, you get to see how even more buff her arms have gotten.

A lot of the male and female character duos like this seem to be cousins, this puts He-man and She-ra in a special class since they're brother and sister. She-ra breaks many traditions and that's a big part of what makes her really inspiring. Her fighting spirit is also really cool. For an episode that's supposed to be about She-ra, you certainly talk a lot about Barbie. And She-ra was not a fashion doll, she was an action figure. I was born in 1981 and grew up loving She-ea and still do. He-man / Adam's action figure came with his Battle Cat/Gringer. But She-ra's / Adora's was sold separately from Swiftwind / Spirit.

Adora/She-Ra & friends were basically He-Man knock-offs of Barbie (all of the females, the titular character included) & Ken (for Bow's sake), hence the comb-able hair & alternative outfits. They weren't really meant to do battle with, because the cloth outfits could get torn & the ladies' hair could get severly tangled. This is why the newer versions of Adora/She-Ra & company are more in line with He-Man or WWE female wrestling figures (cue references to the MOTU & WWE crossover from a few years back) than they are the standard Barbie model of the past.
