In 1980 Nickel Plate Products offered a limited run of brass Union Pacific streamliner M 10000 the "City of Salina" in HO scale.
The model was offered by AHM and sold through train shops and brass train dealers. The original M 10000 was only three cars and a forth was added later. The model was of all four cars and came with a beautiful custom paint and and gold decal lettering.
The sets sell for about $500. on Ebay The original price was only a bit less than that meaning the model has not held its value well when adjusted for inflation.
Wikipedia:
The M-10000 was an early American streamlined passenger trainset that operated for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1934 until 1941. It was built by the Pullman Company, and was the first streamlined passenger train to be delivered in the United States, and the second to enter regular service after the Pioneer Zephyr of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.
The M-10000 car design built upon the efforts of William Bushnell Stout, a pioneer of all-metal construction for airplanes who adapted metal fuselage design to the Railplane (not to be confused with the Bennie Railplane), a lightweight self-propelled railcar built by Pullman-Standard in 1932. The tapered car cross-section, lightweight tubular aluminum space frame construction, and Duralumin skin of the Railplane were carried over into the M-10000 design. The streamlined body was developed from a series of wind tunnel tests that were carried out at the University of Michigan.
The M-10000 was a three-car train set, with a combined power/baggage/railway post office car and two trailing passenger coaches] The power car measured 71 feet 9 inches (21.87 m) long, followed by coaches measuring 58 feet (18 m) and a 71 feet (22 m). Including the space between cars, the train set had a total length of 204 feet 5 inches (62.31 m), with a width of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and a height of 11 feet 11.5 inches (3.645 m) at the cab; the coaches were 1 foot (0.30 m) shorter] The aluminum car bodies were constructed to a monocoque design without the structural frame typical of contemporary equipment, and the train set's total weight of 85 tons (85,000 kg) was about the same as a single passenger coach of the time.
The two passenger coaches each had a capacity of 60 people; the last coach also included a small galley at the rear end to prepare meals that were served at passengers' seats. The train was powered by a single 600 horsepower (450 kW) spark-ignited distillate engine built by Winton, a subsidiary of the Electro-Motive Corporation, driving a generator that powered two traction motors on the leading truck of the power car. A diesel engine had been originally specified, but a suitable model was not ready at the time of M-10000's construction.

I find it amazing how one piece, or pieces, lead to another. I normally just see the three rail version of the M-1000 and that "lumpy" toy like look they chose for this train. Seeing the HO with all the subtle details is nice, for a change. As always well done. Greg and Jeanne.

now you guys are truly major toy collectors extraordinaire. i appreciate your site, thanks, guys! you're a great couple such as George & Gracie! I was born the very same year as Athearn was: '47. When I six, dad gave me and my brother, David, a pair of dummy F2's in HO that I believe were painted with the B & O colors. This "toys in the attic" segment was a lot of fun (albeit without the hysteria and the plotting LOL)... again, thanks as I have enjoyed watching you both and listening to your great palaver for several years now. please have a happy, prosperous New Year... btw, will you take us back to the Chicago Museum of Science and spend some more quality time there? pretty please? Sounded like Ebay! I had to check my phone when I heard it... lol. Got me! Your lucky the foam didnt disintegrate and/or stain the model. Not that it matters now, but a plastic wrap is best to protect from the foam. The foam is also abrasive, so it can damage paint over time taking the model in and out. Nothing you dont already know. Lol. That old rubber on the diaphrams get pretty nasty over the years, no matter how its stored.

FYI. In the prototype M10000 only the lead truck was powered. This made it a B-2-2-2-2. The main lesson UP and other railroads learned from this train set was, it was very cumbersome to change the consist for increased or decreased demand. One literally had to disassemble the train to add a car. The only advantage articulation provided was lighter weight. The trainset was made out of aircraft grade aluminum. When WWII started the trainset became redundant due to a lack of capacity. However the aluminum was much in demand for aircraft. And the UP M10000 became a victim of the greater need for aluminum.

ian narita I wondered about the traction motors. Normally you would send power to all the trucks. But as the prime mover was totally gutless.... only worked because the whole train weighs the same as a Pullman car.

I love those old serials like Hurricane Express. They had it all. Wooden acting, paper thin story lines, hilarious dialog and car/train/airplane crashes by the ton. They sure got a lot of mileage out of the stock crash footage they had in those days.

The only surving trains like that are the flying Yankee which is on display at the hobo railroad in Lincoln NH, or the Burlington Zephyr which resides in a railroad museum in. Which musam i do not know. But i do know there is a grope trying to get the flying Yankee running agan.
