We are back to the Los Angeles Live Steamers to ride the trains and see the shops!
Last week we looked at the connections to Walt Disney who was an avid steam enthusiast and back yard railroader. Over time much of his railroad, the Carolwood Pacific Railroad, was moved here to LALS.
From their web site:
The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum (LALSRM) was founded in 1956. It was started by train enthusiasts for the purpose of educating people in railroad history and lore and also to further the avocation of live steam, gas-mechanical and electronic railroad technology.
We operate our 7½” gauge model trains for the general public to ride from 11 am - 3 pm every Sunday (weather permitting). We also have extensive layouts for 4¾”, 3½”, G, and #1 gauge model trains.
The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum survives solely on donations by railfans who visit and ride our trains (suggested donation $3.00). In keeping with our philosophy of giving back to our community, we also host special events for Children’s Hospital, The City of Hope, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Tri Valley Special Games and other organizations.

LOVE LOVE LOVE going here, but it's been awhile. My brother in law (Matt Mason) used to drive down here from Sacramento every year and we'd drive up (from Orange County) to visit for the day. I could ride those trains all day. I love the bridges - especially the one WAY out in back. It's been about 6 years since I've been there, so even though this video is older - it's good to see again! Thanks for the memories!

Alex O'D here - Was a pleasure hosting you guys and I'm so honored to have my work featured in one of your videos! Love the feature of my scratchbuilt 1" scale Chama coal tower and Santa Fe Alco DL-109 diesel. The last few years I've been leading the largest rehabilitation and expansion of our 1" scale track in our club's history - I'm so happy to see the scale thrive and continue to grow in popularity. Catching up on old videos you have made because I REALLY LOVE how you always give all the details about the places you visit. Next time you're out Denver way there is a fun train town called Tiny Town. It's address is Morrison, Colorado. But it is up Hwy 285. Probably the second range of mountains past the Hog Backs(the first little range of mountains ). 5 minutes into the mountains. Their website is down, but they say they are going to open in May. About 5 years ago when I visited they had just had a Mason Bogie Steam Engine built. Plus they have 4 or 5 other engines. Not nearly as big or grand as the LA Steamers but a fun place to screw around.

@@ToyManTelevision I know, the entire town of Sonoma is great. My father, just before he passed at 95, was in the convalescent hospital just yards to the north. Every 1/2 hr he got to watch the train as it went by...what a blast for him. So many memories of being there (Sonoma) and of traveling to Santa Rosa where him and Mom lived. I do suggest the "Ghost Train" at Halloween... It has been a popular attraction at the Live Steamers for over 20 years now. There was a plan to end it (for several reasons) and it was cancelled one year BUT it had become such an institution that it is not going anywhere... As to that "steam pump" looking thing --- I believe that is the control stand for the older of the two hydraulic lifts at the facility. --

It’s missing a Florida East Coast railway members in the different gauge’s too ! I’m not familiar with any except the ones here in Texas ! The last time I was their I visited the (“Florida Gold Coast Museum”) they did not have a ride on mini-train ! 😔 but that was years ago ! The only place that I know of in the state of Texas still has a park similar to that is one called Zube Park ! Galveston Railroad Museum,(“ we’re 17 railroads met at one time”), the Houston Railroad museum, (“ presently in Tomball”) and the one caboose in Katy !!! I know we have a dinner train north in Palestine Texas I believe but other than that it’s about all I can think of !

Toy Man Television I know the one you’re talking about it was the Southern Pacific’s (“Sunset Limited”) ! It left from either “Tallahassee, or Jacksonville, Florida” and it ended at ; I believe Los Angeles California ! Another famous named train ! (“The Sunset Limited”) Would have been one of my favorite trains to ride because of the fact that it hits the three major states that I have family in Florida Texas and California ! Too bad it’s still not around anymore ! A few years ago ‘before hurricane Ike’ we had a Galveston Limited named the (“Yellow Rose of Texas”) !!! It would depart from Houston, arrive in Galveston, am then back to Houston and so on and so forth on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays !!! It was run by the Galveston Railroad Museum ! All kinds of People would bring their bicycles and put them in the “baggage car” and get off at the rear of the building of the Galveston Railroad Museum on the strand of Galveston !!! It’s really worth it to come down during spring or fall to enjoy that type of weather down here because once winter hits, it’s bad ! State of Texas has some really crazy and weird weather !!! At 4:01 from what I see is probably 2 devices. It is hard to distinguish because there is something on the track immediately behind it. The large bulbous thing on the large diameter pipe on the left looks like a vacuum breaker which is a backflow preventer in a water line. To the right of that is a 1/2 , 3/4 or 1 inch pipe with a muffler and a valve from a service station for the hoist to raise a vehicle to work on the vehicle. The track section just showing in the lower right of the frame is lower than the other tracks and lower than the track of the turntable because it is built on top of the hoist piston to be able to unload and load equipment from trucks and trailers of varying heights to the railroad . In the '50's and '60's hoists from old service stations were readily available and fairly inexpensive to buy. They are almost infinitely adjustable which is good for this use.

Nowadays it is a park sized miniature passenger train, The place has changed since I was there last more of the cabeese are now closed to the public for so-called safety reasons, But I feel they should allow people to walk through the cabeese, and Passenger Equipment because the would show what accommodations were like way back before Amtrak Took over. Ed is working on a video of the mostly finished Big Boy! He is posting to Facebook and KZbin in about a week. We will co release a video then. Locomotive is almost running again. Still a lot to be done. Once the boiler testing is finished and the locomotive is working and tested, then jacketing an paint and final testing on the mainline anyway soon. Waiting for Ed’s video in a week or so. Don’t know. But soon!!

Do the diesel engines have traction motors? Or are they shaft driven?
@ToyManTelevision

Mike Lcml5c hi. Hydraulic system. Almost like traction but a hydraulic pump on the engine and small hydraulic motors on the axles

Like Toy Man said, they're hydraulic or hydrostatic actually. A lot of forklifts and road equipment use this system because it's very efficient and very configurable, plus the hydraulic motors can be tiny and yet produce an incredible amount of torque and you can control multiple motors with a single hand valve that is coupled to the 'pump' on the drive engine. The pump is basically a swash-plate driving multiple lateral pistons inside a cast iron or steel case, to pressurize the system. By controlling the angle of the swash-plate, you control the volume of oil circulated and the speed and direction of the hydraulic motors. They generally use a hydraulic 'accumulator' to smooth out the pulses of the pump and absorb pressure spikes that may occur when throttling up the driven motors.😉 (I used to work on forklift transmissions, so I know all this stuff, LOL!)😁
