I am from Australia and I remember 50 years ago my Father would take me the the Model Engineers Club in I think it was Goodwood. The level of skill to build these beautiful locomotive totally amazed me and it still totally amazes me today. I am now 68. It is truly wonderful to see people that have the patients and skills to build these .

Anybody out there with GTW U-3-b's or U-4-a's (Northern's)? Shoot! I'll settle for their Pacifics, Mikado's or Mountains...anything you got that's GTW I'd LOVE to see. Also, is there anything on KZbin, (or anywhere else), that shows how these magnificent down-scaled machines are built?

Why do they cover the smoke box?

I can't say for sure, but steam locomotives will pass quite a bit of wet steam when first fired up and they end up spewing the wet steam and water up and out of the stack. Mix it with the soot that builds up in the smokebox and the stuff comes out pretty nasty. They may just have the rags up there to catch most of that so is does not stain their smokeboxes.

The water is acidic and it will stain/rust the smoke box over time. The rags are there to catch the water on the first move under steam

Not all of us are obsessed with being prototypical on every action taken. The water that shoots out the stack when its being moved out of the bays is acidic and would discolor the smoke box. It’s covered to prevent that.

It was thrown by me for him. There is another throw at the switch that connects to that stand.
