I used the JBL’s you suggested in the front and what a major difference! I thought the system sounded good the way I bought it until I put them in and my mind is blown… and the best part was the 20 minute install. So simple. Your video gave me the confidence to do the install and it was easy. Thanks!

I did a lot of research on how to get the best sound quality when replacing the rav4's speakers while not adding an amplifier or replacing the head unit. The best options are actually the Kicker DSC3504 and 6504, because they are rated to the same impedance level as the OEM speakers (4 ohms). The JBLs are 3 ohms and can suffer distortion issues because of it. The Kicker DSCs are also rated to work at 10 watts RMS or below, which is important for avoiding distortion from an underpowered head unit. I was not able to find any other quality 4 ohm speaker rated to work with such low power requirements. If you are only replacing the front speakers you'll need to reverse the polarity, but if you do all of them then it won't matter. Unfortunately the head unit itself is a major bottleneck for sound quality, not only because of it's low power output but because it's been factory EQ'd to work with the OEM speakers. Adjusting the EQ (lowering the highs, raising the mids and lows) helps but it will not sound as good as a flat signal coming from a third party head unit.

Where did you find the information about the power rating (10 watts RMS)? 😃 Tried to research this comment but I found the kicker DSC 6504's handle 60-240 watts which is more than the 10 watt you mention. The smaller 3504's handle 4-20 watts which would work. Not an expert so feel free to correct me, also not sure how to find out the specific wattage needed

Crutchfield told me that JBL have conducted extensive research on their 3ohm speakers and they work fine with a minimum 4 ohm-rated head unit - Crutchfield said that they get asked about this all of the time.

I went to my local car radio place to check out the polarity. Reverse polarity does not impede music for the most part and my ears couldn't really tell apart the difference. But I think your music will sound better if you don't mix up the positive and negative wires. For my 2019 LE Rav4 gas, the shop found the wiring diagram the denotes positive and negative. * please note this is based on 2019 RAV4 LE gas model. I have no idea if wiring changes from model to model or year to year for the Rav4. There are plenty of car radio places to double check if you're not sure. usually they don't charge very much for this work if you unscrew everything for them to inspect *** Driver side front dash 3.5 speakers: -Lavender/Black wire is positive + -Lavender/Red wire is negative - Passenger side front dash 3.5 speakers: -Lavender/Light Green is positive+ -Lavender/Blue is negative - The fix for reverse polarity is quite simple. Just criss-cross the 2 wires from the red wolf wiring harness. 1. Take the RED WOLF wire harness 2. There should be a Red and Silver wire. Red is positive and Silver is negative. 3. Use pair of scissors or wire cutter to cut the Red and Silver wire on the wiring harness. (DO NOT CUT THE WIRING COMING OUT OF THE VEHICLE. MUCH EASIER TO CUT THE WIRING HARNESS FROM RED WOLF) 4. strip back the insulation to reveal metal strands 5. Connect red wire to silver wire. and vice versa to connect silver wire to red wire. you can twist the wires together from and tape it up using electrical tape. Or you can use wire quick connectors to connect. 6. Done! you can double check your work by tracing the new 3.5 speaker's positive side to the positive side wire coming from the car. New speakers usually have a larger connector (positive) and a smaller connector (negative). * PS. another way you can check if you have reverse polarity (hooking up positive to negative and vice versa) is to take a look at your red wolf wiring harness (the large plastic end). And to take a look at the OEM speaker connection end. They both have a 4 pin connector set up. The red wolf wiring harness has Positive red wires on the end without plastic clip and negative black wires on the end with plastic clip. (The end with plastic clip is the part of the connector that has the little opening that secures the connector. you have to push this end to release the connection.) Now look at the OEM cheap plastic Toyota speakers you've removed, It also has that 4 pin connector identical to red wolf harness. The positive end is most likely the side with capacitor on the plastic clip opening side. If this is the positive side on the OEM, then the red wolf harness has red positive wires on the other end, thus causing reverse polarity. So not exactly plug and play anymore. ** Let me know if anyone has questions.

This is a great video and helped me a lot of installation itself. But there are so many things missing here: - These speakers have a rms rating of 55w rms while the facory headunit probably provides 10w or so. I personally put in a sony xav 5500 head unit on my old rav4 that I bought used. It still only provides 15 or 18 w rms. You absolutely need an amp for these speakers no doubt otherwise they will distort at high volumes. - The dash speakers get the same exact signal as the front door speakers. It will try to play bass notes its not capable of. Its very important that you buy a bass blocker for them. I am still trying to find the right frequency rating for these bass blocker but for now I have 300hz ones running in. I might try higher ones at some point but I don't think you want to put in 2800hz ones as they will make these more like tweeters.

Watching you cut the factory speaker was painful. Spend the $20 for the adapters. Drill out those rivets, insert rivnuts and use bolts on new adaper. Also use foam rings to channel sound into car. Sound deadner would help a lot too. And of course an amp. You will need something like a kicker key LOC to make your signal flat to the amps.

You didn't reverse the polarity on the speakers (since the Rav4's polarity is reversed). Check the polarity of the signal coming from the head unit with a multimeter. This would probably help your bass response as your speakers are excursioning the wrong way (also will prematurely wears out your speakers).

@Filmlove
@Filmlove Жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes they had to be cut since the factory speakers use rivets instead of screws. By leaving what was left of the speaker housing on the door, I only had to drill the new JBL (or any brand you like) into the speaker housing, and not have to drill into the door itself. To repeat, don’t drill into the door, you don’t want any screws to punch through outside lol

Hey, yeah personally I wasn’t fully impressed with the sound from the Club3020 which I why I landed on the GX302 for myself. Additional potential issue: I read thru some comments about reverse polarity on many RAV4 models, especially when using the RedWolf harness. After looking at my setup, the speaker incursion is correct for me, but on a few online threads there is discussion about having to solder the redwolf cables in opposite polarities to “correct” the reverse polarity in some Toyota models. For reference, I have a 2020 RAV4, non-JBL system trim. There however is no set consensus on which exact models after I scoured the RAV4 online discussions and RedWolf product page on Amazon

Replacing factory speakers is not an upgrade (especially comparing them with anything after market really tells us nothing about nothing - of course after market speakers will be fancier/"more potent", etc.). Potentially higher maximum output and more treble from the after market speakers is not an upgrade. Cutting out/destroying factory speaker membrane (or whatever other speaker was previously placed in factory speaker location) just to screw on the after market speaker is not an upgrade. Simply drilling a hole in the factory plastic speaker baffle to pass through the cable for the new speaker is not an upgrade. The only true upgrade was subwoofer addition to the system.
