For the “mesh backing” to fill in the holes, I just used aluminum foil from my kitchen. Worked just fine

customcargrills hey so I just realized that my grille is different, it’s a 2002 do you know any other videos that show how to do it for a 2002 grille?

I don't know of any videos that show a 99-02 grille specifically. As a general rule it's cheaper, quicker, & easier to use the 96-98 as a grille frame, even if you have a 99-02 model. A 99-02 install could be possible but you'll be spending a lot more time doing body work and repairing the stock grille than the 96-98 model. I could make a video for that style grille, but I think most owners are better off using the 96-98 frame to begin with as a whole.

As of January of 2023, we've been unable to ship to the UK due to new rules with HMRC and collecting VAT. For a while we were able to workaround this by selling through eBay but even eBay as of this year has been unable to straighten out the HMRC / VAT problem and is phasing out shipments there. As of the time of this reply, we can't facilitate a transaction to the UK. We would like to ship there, and hopefully one day in the future we will be able to resume shipments to the UK but as of today we cannot.

Pliogrip is the cheap alternative to other plastic repair materials. You could use regular Bondo brand filler but it'll likely crack down the road since it's a fairly large repair area.

The do-it-yourself mesh piece starts at $49, not $200. Even with lettering or emblems it's less than $100

What kind of mesh backing did you use?

It was just a scrap piece of the "HD Small Diamond" mesh that we stock. Nowadays I don't use the mesh backer on this specific install. I just use some tape as a backer and then remove the tape after the filler is cured.

How difficult would this be to do with the “chrome” grill?

If you want to keep the chrome, it wouldn't be much more difficult at all. Just tape off the chrome area so that you don't damage the finish and do the mod normally. If you want to strip the chrome and change the color, you're better off starting with an unpainted grille. Stripping the chrome is no fun and is super tedious.

@@customcargrills Thanks for the super quick reply. My brother has a black 3rd gen with chrome bumpers and grill. I think it would look really sharp to keep that chrome shell look with the classic TOYOTA lettering in white.

I have a 2001 4runner. Would I have to use 1996-1998 grille? To do this mod? Or can I cut the grille that I have on right now and get the same result ? Can you guys make a video of 2001-2002 4runner

In short, it'll be quicker, cheaper, and easier to buy and use a 1996-98 grille frame than trying to modify the 1999-2002 version. I can make a video for the 1999-02 version but there's a lot of extra bodywork involved with repairing the area where that center bar needs to be cut from.

You'd need to first swap a 1996-98 grill on the 2001 first.

Adhesion using the method in the video is quite strong. The area of the grill of which the mesh attaches to is raw. The powder coat finish is bonded to the mesh well too. Using adhesives on raw components is generally a good practice for best results but is not needed in all cases for a quality installation.

@@customcargrills At least in my case, the 2000 toyota 4runner limited edition grill has the outer trim and a flush middle trim piece that holds the toyota logo. It is all one piece basically. This is opposed to the inset cross piece through the middle grill like some of the standard models which can easily be cut away.

That is the difference between the 1999-2002 models vs. the 1996-1998 models, not a difference in the Limited trim vs. other trim models. To do this mod, you need the 1996-1998 frame. That frame can be used on a 1999-2002 model.

@@jacksonbates208 Yes, the 96-98 frame can fit a 99-02 model. Ideally it should be plug & play out of the box. The one and only thing that can sometimes be a potential issue is the female part of the mounting clip. Some 99-02 clips aren’t as tall as the 96-98’s. If this is an issue, there’s a few different fixes. Either make the clip taller, swap the clips, or cut off the attachment clips and bolt it on.
