That reliability is typical of Toyota trucks. The Four Runner and the Land Cruiser are the most reliable vehicles of all makes and models. I have the Timbren springs on the back of my Tacoma. I notice them when I hit large bumps on the road when unloaded. I don’t go off road so it’s not a problem. I love them when I’m towing. I’m very interested in that compressor.

I have the same exact trim. Some advice for viewers from a 3rd time 4runner owner. 1. The trd off road premium doesn't have leather. It's synthetic leather. Ie; fake leather. That being said. It feels the same. Only its not as liable to rip. 2. The kdss system is only offered in trd models. Make sure u get it.. But not trd pro. Don't know why. Makes a big difference in handling driving on road. Less nose dive and more stability. 3. MAKE SURE YOU GET LED HEADKIGHTD AND FOG LIGHTS. 4RUNNER HEADLIGBTS ARE AWEFUL IN PREVIOUS GENERATIONS. ITS LIKE USING CANDLES. 3. The upgrades that the trd pro has do add up to 10k belive it or not. If have connects then great but the shocks on the trd pro are about 3k, the rims and tires are another $3k( dealer new). Skid plates 1k. Exhaust 600. Comes out to a total of about $8k with tax and delivery charges. Add labor and ur looking close to 10k.

Good choice on no expensive light bars. I realize this is an older setup and you now have the Ram, but are those really 35inch tires? If so did you have to have RSG Offroad do a body mount chop as well? I think you state it 9:18 in the video that the tires are 35s.

Hi, Thanks for sharing. Considering you do offroading with your 4Runner, did you add skid plates to the bottom of the car. We just got a 4Runner with KDSS, and plan on doing offroading. Do you recommend upgrading the suspension. You mentioned a smoother ride. Let me tell you, we've been driving after the snow has turned to ice and when going over the ice, it's very bumpy. It's like driving over rocks. I mentioned to my wife. "Wow, this might be what it's like going offroad."

Are you planning the same kind of mods for the Tundra? As a Lexus owner who doesn't go off road (unless you include grass parking), I love hearing the "no problems" stuff with Toyota/Lexus products. Hi. I think the tundra is a great choice with one exception. The size of the gas tank. We live in Ontario Canada. We bought a Tacoma to pull out trailer. The tank size wasn’t discussed ever. Well when towing we can only go about 250km. We discussed upgrading to a Tundra. Well it’s the same tank size. We are now looking at a ford 150. I hope the American Tundra has a larger tank. Good luck….. Your videos are fabulous. Good luck with your trip north. Thanks

Outdated info to some degree but a couple of years ago I saw a well done comparison of towing mpg of a new Taco and a new Tundra. A well set up comparison (almost drove next to each other for an adequate distance). The gas mileage was almost identical.
@davidkaehele89102 жыл бұрын
The 4Runner is very underpowered so towing is not very good. I have a '21 TRD Offroad and towing an empty 5x9 trailer uphill on the highway the car will sit at 5000 rpm. Scary. The gas mileage also drops dramatically. My Armada will not even notice the trailer, AND get better mileage. I bet the tundra will get better mileage too.

The seats, at least in my '21 offroad premium, are not leather. They are some kind of rubber/vinyl material. Since the 4Runner is so hard to get in and out of (compared to the pathfinders and armadas I have owned) I worry it will not last with me sliding in and out. It is very thin material.

You'll want rear suspension air bag support on your Tundra as well, especially if you are going to be using a truck bed camper. If I were you, I'd go back to that shop in Colorado and have them hook you up with an auto leveling air bag kit that will work with the air compressor they already sold you. Yeah, it costs a bit more than the manual fill, but in the long term it's so worth the cost, IMO.

What are your thoughts about using a 4Runner to tow a NuCamp Tab 400. It’s about 350 pounds heavier dry weight than your Basecamp and a hitch weight about 90 pounds lighter than the Basecamp. My alternative is to buy a Tacoma but I’d prefer the 4Runner as my daily driver. Thanks
@TailsofWanderlust2 жыл бұрын
I think you’d be fine. With the lower tongue weight I’d recommend talking to other TaB owners to see if you should get a sway bar or weight distribution hitch. Also, just be careful not to load up too much weight in the trailer. You want to stay about 70% of that 5,000lb tow capacity.

Great explanation. I feel like I learned a lot about 4 runners. My favorite part was when you said you are at 100K miles with no repairs. That is pretty amazing. I have the same air compressor on my Jeep I absolutely love it. I did put an extension hose on the front bumper, so I don't have to lift the hood every time. I have a Wrangler so It is much quicker to connect on the front bumper than dealing with all of the latches to get the hood up. Personally I think it looks better without the light bars unless you are really going to use them. It really is a nice looking SUV, but your truck is going to be amazing. It's hard to let that 4Runner go! Thanks for explaining. I recently purchased a GeoPro 15TB travel trailer almost the exact same tow weight as your Basecamp. Tongue weight is 374lbs. It's going to be behind a 2019 Tacoma TRD Offroad which has a bigger towing capacity than the 4Runner. With your setup did you ever feel like (at times) you needed an equalizer/sway bar hitch? Thank you!
@TailsofWanderlust2 жыл бұрын
I never had one, and it towed fine without. I've heard from others that they make a huge difference and that they highly recommend them. There is significant rear sag in the 4Runner, so I had air bags in the suspension instead. I have a video on towing with the 4Runner where I go into a bit more detail, but I had heard the 4Runner hitch had issues with WDH, so that's why I never went that route. Not sure with the Taco's.
@adamwilliams55162 жыл бұрын
@@TailsofWanderlust Appreciate your response. For safety reasons I can see the point of having one yet my gut tells me that it won't be needed in our case either. The Taco has handled it great so far. Ironically the first day we towed it home from the dealer there was a wind storm for the hour drive home and I felt perfectly comfortable with our current setup. We love your posts, good luck with the Tundra and cab over camper. That'll be a fun makeover!!

Cass, first off, thank you so much for these videos. They’ve been so helpful as I have the same setup: Basecamp/4Runner. I have an sr5 without the rear locker. You stated you never used the control control stuff on the upper console but was wondering how often you have used the rear locker? I have a 3inch OME suspension on mine hand it has made it a lot more capable with the additional clearance.

Not familiar with OME suspension lift. A lift will not get you more ground clearance, it will only give you better approach and departure angles. With a solid axle the diff is the lowest part. The only way to raise the clearance is with bigger tires.

@@davidkaehele8910 True but it does raise the rest of the vehicle off the ground unlike a body lift.

@@erich7863 Yep, you are right. I was thinking of ground clearance as an absolute number, it is not. In real life an extra 3" over 95% of the underbody is huge.

I actually never used the rear locker on mine

@@TailsofWanderlust thank you for the reply. The only reason i considered the trd off road was for the locker but seeing that you had been all over with your 4runner and never used it confirms i am not missing out on much. Then again i like to explore and see beautiful scenery vs trying to get stuck or break components.

Aww, what a proper send off for your 4Runner. Besides the practical setup, it really looks cool too! Hopefully the Tundra will give you years/miles of safe reliable travels. So excited for what is next! Merci
