Toyota 4x4 with Cummins 4BT ~ Rex Reviews (HD)

A turbo diesel Toyota 4x4??? Exactly. In this video, Rex visits the Balckrhino74 workshop to get a look at a Cummins 4BT powdered 1983 Toyota 4x4 truck. As you probably know, a strong coronal mass ejection from the Sun or an E.M.P. burst from a nuclear attack could render any vehicle with sensitive electronic ignition components a useless deathtrap! When the "BIG ONE" finally hits, Blackrhino74 and Rex will be able to enjoy a nice Sunday drive through the countryside to safety in ease while the rest of society scrambles for life running in frantic circles in the nearest WALMART parking lot with no way to get the food and cigarettes they just looted back to 'the hood'! lol
Yeah, OK - we know... just let us have our fun :-) But this truck is fun to drive!
This custom build is still in the testing phase and new mods and improvements are being made continuously. A winning combination of reliability, torque, and fuel economy makes this a highly desirable conversion, especially for applications warranting minimal reliance on sensitive electronic circuitry. Note: A full battery disconnect, additional shielding on critical wiring, and a few spare critical starter components may be advised for mitigating serious EMP threats. An advanced fabrication skill level is required for success.
Current Specs:
Truck: 1983 Toyota 4X4
Engine: Cummins 3.9L 4BT (4 cylinder, B-series, Turbo-charged) with Scott's injectors, BD fuel pin, turned star wheel 1.5 turns.
Transmission: NV4500 from Chevy w/ 13 inch clutch and upgraded Dodge input shaft.
Mods: Custom fit oil pan, fabricated engine mounts from ½" plate (rubber mounted), fabricated tranny mounts from ¾" plate, hydro-boost brakes installed with Toyota master cylinder, slave and master cylinder from 2000 Dodge 5.9L, 24V pay loader starter with modified spur gear, stock Toyota 22R radiator, Toyota Transfer Case with Marlin 4.7:1 gear set, Lockrite locker in rear, TRD front locker from 1999 Toyota Tacoma, stock rear end with 4:10 gear ratio, fuel tank modified for diesel nozzle, rear driveline shortened 8 inches, front drive line lengthened 8 inches, 1 wire GM alternator, 2 inch body lift, 4 inch All-Pro spring lift, All-Pro high steering kit, 1987 4-Runner steering box, 3 inch straight exhaust pipe, 35 lbs boost, mechanical fan from Chevy 350.

Not a bad job. Did you notice the machine tools in the shop? Clearly this guy has more more talent in one finger nail than many of our politicians. Very innovative on finding alternate parts. The only down side to cummins is the freakin' noise! My truck is a VP swapped 24 valve ISB dodge. Sometimes, the noise is not welcome. But everything else is just cool.

UPDATE - - - Highway Economy Results are in: 27 mi/gal (driving like old grandpa), this is only a 2 mi/gal improvement over the city and off-road economy... I suppose the 4BT doesn't care how you drive - it gets what it gets.

Did you feature your build on any forums? I have a 79 with an OM617 in it now. Getting ready to do the 4bt swap. I would love some info about the bellhousing strategy. How does that nv4500 do on the highway with the 4.10 gears? can you go over 60 without hitting 2500 rpm in 5th? Truck looks like fun!

They make those starters in just about every configuration you can imagine 12-24 volt left side mount right side mount and different teeth numbers you shoud be able to find one to meet your needs without modification. Google Minnpar starters, It won't help now but if he ever needs a replacement it might come in handy.

blackrhino74 There are multiple bolt holes in the mounting plate so it can be clocked however you need it. It only takes a couple of minutes to change.

Cole Johnson it's not air lockers. it's an electric locker

James Flores some of the newer trucks have an electronic locker. they use the same axle housing so all you have to do is pull the third member and put it in your truck with. add a switch and you're good to go

She idles down the interstate in overdrive at 75mph with lots of room under the petal, so I think the potential top speed would be well above that which would be safe to drive. You can ask blackrhino74 for his top-speed calculations. :-)
