We take a drive in the 2020 Toyota 86 coupe and see if this is still a great RWD sports car.
The new Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ are just over the horizon, which means there will be some great deals on the outgoing generation. So, is the Toyota 86 coupe still a great sports car? This entry-level RWD two-door teaches you a lot about driving, but it has its flaws. We see how this groundbreaking Toyota stands up after many years on the market.
Should you consider the Toyota 86 at this point, or its cousin, a Subaru BRZ? Are you looking forward to generation two? In today’s video, John Law finds out for Chasing Cars.

I waited 6 months for the first edition and did 10,000 kms in one month. Drove from Central Queensland to Bathurst to watch the 12 Hour, then to Tassie and drove the Targa Tassie roads, back to Phillip Is for World Superbikes then to Geelong for the Avalon International Airshow and finally home. I thought I might want a new Supra but was disappointed in the final product (very cramped compared to the 86). Now have 120,000 kms and still enjoy every drive. P.s., I'm 67 years young.

2:56 The implication you've made here is that the torque dip is the result of taking a turbocharged engine and retconning it to be naturally aspirated, and that Tetsuya Tada and his team weren't aware that more than ECU tuning was necessary to make it work. That's absolutely ridiculous. The torque dip is there by design, because it enables the car to be capable of good fuel economy. Maximum torque at lower revs means better fuel efficiency, then the VVT-i kicks in at around 4000 rpm, resulting in a pause in the power production, followed by much better output in the higher rev range. A car designed PURELY for power won't have the torque dip, but the 86 is an economy car that can be pushed towards performance. It's not an outright performance vehicle...it simply has the potential to be. And the dip is entirely removable with a header and a tune. They gave us a car with the option to keep it economical or upgrade it ourselves to be more performance-oriented. The next generation is supposedly going to be done in a more limited run, but who knows. If they mass produce it, there will be a torque dip that you will likely be able to remove with a tune. If they do a limited run, they might keep it performance focused and there would be no need for a torque dip. We'll just have to wait and see.

The 86 was the best car I have ever owned and I have owned a lot of cars over the years. It is the only car I have kept more than 2 years (had it for 3.5 years)

One of the 2 BEST modern cars under $50k to learn car control and performance driving in "corners" due to its reliability, lightweight, back to basics, RWD and manual transmission. The other modern car

You’ve picked basically my top two cars for that purpose. The only other I would add would be a classic FWD hot hatch, which teaches you to move the car around without much help from the throttle. -Tom

i have an auto gt 86 2020 and it has a different infotainment system. Much better than the one on in the video. Im not sure if it's an aftermarket one or not (i dont think it is) - i did buy this car off of copart-. Is it possibly because mine is a GT not a base trim 86?

‘For the price’ is the suffix you need to put on every compliment about this car 😂. But seriously I don’t know what people need out of a ‘daily’ car apart from being cheap, fun, safe and reliable. Feels like the masses just want to be driven to work on their lounge chair. Which is fair enough, can’t fault that logic. For me though the 86 is and has been an excellent daily. It’s made me a better driver than a Yaris cross ever would, but it’s also made me more opinionated. I drive my 86 to work everyday in Sydney traffic and drop my two girls at preschool 2 days a week. I’m 6 foot 1 and the youngest juuuuuust fits behind me in a forward facing car seat. My 3rd kid is gonna need a ride to preschool soon as she turn 1 soon. This is the only problem for me because legally I have to wait till the oldest is 4 and a certain height (which she is) before she’s allowed in the front seat in a booster seat (Aus Law). After watching John Cadogan’s latest video on kids travelling in the front seat and this video reminding me how great this car is, I think I’ll buy us all an Uber till I can legally do it. It is that good, I wish manufacturer’s made more cars like this.

I own a 2017 AT 86 and its still super fun. I put a AEM intake in and borla S type exhaust. Still might trade it for a newer 86 manual if they put a 2.4 in or come with factory turbo but its a super fun commuting car

Great review Johnny!! Pretty roomy for us giants - seemed like you were on the boil most of that drive haha. Was totally surprised by the boot space with the seats folded ANDDDD I don’t think I even realised it had 4 seats. I think potential buyers should look at track work and driver training to increase their driving ability relative to the “lack of safety” ;)

118 kW/t isn't bad at all but bumping that up to a not unreasonable 140 kW/t would turn it into a weapon! (and it will then keep up with my MINI 😁) They seem to hold their value really well too so are worth spending coin on and looking after.

Is this a GT version or base version? Why some 2020 Toyota 86 don't have the display on dashboard??
@hermittanimoto9325
@hermittanimoto9325 3 жыл бұрын
He has the GT manual version mate. The one you speak of Thats the 86 base manual where the dashboard has no display and the climate switch are 80s dated instead of 90s in the GT version. Its the cheapest, rawest version but where am from in Canada the top of the line BRZ version is same price so people are silly to go 86 route when the same car is cheaper in the subaru brz version...only reason to go 86 is for that gorgeous neptune blue...

I owned a GTS 86 and enjoyed it for a while but eventually the lack of torque/power quickly made this car boring. To say this car needs a turbo is an understatement, why are Toyota resisting the movement to turbo powered engines ? I ended up trading the 86 for an i30 SR, unfortunately the wife drives auto only so could not purchase the i30N as manual only. Can I say the 1.6 tubo in the SR is super responsive and the torque puts a smile on my face. The power put down on the SR compared to the underpowered 86 is like night and day. My advice to anyone considering purchasing an 86 buy the standard and use the extra cash to fit a turbo or wait and hope and pray next generation comes with a turbo fitted. If not go buy an i30N and be safe in the knowledge Hyundai's Warranty also covers you for casual track days.
