Just completed a diy fluid and filter change on my 2008 rav4 rransmission with 164,000 miles. My last trans fluid change was at 120,000 miles. After watching several KZbin videos on trans fluid changes on various vehicles the consensus seems to be to change your trans fluid every 30,000 miles. I believe the 30,000 mile standard is definitely worth adhering to no matter what nonsense intervals the car manufacturers recommend.
@boomerguy99353 жыл бұрын
Yes!!! Changing my fluid at 30K mile intervals shows definite improved shifting immediately after changing the fluid. This speaks for itself. I don't know of any automotive fluid that is "lifetime", regardless of its advertising. Yes, quality synthetic fluids are better than conventional quality fluids but ALL fluids need to be changed regularly. I am a believer in Amsoil because I've used all of their fluids in all of my vehicles for over 30 years. I am not a dealer and I don't get paid for saying this. This stuff has proven itself to me in better performance and extended life on my parts. In the long run, it is a money saver. Just like shoes and tools, you get what you pay for when you buy a product with a proven reputation.

If you plan on keeping a car I absolutly recommend taking care of your transmission. I bought a ct200h with 30,000 miles on it and did a drain and fill on the trans with amsoil. While I do trust toyota/lexus engineering, I don't buy into the maintenence intervals at all. Fluids start to break down due to heat and age.

I tow a little trailer so I changed to AMSOIL high heat severe . Very easy to do. 1) heat car for an hour driving and shifting gears. 2) open filler and drain nut overflow. Make shure vehicle is off. 4) put a drain pan under and make sure vehicle is level. 5) You could change the filter if you know how to torque the nuts properly and change seal gasket

I know that Mobil 3309 is T-IV according to their website and MSDS. I've done some research (don't know if it's true) but this is what I found. Each car manufacturer has to pay an environmental fee for each car sold. The EPA and associated agencies take into account the frequency that the fluids that are changed out. The more often the fluids are replaced the higher the environmental impact. What are you going to do with the fluids? So how would a car manufacturer get around this? Making the fluid "lifetime". So instead of replacing the fluid every 20 - 30k miles, you only change it every 100k miles. Les frequent fluid changes means less fees they have to pay, saving them millions. The fluid is shot at 30k miles, but for most drivers they'll gimp along, going another 70k miles on bad fluid. By that time the trans is shot and out of warranty. Manufacturers can put a little green leaf on their cars, make heart-tugging commercials, and market themselves and say they're environmentally friendly, but at the end of the day, it's all about money.

Absolutely. I had a 1992 Buick Park Avenue and got the trans remanned. The guys said to never flush, always just do 2 - 3 drains and refills and change the filter at 20k miles. Another trans shop said the exact same thing. I now have a 2003 Matrix (T-IV) and did just that. Cleaned the pan and magnets, new filter and 4 drains/refills. None of my cars will ever get a trans flush. My Hyundai Elantra 2016 has 12k miles and going to do a 4 qt. drain and refill. No serviceable filter so maintaining clean fluid is even more important. Great explanation, good to know the dealers are making bigger business while changing damaged transmission. What is also interesting to mention, once the transmission oil is aging, there might be high voltage insulation issues for Toyota Hybrids (e.g. Prius). I own an european equivalent of Prius GenIII model for which the dealers didn’t change the transmission oil, the car has now~60k miles onboard and the systems issued several times the special P0AA6 DTC meaning High Voltage system insulation fault. Planned to change the ATF WS fluid of the transmission, it is the first recommendation in the Workshop repair manual. Thanks for comments!

allright everyone let me give you some info first hand. Just changed the ATF on my 2008 ES 350 with 104k miles. Dropped the trans pan down (around 20 10mm bolts) and changed the filter inside(& o ring)(held by 2 10 mm bolts)witch is NOT "like screen" type of filter. It is regular cellulose material with some pvc parts to hold the cellulose material together. It was the original and it is Denso brand. There are 2 magnets (alot of metal shavings on them) that needs to be cleaned as well. Total amount of oil leaked out is about 3 quarters and 8 oz. If you do not drop the pan and change the filter you are doing only 50% of the job! New pan gasket will be needed as well. Now my trans makes no vibration when I am waiting on red light and changes gears on little lower RPMs than before. Took me about 4 hours total to change it but I did change the engine oil as well. AMSOIL signature series used for both procedures. Next engine oil change will be at 20k or 1 year, whichever comes first.(syntetic amsoil filter used)

My 2011 Sequoia drains 3 and 1/2 quarts, so it will take 4 and likely 5 intermittent changes for best results. After the 2nd fill, performance improved so the 6000 lb vehicle felt like it lost 4000 lbs of weight. Hints: Used Amsoil, 24mm fill plug almost 23mm across the flats, but 23 mm socket is too small, so use a 15/16 instead. For front diff, no room for 10mm socket hex so use a 10mm L Allen wrench. Recently, I pulled out the automatic transmission fluid dipstick and wiped it on a paper towel. The fluid still looks like brand new. It's still a very light pink. Does the fluid need to be changed, even if it looks great? Does automatic transmission fluid break down with age? Changing the fluid is not something I'd ever attempt myself, and I would have to take it to a mechanic. So, I don't want to waste my time and money if the 9 year old fluid is still good.

MTB Addiction -definitely change the fluid. A manual transmission does not have the issue of torque converter friction plate wear contaminating the TF like an automatic does. This greatly reduces the risk of crud being present to clog any valves or passages. Depending on age and how hard it’s been driven it may still have metal contamination but a simple drain and fill (or multiple) should be perfectly safe.

I have tried your idea (on a 2001 Honda Accord) and can speak from experience that the transmission will shoot the old fluid out of the "exhaust" hose but the "intake" hose won't suck the new fluid in. What I had to end up doing was having someone run the car while I poured new fluid into the dip stick tube. This method works on cars that have a dip stick as all you have to do is have your assistant turn off the car immediately after you are done pouring new fluid into the transmission. From there you just reconnect the hoses and check your fluid level and adjust accordingly. I wouldn't recommend attempting this on newer cars that only have a fill hole in a difficult place to get to as you need to pour the new fluid in as fast as the old fluid is coming out otherwise you can run the transmission dry and damage it.
@mikefennema55613 жыл бұрын
I have done this twice now on an 05 Corolla and 10 Sonata. The Hyundai procedure is to let the fluid pump out till bubbles are seen and turn off engin immediatly. Refill the trany and do it a second time for maximum exchange. This worked well for me and the Sonata shifts better.

It makes little sense that in transmission it's "Lifelong".. and in bottle it's 5 years.
@repairvehicle5 жыл бұрын
Use within 5 years it means it should not be used after 5 years. Use fresh fluid, ATF fluid like any other automotive fluids starts separating, additives might float on top or even go bad. Fresh fluid is always best option. Every fluid has expiration, max 5 years for synthetic ATF and none synthetic like ws 3 years max Fluid good for life, means for warranty time 60k miles/5 years max. If fluid was good for life, then transmission would have life time warranty and never would fail. How is lifelong makes sense if it's not defined what it means???

Any advice is appreciated. I’m a do it yourself guy whose on a budget and hate going to the dealership to be robbed.

Is Valvoline maxlife universal ATF fluid?
@scorporsupremacy79485 жыл бұрын
repairvehicle I really don’t know but, it says it is the equivalent to the transmission fluid found it most of the import cars along with GM & Ford vehicles.
@repairvehicle5 жыл бұрын
I just looked it up and it is universal ATF. I personally don't recommend universal ATF fluids. I rather use WS than universal. I have comments from people who switched to maxlife from WS, they didn't notice any difference. However, when people switched to Amsoil they noticed big difference, including my self. It's your personal choice when it comes to ATF fluid. I would not replace filter if it's screen type, if it's not screen type then it's good idea to replace since your vehicle is over 10 years old.

i have 2014 corolla S with CVT transmission and now it has 70k miles. i do all my oil change and maintenance at toyota dealership and when i ever show up for a serves i always ask them are you guys sure i dont need to change my CVT fluid? they always tell me no need to its sealed and its for life since you got the CVT. im really having hard time now by changing it or not the factory says no and people say you should... now the car is out of the warranty im afraid to change it and then something wrong goes wtih the CVT around this miles already.. is it matter to change it around my miles? or CVT dont need fluid change as toyota says? Thanks you for the information.
@repairvehicle7 жыл бұрын
Mohammed Alotaibi, 1. Sealed transmission means there is no dipstick for checking transmission fluid level. 2. If it's good for life, why wouldn't they give you life time warranty on transmission? 3. The reason why they don't want to change your fluid is because they are waiting for transmission to break so that they can make more money by replacing transmission. 4. CVT transmission are known to be less reliable than regular automatic transmission, and dealer would not tell you that. 5. Fresh transmission fluid will never harm the transmission, fresh fluid might not help if damage has been made to the transmission with old fluid. 6. For the transmission to last long time, best to change fluid every 30k miles, this is what I do on my cars. 7. Why Toyota does not recommend changing atf fluid? Because they do not want you to drive your car for long time without any problems. They want people to buy cars every time warranty expires.

My Tacoma has 150k miles and the transmission fluid has never been changed, should I drain drop the pan change the filter and refill or go the dealership for a flush?
@repairvehicle6 жыл бұрын
I personally wouldn't go to the dealer. I would drain the fluid and change the filter. Then, I would add correct amount of ATF fluid, start the engine check fluid level, add if not enough. Turn engine off, drain the fluid and add correct amount again, and check level again. I use ATF fluid from here www.bestautofluids.com

I have an 06 Scion tC (which uses a Camry engine) and I have 140k miles without a single transmission fluid change. I have been told that the old transmission fluid is probably somewhat pasty and is holding my transmission together. I want to keep my car running for a long time but I am afraid that changing the fluid now will cause more harm than good. What should I do?
@repairvehicle7 жыл бұрын
+richiesparkz, your transmission fluid at 140k miles is just dirty and it's not providing proper lubrication to the transmission components. So, every day you drive with dirty fluid, more wear happens to the transmission. You can stop transmission wear from happening, by replacing transmission fluid. Fresh ATF fluid will not cause transmission to fail, drain the old fluid add new fluid. Avoid transmission fluid flush. I have video on my channel about it. Will fresh engine oil cause engine to fail? Off course not, why will fresh ATF fluid causes transmission to fail? Transmission shops want your transmission to fail so that they can steal more money from. They will discourage you, not to replace fluid. Check my channel I have ton of information about transmission filters, fluid and how to change ATF fluid in Toyota and other vehicles.

Hey guys really want some feedback from youtube. I just purchased a 2005 Lexus LS430 it has 100k miles flat and was regularly serviced one owner but not at the dealer. I brought it to the dealer and they recommended NOT to change the Transmission fluid. I am confused if it should be changed or not as it is sealed ? I thought the drain and fill method would be okay and I am not sure if it has ever been changed in the past which is what worried them .. Shifts like butter with no problems but I want to maintain my car and keep it in perfect condition.. any input would be great. thanks
@repairvehicle7 жыл бұрын
Dimitrios M, pure fresh fluid will not hurt transmission it will only extend the life of the transmission. The reason why dealer does not want to change your atf is because technicians are lazy and they want to do only easy stuff brake and oil change. The other reason he is for the transmission to fail so that he can make a lot of money on you, by putting a new one.

Can I use the same Toyota atf I have a 2008 RAV4 2.4L sports at 80k should I do a drain and fill? Take out 3.5 quarts and put in new oil
@repairvehicle7 жыл бұрын
+Mark Namoco, you can use Toyota WS ATF fluid in your vehicle. However, there is a better ATF fluid than WS, synthetic ATF fluid. I strongly recommend draining old fluid and replacing with new fluid. Assuming you have correct amount of fluid in your transmission now, then it's just fine to drain and fill the same amount. Have you seen this video about changing WS in Toyota? kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5KuaHupfKp4otU
@mark.namoco7 жыл бұрын

repairvehicle so if I'm only taking out 3.5 quarts the first and second service what's happened to the other dirty oil since RAV4 usually have 12 quarts of atf?
@repairvehicle7 жыл бұрын
+Mark Namoco , old fluid is mixed with new fluid. It's better to have 50-80% of fresh fluid in the transmission than to have 100% old fluid. did you get a chance to watch my video on transmission flush? Because I explain in detail about mixing old ATF with new.

@thesart_7 жыл бұрын
it is extremely bad idea to replace transmission fluid if you never did it before. Because after 30 000 miles it loose it washing effect and just lubricate transmission. And when you will put there a new fluid it will pick up all the dirt and put it in to clutches. It will be the end of it. You need to replace it every 30 000, or leave it.
