I had my Subaru Solterra upgraded recently and the result is a significant improvementThe percentage is now visible on the console. Further, the range for my trim (the higher one which includes 20 inch wheels as opposed to 18 inch)) as given by the guess-meter is now 420 km (252 miles) which is pretty well consistent with the trip-meter.Of course this extra range comes at the expense of the buffer. A week ago, with I confess some trepidation, I went on a road trip. It went very well - so that my range angst is lifted. The upgrade ensures that DC charging is now not throttled back until after 3,86 times in a 24 period. A number of journalist (and so-called ones) come with subjective critiscms for example the drivers environment. I really like it and the driving experience is great. I do not like the driver attention sensors irritating beep; no problem I simply turned it off. The build quality of the Solterra (applies to its sister the Toyota BZ4X) is good (certainly better than Teslas ) The narrator is a real moaner; an expert is a person a long way from home!

I drove a solterra as a loaner yesterday and I was blown away by the build quality as well as how quiet and refined it was in both eco and power moode. The range to my shock was 280 miles with the climate control off. Of course I haven't driven it in cold weather yet but I would love to try it out in cold conditions too with only the seat heaters on or defrost on. I love the dual x mode feature.

@@stevenjones916 Like you I have yet to see any evidence that the wheels fell off. Toyota said under certain circumstances the wheel studs could loosen and need retightening.What I took from that was that Toyota were acting in order to prevent a possible accident and of course that constitutes a failure in some peoples eyes. They weren't the first manufacturer to recall a vehicle and they won't be the last . I saw a test done recently where 6 Evs were charged to 100% and driven until they stopped. The test was carried out at the same time and as near as possible to the same conditions.The claimed range from the manufacturer was never achieved .The actual percentages ranged from 75% to 86% of the manufactures figures. The vehicle that achieved 86% had a 90 kWh battery and one other vehicle cost £100000 which managed a range of 208 miles. That's approximately twice the price of a Toyota / Subaru.

From a BZ4X AWD owner with 8500 miles under my belt (I do about 1200 miles a month approx 70% home charge and 30% fast charge) Toyota for my model claim 286 miles. I have done 242 as my best (last week in warm weather with air con on) so 84% of claim In winter (sub zero temps) the worst I got 195 miles with heater on so 68% of claim I regularly use the motorway and cruising at 70mph Toyota claim 150kw charge speed Best I got was 137kw between 20 and 80% so 91% of claimed speed It does tail off a lot towards 80% Toyota claim 3.9 miles per kw Best I have had over 80 miles of countryside driving is 4.3 miles per kw 110% of claim Worst I have had in winter, with heating on the motorway over 150 miles of driving is 2.9 miles per kw 74% of claim I am not a Toyota fan boy (there are niggles with the car) it is the first Toyota I have owned and I have other cars and bikes so have a very balanced view. Interesting how reviews are done from journalists who get the car for a short amount of time (or maybe not at all), might be worth getting opinions of those who actually own and live with them before you decide whether to buy one or not. Do I wish it charge faster? well yes but 99% of the time it is no issue Do I wish it went further on a charge? not really, it is about right for my bladder and need to drink coffee Is it the best car in the world? No Is it the worst car in the world? No Is it just like every other car that had good and bad points? Yes Do I think Toyota have lied? No but I think just like every other manufacturer they have picked the best results in the best conditions and gone with that. I have never had an ICE car match the claimed MPG either. If the update gives me more range and faster speeds then I will be pleased, if it doesn't well the car is perfectly fine as it is.

What about the warranty on the battery? Owners must go to Toyota to get battery checked each year (cost: $500 each year; $5000 for ten years). It is unclear, what it will be done besides reading out the BMS. These "checks" are mandatory, otherwise the warranty is no longer valid. There are lawyers in the US which believe this being a hidden surplus on the buying price - since there is nothing mechanics can/must service on a battery for $500 every year. This, as well, is fishy.
@leobreevoort9151

It means Toyota's extended 10 year warranty is not a warranty at all. It's an insurance policy with payments hidden in unnecessary service visits. They could read out the BMS over the air, if they wanted to.

My bZ has a lifetime consumption of 3mi/kwh and that's with 8500 miles and at least 1500mi of not just highway miles but actual long distance. It's true that it doesn't achieve EPA range but it gets close and it's actually pretty livable. Things that will get you are using the heater too much (it helps to always have the recirculator on once it's warm) and just the cold in general. Driving in 70-85° recently the car performed very well achieving mid 3.x mi/kwh with some AC on the highway. Not bad 🤷🏾. Now, I did do a drive that was done at freezing temps and yeah it didn't get good efficiency like 2.4mi/kWh. I hadn't discovered the recirculator trick yet tho. 😊

No, all tests are a standard route driven within 3% of a scripted amount. The proportion of highway, urban driving etc is different between the US,EU and asian tests and are exactly the same in ICE and EV cars. As with ICE cars, it is rare for anyone to match the efficiency figures quoted as the tests are artificial and don't take into the other morons on the road. The real wold differences are well published, and for most Tesla it is about 12% drop, many around 8-10%, while the Porsche taycan is +35% MORE than the EPA range. The EPA is the closest to ICE and EV ranges.

I bought a BZ4X last November 2022, it was a great car to drive...As long as you didn't want to drive too far...Last July 2023, I traded it in for a Rav4 PHEV and took the hit of €15,000. The Rav4 PHEV is a far superior car, it has a real range of 85 - 90 km in EV mode, which is more than enough for daily city driving and then an ICE for long road trips, when you don't want to wait a few hours to recharge...Also, the range only drops by about 4 - 5 km with the AC on. So if you haven't bought a BZ4X yet, or as I grew to call it, "The Toyota Regret" I would strongly recommend the best of both worlds and get a PHEV!

That statement means turn HVAC on and range drops by 100 miles. That's not an actual range reduction it's just a GUESS. They say it'll get more accurate because the car either learns or they're planning more updates. To be honest anyone familiar with EVs knows the range is on the GOM the guessometer. It's not reducing the range by working out consumption figures etc it's just saying oh the Aircon is on cut 100 miles off that'll do

This BZ4X is what you get when the company has been in denial about EVs for the last 10 years, and instead tries to push hybrid & hydrogen solutions. Toyota is 5-10 years behind Tesla & the ~100 Chinese EV makers with no chance of ever catching up. The decade will not end well for Toyota or any of the Japanese legacy auto makers. In fact, Japan is at serious risk of losing its entire auto industry and tanking its entire economy. Buy our Hybrids instead, that we make much more money of." The most I did was eight fast chargings with my old Tesla Model X 2016 during a 16h period. When driving from Sweden to Denmark during summer vacation we made three to six fast chargings per day, for two weeks. The more we charge, the faster it receives because optimal temperature. But that only applies to EVs with real temperature management. I'm still at Toyota/Subaru bankrupt before 2025 unfortunately.

I think this is the same with many other EVs, in general terms. Real world is best figured at 80% of claimed until you can test higher for yourself. That’s the safest way of planning a longer range trip. Reading real world tests is a great way of calculating what you can expect. Although this sounds worse, most people will only notice range on longer trips. Given that the average trip is less than 100m in urban driving you may not see it all that often. Melbourne to Brisbane will most likely include a stop over. Maybe not. You have to think very carefully on all long road trips and if the vehicle can’t charge quickly enough, then don’t buy it. If it does not have the real range, YOU needs then once again, don’t buy it. Every EV expert should already know this, and I am surprised that its come as a revelation that long EV trips require planning. Subaru is 4 wheel drive only and I think that’s a reasonable difference.

As an EV driver in the UK if I choose to go on a journey of around 200miles I have to plan a scheduled stop. Being of a certain age I couldn’t drive 200miles without having a break so it’s not a problem. I drive a Solterra and it’s easily the best Subaru I’ve owned. EVs are not for everyone it’s dependent on your personal circumstances. Many people have their own agenda for hating EVs and many have never even driven one. As far as I know, nobody has reported their wheels falling off and I can confirm that my wheels are definitely attached. Talk about giving a dog a bad name. We should stop use kW as charging speed. What we should use is time from 10% (or 20%) to 80% divided by range it give (or otherwise) so get how much range you get in given time, because this is only important for driver. And maybe miles/km per kWh so we know efficiency. Both are only metric which should interest owners. Because how big battery is or how much kW charging it can do, have nothing to how you use it.
@jonathanfields4ever

Percentage makes even less sense than kW. If you want a universal standard that makes it easy to compare, it should be miles per minute or something.
@m_sedziwoj
@m_sedziwoj Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanfields4ever you don't understand: 20% to 80% takes 30min and give 300miles of rang => 10miles per minute 20% to 80% takes 90min and giving 180miles of range => 2miles per minute. (yeah, first is more as Tesla, 2nd is more as Toyota) so first is charging 5 times faster. I would ignore first 10-20% because you would never want to go to 0% in real life, and not more than 80% because battery degradation (li-ion are still most popular)

Thanks for the update Sam. It's a shame Toyota having sold reliable and great vehicles for so long are now struggling with keeping up and are having to lie about range per charge. That's like cleiming a vehicle can do 50mpg when it can only achieve 30 mpg and 20mpg in cold conditions. Simply a blatent LIE and selling a vehicle which is not 'Fit for purpose'. Would certainly be asking for money back and threaten court action if this was not forthcoming.

This game changing range upgrade isn’t what you think, well, according to Toyota Ireland that is…It doesn’t release any hidden range by removing the buffer. I had the upgrade carried out last Friday and there was absolutely no range difference, I did get the percentage display added and apparently I can now charge, using a fast charger, 3.8 times in a 24 hour period…That’s not too bad living in Ireland, as we can drive coast to coast in about 4 hours, but I’ve booked a trip to France and it’ll definitely be an issue there! The most concerning element of the range of my BZ4X is that when I picked it up in November 2022, it had a 100% charge, with a range of 450kms…(November here is winter)…and now in May, with the temperature considerably higher, I am only getting 409kms on a 100% charge. The range on our Nissan Leaf however has increased by about 20kms, now that the temperatures are increasing…The Toyota service department are unable to explain this to me and even suggested that there is a problem with my home charger…No such problem exists with the leaf mind you and when I said “If there’s a problem with the charger, why does the display say 100%”…The guy scratched his head and said, “I don’t know, its all new to us”. Very reassuring hey? 🙄 In short, if you haven't bought a BZ4X, don't bother

Toyota cars used to be reliable simple cars, now when simplicity is gone due to regulations, so is reliability. Corroded Land Cruiser/Prado main frame anyone?

Its the truth that Toyota is way behind Tesla and other EV makers as they are too late to adopt electric. BZ3 is much better than BZ4X by using better tech. BZ4X and BZ3 won't sell well unless consumers have limited other options. I owned 7 Toyotas in past 20 years but switched to Tesla last year. If looked after properly, there is no reason older cars cannot go on pretty much indefinitely which is more than can be said for modern complex vehicles which are often rendered uneconomical to repair by electronic failures. Our 15:year old mini clubman diesel is rust free, reliable, fast, comfortable, with 70mpg, £20pa road tax and most importantly, no further depreciation. For fun, my 45 year old sports car is better than new and completely reliable. It has doubled in value since I bought it and due to its simplicity, I can maintain it myself. I don't require any "safety features" and what can be more "green" than recycling it, repeatedly. I have no interest whatsoever in modern cars and certainly will not be wasting my money to buy one. Depreciation more than offsets any savings in fuel costs and building the thing and shipping it here probably exceeds any perceived environmental benefit. Or are we going to accept this nonsense that it will reduce the impact in this country and we can ignore the impact where it was built, where the iron ore was dug up etc
