How many miles of range does the Subaru Solterra really get? The Subaru Solterra is estimated to have 228 miles of range on a full charge. Climate and driving behavior can drastically change the amount of miles you can drive a Subaru Solterra. In this video, I drive the Solterra for a full week to put it to the test.

I traded in my Nissan Leaf for a Tesla Model Y and now I have an EV that fits my lifestyle. I took my family on vacation from NYC to South Carolina last month and it was seamless. We drove for 2hrs (about 150 miles), charged for 20 minutes while we used the restroom and bought snacks, then drove another 2hrs (about 150 miles) and repeated the process. After 8hrs of driving we stopped at a hotel spent the night and started the process over the next day. Based on my experience with a slow charging EV (nissan leaf) vs a fast charging, long range, EV (anything Tesla). I would recommend getting the latter. It doesn't have to be a Tesla, Ford, Hyundai (ioniq 5 or 6), Kia EV6, VW etc.

I have just had my Solterra upgraded here in Norway . now the percent is shown on the console and the range for 100% battery is 420 km (252 miles). The value stipulated when I bought this Solterra was 416 km (250 miles). I am therefore satisfied. The car has performed well (as Alex states in his verdict). As for being cautious (nervous) about road trips, well I will embark on my first road trip in a couple of days. I am sure it will go well since I have mapped a number of chargers on the route. Bye the way, the new upgrade permits 4 DC charging (actually 3.86) in a 24 hour period. This is a significant improvement over the former 2.. Bear in mind that the conservative, restrictive control over charging is motivated by a desire on the part of Subaru/Toyota to lower degradation of the battery pack. The present improved restriction is fine by me because I do not see me going over the top with extremely long road trips. Conclusion: very satisfied.

The Solterra is tested thus week in The Netherlands against the Audi Q4.... Solterra the far better car. More efficient motors, far more comfort, better charging, given the considerable smaller battery pack, good range of 330km. This figure with higway cruising 130km an hour... . Our Bz4x manage, 110 highway, 420km. The journalists were impressed with the Solterra a very balanced EV and far better than expected....

I have the Bz4x XLE AWD in Canada and the car is excellent my average so far in winter has been around 330km on a full charge with the heating constantly on. With the heating of I would expect to get around 400kms on a charge so I am very happy with it. I have a level 2 charger at home it charges in about 9 hrs so basically while I'm sleeping it charges and in the morning it's ready to go with 100%

Just leased a 2023 Solterra Limited 3 days ago . Coming from a 2nd gen Toyota sequoia it’s definitely taking some getting used to . Hopefully I will learn all the tech over the next couple weeks . Thanks for showing that brake thingy button btw . We thought that was something else entirely. I’m currently using level one charging with no issues so far . My work commute is approx 40 miles round trip so not bad . The interstate road noise is louder than I expected but regular roads seem perfectly fine . The steering wheel has been an issue blocking my view of the instrument cluster so I ordered a seat cushion to help remedy that . All minor things that I have to adjust to but overall the car is fun to drive . I’m looking forward to not having to wait in line at the gas station every week ! 🙌🏻

It's summer in AZ so it's been in the 90's nearly every day. We use climate control normally. We average about 210 miles indicated on a full charge. Note that the battery "limits" that can be set in the car aren't the actual battery limits. "100%" is actually closer to 80% and "0" is closer to 20%. So you can "fully" charge it each time and the computer maintains the battery. The set scale is to allow you to limit fast charging because it takes so much time to charge from 80% - 90%. I find the quessometer to be pretty accurate. We have a level 2 charger and a super-off-peak rate of $.063/KwH. So we charge about once a week and the electricity is half what the gas cost for our former 47MPG Prius.

How is your power .063 kwh? Are you not factoring in transmission/delivery and fees? In Maine, if I divide my power bill by kwh used, it comes to $0.25/kwh and that is with a discount over 700kw for having a heat pump (this discounted rate only applied during heating season). It is so frustrating when Telsa and Energystar use the price per Kwh, which is only 1/3 of the actual cost per KwH on my bill. At $0.25 a KwH, and factoring in the long winter, people are reporting 2.4 miles per KwH = $0.10 a mile. A subaru crosstrek at 31 mpg and currently $3.30/gallon for gas = $0.10 per mile. The crosstrek isnt even a hybrid.

So you rather pollute using fossil fuel each second the engine is running? Thats not an environmental factor along with the extraction, transportation, refining, distribution and burning a gallon each 24 miles or so? Fuel is a dedicated product for vehicles. If you are a two car family, then you can likely have at least one of those cars be this EV without an issue. Subaru should have some recommended guidelines for charging such as the optimal percentage range for daily charging. It depends on the battery chemistry, but you can typically charge every day at on an L2 home charger up to 90% without harming the battery pack.

I do appreciate your videos, including this one. However, as you said, you wouldn't want to take in on a long trip. I have a 2022 Forester Premium and it gets pretty good gas mileage. Also, being that my wife and I live in central Texas and do a lot of road trips out of state... we'd never make it to any border. LOL! FYI, we made it home from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to almost Austin, Texas, with one tank of gas on one of our trips. That's 425 miles. I'll keep my gas vehicle. Thanks, Alex.

Test drove the Solterra today - loved it! But I can't get past the low range. I make a regular 200 mile one way drive to Southern Colorado and back and need at least 275 miles on the range before I'd consider it. I'll stick with my 22 Outback Wilderness for now.

I was one of them that signed up for the solterra and can’t wait to get it while gas prices was as crazy as $7 a gallon and the tax benefits. Back then many unknown like the interest rates and how much taxes can saved. Then we have the recall happened and glad I didn’t buy it. Then I been researching more about EV cars and saw that it takes too long to recharge and very few charging station. So I decided that it is not as convenient as I want. And the prices are too high. I want the Forester Hybrid and when are they making it?

Same deal for us, got one as a rental for a 300 mile trip. What a nightmare, it took 3 1/2 hours to fast charge from 20% to 85%. Every other car came and went in 1 hour or less and then there was us still sitting there for hours.

Former Subaru forrester driver here that had a deposit on a Soltera until I sat in it at an auto show. I really wanted to like it because I loved my Subaru. The first thing that was a no for me was the stupid dashboard screen that sits behind the wheel above the dash rather than in the dash. Stupid! Then all the negatives about range etc. So glad I bought a Kia EV 6! I’ve had it about 9 months now & absolutely love it! Range isn’t an issue for me & I’ve had it on two road trips including the charging desert in the Midwest!

The reason why you find it stupid is because you're one of those people who are slow to adapt to new things, or having to change an old habit. The high dashboard screen makes a lot more sense than the traditional screen where you have to look down in between your steering wheel. The eye travel from outside, on the road, to the high dash screen is reduced so you don't take your eyes off the road for that long, your eyes focus much faster from one to the other, and the steering wheel / your hands will never obstruct the gauge regardless of what position the wheel and your hands are in. It does take a little getting used to since you have to lower the steering wheel to see over it, but it become second nature once you're used to it like anything else.

I didn't like the dashboard at first, and it took me a few weeks to get used to it. Now it just feels more natural and helps me keep my eyes on the road. I'm 6 foot tall and my wife is 5'2" and neither of us have a problem viewing the gauge cluster.

I would like to know if your test was done in regular or eco mode? You never mentioned it in your video. We bought the Solterra Limited a few weeks ago. I agree with you about the vehicle not being good for road trips but we are retired and have a 2023 Outback Touring for road trips. We plan to use the Solterra for everyday driving. My Grizzl-e level 2 charger cost $350 + tax and I spent $212 to have a 220-240 outlet installed right below my breaker box inside my garage. So, under $600.

Autoweek, dutch car magazine, tested the Solterra against the Audi q4 etron. The Solterra was the far better car and EV.... . Faster charging, far more comfort, more efficient motors. Far smaller battery pack compared to the Audi, so somewhat less range, 330km, the Audi with far bigger and heavier battery pack, 380km. The testers were very impressed with the Solterra and said it was a good EV, worth the money. It had a better build quality as well although some cheaper materials in interior but rock solid....

Toyota has been promoting 735 mile range solid state battery. Solterra and BZ4 are basically the same car.

On paper the Solterra range is great.. but in Maine we have long cold winters with a lot of wind. Combine that with a highway speed limits of 70/75mph where traffic flows 78-80mph and this Solterra can only manage 130 miles, not even enough range for a one hour each way round trip. Once you calculate the hit from cold/wind/speed you are only getting 2 miles per KwH and power is $0.25 kwh in Maine. This puts it way above an efficient gas vehicle per mile. Any maintenance savings will goto tires since 1. They cost more to handle the weight, and 2. The weight of the EV wears them quicker.

We bought a Solterra because we live on a rough country road in Australia and really need high clearance and AWD. Level 1 charging at home and at work is fine for commuting to town. We keep a plug in hybrid for longer trips, but recently we were forced to use the Solterra instead. We had a number of excitements, including a charger that was broken, where we’d already ordered dinner before we figured it out. We trickled in to the Echuca fast charger late at night ( expected) on less than 0% (unexpected). Nevertheless, we made it fine with the bonus miles for idiots they seem to provide. I’m more irritated with the poor maintenance of the chargers. Only Tesla has figured out that they need to guarantee to have them available and working. Private enterprise isn’t doing very well with supplying and maintaining chargers so far.

It looks like your Solterra does a good job of estimating range, adjusting with your AC usage, too. My Tesla Model 3 is a guessing game. It always overestimates its range. I usually have to calculate that it will use 20 to 30 pct more than it shows in miles remaining.

Don’t use the mileage on the top of the screen, use the applet in the menu. That one is very accurate. The top one is maximum range under perfect conditions.

We have a 2023 Solterra touring model. Once in a while when backing out of the garage, the automatic braking or park assist suddenly and violently engages. We can't figure out how to make that stop. My wife is getting tired of having her head bounce off the seat back when she leaves for work. There's nothing behind her, so there's no reason for the brakes to slam on. Any tips to resolve that?

Does the Solterra navigation system direct you to where chargers are that you would need to stop at on a lengthy trip? I believe Tesla and some others do that. However, you can use any of the charge station apps (EVgo, Electrify America, PlugShare, etc) to locate and display the directions up on your touch screen using the Apple Carplay/Android Auto.

See how far you would get going up and down the hills including the not so perfect flat roads we have here. With air or heat in summer or winter, I'll bet maybe 150 at the most. If someone does very little driving & lives in the suburbs with relatively mild weather i suppose they're phenomenal. That said my crosstrek gets 420 to 440 on a tank of gas (15 gallons) and costs $15,000 less. I don't see a benefit if you're commute is 100 miles a day or longer trips are required.

I originally had the Solterra on reserve. I had to cancel due to the embarrassing recall on potential front wheels coming off when bard braking and/or making sharp turns. In a way, I was glad I did cancel out. I reserved it in February 2022 and had to cancel in September. I went and bought a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 limited AWD. The range was 266 miles and dc rapid charge from 10 to 80% in less than 20 minutes. Subaru range was 222 and took almost an hour to dc rapid charge. I make trips from Baltimore to New York often. The solterra will take forever. I have taken the Hyundai Ioniq 5 from Baltimore to New York twice. Where I was going was 210 miles. The range was 320 on a full charge when I left Baltimore. I had about 89 miles of range left when I went to the dc charging station in Elizabeth New Jersey with 20 miles to go to my destination in New York. If the Solterra had a range of 300 miles and a rapid dc charging time of less than 30 minutes, I would've considered it in a heartbeat. THE ELECTRIC RANGE AND DC RAPID CHARGING TIME FOR THE SUBARU SOLTERRA IS WAY OUT IN LEFT FIELD. I believe, they missed the boat. Unfortunately, Subaru entered the EV market late. Not competitive at all !!!

When I think Subaru, I think long road trips in the wilderness, etc. I just think that this is really not Subaru's thing, and the fact they had Toyota make it so that the US would get off their backs is another thing. My local dealer says they haven't sold many at all. Also, "saving the environment", electric cars involve lithium mining, plus eventually when these cars die and end up in the junkyard, eventually it may be a case of "we wish we hadn't".

I have a Solterra and go on road trips. Now that DC fast charging is no longer penalised after just 2 charges (now being 3.86) by the battery management system, road trips are no longer problematic for me; I have done two recently using DC fast charging. The range at 80% charge is 320 km. The vehicle is especially great for shorter more local distances, (for example upto 300 km there and back). Home charging of course being a must. Great car.

88 is "pretty war"? That's cool in Arizona. I don't turn on ac to full until it's over 105. 88, my windows are down. If it's cold out, it's not the climate control that kills your eco, it's the climate effect on the batt cells.

I drive long distances, so until I can get 500 miles and full recharge in less than an hour, an electric car is of no value to me. My 2023 Outback Touring XT is perfect.

It's not 500 miles of range, but an Ioniq 5 can charge from 10-80% in 18 mins at a 350kw charger and probably about 25-30 mins on less powerful charger. And you get about 300 miles of range. After 300 miles you want to get out and stop for a break anyways. Hopefully Subaru gets a better battery and charging system in their next refresh.

@Ben Wolk Ionic 5 is lucky to get 220-250 miles of range at highway speeds, temperature control on, radio on. But we all drive differently. What works for me is just my way. Once Elon builds that 1 square mile solar plant, and we get better batteries, the equation will skew more towards EV for me. I'm putting solar panels and power wall on my house.

This car stacks up great against the older EV's (Chevy Bolt or Nissan Leaf plus) the problem is that it cost a lot more. It's priced like a Tesla, Ford, Hyundai (ionic 5 & 6), Kia EV6 etc, but it was built to compete with cars that are being discontinued. Subaru and Toyota missed the mark with this platform 🤦‍♂️.

Alex, I love your Subaru videos and just bought two 23 Ascent Touring SUVs for myself and my wife here in Jacksonville, FL from Subaru of Jacksonville that is a great dealership. That said, the Solterra is one of the worst EVs on the market and does not even qualify for the $7,500 tax credit as it's made in Japan. 223 miles of range is half what most gas tanks do so the range is terrible. Also, the regular house charging is very slow. I would recommend the level two charger for sure but the range needs to be doubled to 400 miles per tank and Subaru needs to use the Tesla charging port for fast charging on the road. Great videos!

The charging speed really hasn't been an issue for me. I have a L2 in my home, and it charges in about 9 hours which is fine for me. We charge at home 90% of the time and most of our weekend trips are within 200 miles round trip, so range hasn't been an issue at all. On our longer trips, we charge every 150-180 miles which coincides well with our normal pace of bathroom/stretch breaks. We just plug in at a L3 charger, refresh our beverages and the charge is almost finished. If anything, it's helped make the trips less stressful when we take these breaks. While I'd like a longer range as well, I don't think it will be that much of an issue when more charging stations are available.

There is no state in the US where using an EV is worse for the environment over a 5 year span. Maybe you should do more research than typing your thoughts into Google and looking for validation. Try using Google with a search term like “electricity generation sources by state” to check on your state and see. The grid gets cleaner every day as more and more coal plants are shut down.

If you are comparing building an EV versus building a gas car then you are right in saying that an EV uses more resources because of the battery. However, that is more than made up for over the lifespan of using the vehicle. There are many companies announcing battery factories in the US which significantly lowers that impact. This is the early days of EVs and they will be improving quickly. Let’s not go back to the days of leaded gasoline poisoning an entire generation, but forward to zero emissions from tailpipes so we can all breath easier.

These are not better for the environment. When they catch on fire, how many more gallons does it take to possibly put this out? So is wasting that water good for the environment? They can’t put it out so they have to use foam, or they let it burn out that is also great for the air right? How is lithium obtained? Have you looked into that? What happens in about 7 to 10 years when supposedly they will be recycled? There are more things here that will show overtime they are not the savior of environmental issues. It’s just what woke culture wants to believe, feed the itchy ears so to speak. How are all the EVs working out there in California? And when a storm hits they can’t charge them, also, they have to go ahead and be told not to charge them during the summertime because The electric grid cannot handle that type of output. This is just not a good idea. Shouldn’t be pushed on anyone and according to Bidens plan, what’s the percentage of gas to electric?? So the country’s grid will handle all of this right? Best to ask some residents in California how that’s working out. Just should be a choice not an all right change. This will not end well. I will say this, I like the Subaru ev over Tesla.

I am australian and just compare paying 40k for a subaru impreza with 80k subaru Ev. With an everage 12000km travel distance a year. A subaru impreza cost 7.2l / km that means total cost of fuel a year for subaru impreza is 1728 aud ( 2$/ 1 litre of fuel ). So it takes 23 years for a Subaru Ev get money back comparing to petrol vehicle 😅. Good investment 👍
