Nice explanation on brakes. One thing I have learned from the mechanics I have shadowed is that much of the noise from brakes come from the back of the pads (vibrating on the piston). So they put brake grease (lightly) on the back plates of the pads. Some mechanics us a special adhesive glue. It was good you explained about the caliper pin lubing at the end. In my experience it is very important!

A lot of the newer disc brakes can be handled with only a shim behind the pad, which is a lot less messy. :) But, I've also seen newer cars, with new pads...and the only way to keep them quiet is to put some 'disc quiet' behind the pads. Thanks for sharing such valuable information, my breaks are working fine but I went for a preventive break check, although there is no squeaking or wobbling while braking but they say “although 5mm brakes are remaining but its better to change the rotors and brake pads. Asking for $450 for replacing both.

Good video but I recommend taking both bolts out then checking and servicing the sliding pins at the same time. I learnt my lesson cos I neglected to check my slider pins and my left upper one had seized. Well after I put the new pads, I thought everything was fine until I took the vehicle for a short test drive and found the left rotor was smoking and much hotter than the other side (the right slider pins were fine). I thought it was the caliper piston which seized but long story short, after freeing the stuck pin and relubed it, was the problem fixed. It was quite a feat freeing the stuck pin cos it was really stuck fast and I had to spend hours whacking it to get it loose. I also strongly recommend testing the wheel after installation and the tires put back on, that the tires are rotating freely after the brake pedal is released. THIS IS IMPORTANT! COS STUCK PADS GENERATE TONS OF HEAT WHICH WILL WARP THE ROTORS AND DAMAGE THE WHEEL BEARINGS. IT COULD EVEN CAUSE THE TIRES TO CATCH FIRE IF THE PROBLEM WASNT CAUGHT EARLY AND THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN A LONG DISTANCE. Also, these are several signs that a stuck slider pin might cause which I noticed but failed to pinpoint. I only realised it was the same problem until much later: 1. Mushy brake pedal. Only the pad on the piston side is pressing against the rotor, the other side isnt or only partially. 2. The car doesnt seem to brake efficiently and you just have to press the pedal almost all the way to the floor. 3. The caliper body becomes difficult to put back into place after installing the new thicker pads. 4. Uneven wear on the pads from the same rotor.

i admire how you have the correct name for the brake system. especially the one called squealer. i made the mistake of putting on squealers on both sides of each pad. maybe it was not a good idea as it could keep brake pads from sliding freely.

No sir, the emergency brake only affects the rear brakes, so no worries on the front. Any time you have the car jacked up, make sure you have the wheels chocked and/or the emergency brake set. Man you must be in California or someplace that's never seen salt. I have the same model year Camry as you and it was alllllll rusted to hell. Had to use a steel brush to clean the surface off before they accepted the clips.

I just replaced my front break pads for the same reason (squealing) but now the new once squealing too and getting hot. Is this normal at first?

Thanks for watching! It should not be squealing with new pads and also should not be getting hot unless you have just applied the brakes. I suggest taking it apart again and making sure the pads are not bound up. The surfaces that the pad ears ride on should be fairly clean, free of excessive rust etc, so the pads can move along those surfaces. If all that is ok, you may have a bad caliper. I've had to replace calipers that would expand but fail to retract, so the brakes stayed under pressure. Let me know if I can help.

Thank you for watching! You can definitely put the brake lube on the back plate. The area I live in is very mild with no rust issues, etc, so it really isn't necessary here. In harsher environments, it is advised.

Thanks for watching, Bunmi! Take off one of the wheels....you can see the lining on the brake pads with the wheel off. The lining is the part that contacts the brake rotor. If there's less than 1/8" (3mm) of lining left, you should replace the brake pads. You can do it sooner if you like, but don't let them get any thinner than 1/8".

It depends a lot on what type pads you install, how you drive and your driving conditions. I'd guess you should expect anywhere from 40,000 miles to 75,000 miles from a set of pads.

Good catch Joseph! Actually the pads that were on there were crap, they squealed like 15 pigs, so I replaced them with higher quality pads. Stopped the squealing. :)

Some high temp grease on the back of pad (between pad and the thin plate) helps with reducing the squeal.

I'll need more info to help you.....the parking brake won't affect the front rotors. Are you working on the front brakes or the rear brakes? Have you removed the caliper? If the front brakes, have you removed the outer bearing?
