Toyota Celica RA40 Rally Car with Ben Mellors

Another video from the excellent Goodwood Speedweek. This time we caught up with Ben Mellors to have a chat about his Toyota Celica RA40 rally car. A regular on the stages where it gets driven hard, as can be seen with the on board at the end of the video. A rare car and an interesting choice for a rally build, we think you'll agree.

Similar rally Celicas with round headlights i believe won championships in Portugal. My first car was the 1981 GT 22R motor , front air scoop, rear louvres and wing. I still proudly own my baby!❤

152E TRD Race Engine. I own 9 of these engines including the IMSA Celica GTU engine and the DOME twin turbo engine. One of these engines is in my 1973 Toyota TE27 Corolla Levin rally car. Amazing power output!

Superb! Many years ago in NZ, I owned a mint 1981JDM RA45 with 18R-GEU + W50 - it's the car I most regret selling.

Yeah, I had an RA 29 mustang-esque Celica with the modded 18RG you know, home made header, Dellortos, HKS 288 intake cam, stock 4-bbl 273 smallblock V8 Chrysler pistons and reworked 1.88" intake valves with BMW valve springs and new but lightened 22R flywheel with its new but stock bolts. What a delight to rev and drive. 9k in the first two gears, top speed from 121mph stock in fourth to 133mph in fifth at 8k rpm on little 225/50-13 tires. My my, 38 years has passed already and so quick!

I saw this rally and this car got absolutely no love from the folks at Goodwood it only got shown for a total of 5 seconds but it did very well during the entire series.
