Here in this video I am going to set the tappets gap for Toyota Corolla. Same technique could be applied to most vehicles. Such video is not available on youtube.

Thanks and congrats for the video. I have an Toyota Fielder AT 2006 1zz-fe 1.8 16v, I got the car with 39000 km and now it's about 80.000. I usually don't speed that much on the highway but first, when I got the car it would do 180 km/h easily, now, downhill it suffers to do that. I keep the maintenance in order, oils, filters, car alignment and balancing, tire pressure etc. I really don't know what could be the problem. The only thing I have not done is the valve gap.

+Rodrigo Rocha Thanks dear friend for liking video. You may subscribe the channel to get valuable informational videos time to time. Also for your case you may investigate your car issue with more detailed inspection. All of a sudden don't jump to valve adjustment as it is a difficult job and should not be done if not required. You may watch my other uploaded one series of videos in Jul 2015 four parts series on one Toyota Corolla diagnostic. There I showed how to test for possible valve adjustment from outside using a pressure gauge. Hope that video series will help you pinpoint your problem. Regards,

I had to do this on a 3.0 v6. It had shims on top of the lifter. Only problem I can see grinding the underside of that lifter is if you grind to much the bucket lifter could push on the valve retainer.

I have a 2006 Corolla. When the AC compressor cycles off and the engine idle speed slows down one of the valves taps louder than the rest. So for this problem I need a new bucket? Should I be worried that one valve is wearing faster than the others? And by the way, I've never seen a Corolla with a manual transmission and no rev counter? Maybe only left hand drive models are like that. All Corolla's in New Zealand are right hand drive.
@JahanZeb19769 жыл бұрын
+KiwiPowerNZ Tappets are problematic when you get low power situation. Noise is common with them. There is a worry when your car is going low power due to tappets then all the show procedure is a must to do. Here Toyota Corolla is very common with manual transmission and they are very successful models as well due to their simplicity and durability. Anyhow both AT and MT models are available.

LearningZone Mine is a 2006 5 speed Manual hatchback. It's done 287,000km but less than about 5,000 since I've owned it. I've changed the oil once (I used Castrol Magnatec 10W-40) and the brake pads. I change the cabin air filter and the engine air filter. I don't think my engine is loosing power it accelerates much quicker than that car did at the end of the video. I often drive that fast, shhh.

@JahanZeb19769 жыл бұрын
zx8401ztv Your understanding is right dear sir. The gap had been ruined due to head went under values job by someone. Normally people are grinding values using grinding paste when they are replacing head gasket and they forget to check the tappets gap in the end. Also as the values are located in hot chamber and they are under elongation stress due to springs, this is another reason for ruining the gap. Gap in tappets is important to make sure enough compression in the engine.

@JahanZeb19764 жыл бұрын
It needs to scan the car on a good scanner or scan tool. Look for any codes present. Repair as needed. The next step could be looking into live data on scanner. Fuel trims, maf sensor and oxygen sensor data pids. If you get some abnormal reading. Next step if you don't find anything bad in data pids, could be to check fuel pressure, fuel injectors operation, ignition coils performance or any false air entery in the engine from the air intake. Also you may consider cat converter cleaning. Next to it could be the engine compression. The list may become larger and larger. So you may perform these tasks first and the comment me here latter on. Stay tuned and connected.

No way these valve buckets should be grind....these are case hardened ....means only the outer layer is hard....these must be replace ..... toyota sell these valve buckets seperatelly in different sizes...further more these buckets revolve with every single rev of cam shaft....grinding them means u deform there shape and they might not revolve with cam loop....this is just a temperory fix ....

In the manual sais 0.15-0.25mm for Intake & 0.25-0.35mm for Exhaust but you use 0.3&0.2 why ?
@JahanZeb19766 жыл бұрын
Same I presented here in this video what you stated. 0.2mm for intake valve and 0.3mm for exhaust valve. So such clearances are in very much midrange as you stated from Toyota manual. Thanks for pointing. Stay tuned. Regards,
@akchristian47156 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply ! Now i get it ! I did mine two days ago using a 0.15 feeler gauge for intake and 0.25 for exhaust , it worked fine for the minimum mm stated by Toyota but in both situations i was not able to slide the max of 0.25 for intake and 0.35 for exhaust .. is that ok ?? Do i need to readjusting them using 0.20 for intake and 0.30 for exhaust ?0_0 Thanks!
@JahanZeb19766 жыл бұрын
No dear friend it is not that critical. Hope what you have done, will do nicely. This adjustment should be closer to the standard at stone cold engine. It shouldn't be way too different otherwise it could loose engine power. Hope you may get nice rides on you car! Regards and stay tuned.

Bad idle is due to dirty throttle body. Clean you car throttle body will solve idle running defect. If you want to attempt it yourself, I have videos on my channel to to it step by step. Low power issue could be something else to address or may be it could be due to poor idling.

This method is bad, because the surfaces of the tappets are hardened and grinding them destroy the hardened layer - so this improvement for a short time..
@JahanZeb19766 жыл бұрын
OK can you tell us or provide us a video of good method? You comment shows that you commented on the basis of your observation. Even what you stated is not complying with the theory of hard surface grinding! Think and you will find me right. Regards,

Best method is naturally buying original tappets - there is no problem for japanese cars all over the world! I appreciate your initiative, but after thinking I stated that this may be a short-term solution, and this method of regulation is too time-consuming to repeat it often ... Cheers!
@JahanZeb19766 жыл бұрын
It might not needed to repeat again for many cars I did the process. This is a standard procedure adapted by many experts. Sure new parts are always nice if they are available for you and your client may afford new parts price which is not always the case.

@JahanZeb19767 жыл бұрын
Sure you need adjustment because there are are small errors in parts like values, seats and cams. Those errors need adjustment and correction. The company is giving correction by putting different size of buckets having different numbers after assembling and doing measurements. So they are doing the same way as I have shown in this video but they are not going for machining instead they are putting different size of buckets as they have plenty of buckets on factory floor.

+LearningZone, Dear Jahanzeb, the 3ZZ-Fe in my corolla often experiences a knocking noise when the car is cruising at 2000rpm. It is only at 2000rpm that i notice the knocking. I have browsed through other youtube videos and the noise do sound like a rod knock. What could be the possible causes to this? The owner manual states that knocking can be heard on and off sometimes for the engine so is there any concern? Thank you
@JahanZeb19769 жыл бұрын
+happily1986 Dear friend thanks for subscription. It sounds like some bearing sound from somewhere outside or inside the engine. You may check it carefully from where it is coming. If it is somewhere from outside the engine, it could be an easy fix like an idler, tensioner, alternator bearing or air conditioner pulley bearing. Sometimes it is coming of the inside of the engine and can be a crank bearing or camshaft bearings. In such a case it needs a big and serious repair. Wish you good luck with your repair. Keep in touch and inform about your success.
