Great video. Cracked up when you dropped the sprocket twice!! Correct thickness of replacement shim is N=T+(A-V) where T is the thickness of the old shim, A is the valve clearance measured, N is the thickness of the new shim and V is the desired valve clearance

My experience with Toyota lifters is that a magnet is very helpful. The lifter buckets on my 1uz are aluminum while the shims are steel. This means you can pull the lifter as a unit or just the lifter depending on how you use your magnet. Be very careful not to scratch the shim when removing it from the magnet. I found a small amount of motor oil to be helpful with this. Hope this helps!

Uhm...I thought checking the valve cleance requires 1) cold engine; 2) timing set to 0 and both valves loose; 3) stick feeler gauge under the lobe and above the lifter to measure any gap. Measuring the shim does not check the gap.

Look this is not a very good video to explain how to do the shims on a Toyota 1992 to 2002 twin cam motor. You do not have to remove the cams just to replace the shims in this motor. Measure the back of the cam lobe to the original old shim. Work out what shim size you need. Use a shim bucket depressor tool to take the old shim out and to put the new shim in. Release the shim bucket depressor tool off the cam shaft and use it on the next shim bucket. Do this with all the valve shims and the motor is good to go. Do not use a round pick to get the old shims out as this never works, instead use a very small thin bladed screw driver and this will work every time. To do this job just take take the spark plugs out then the valve cover off and go ahead turning the cam shafts around with a spanner on the tool flats cast onto the cam shafts. Turn the cam shafts and do the shims as you go. It is very easy to do. You do not have to take any thing apart to do this job.

Man absolute trash. Doing this on my Camry right now. I come from the honda world where valve adjustments just involve a screw and locking nut. This shim BS is absolutely ignorant. I'm gonna fix this POS and sell this car and move back to honda. Thank GOD it is just my exaust valves that are out of spec. If I had to take the entire cam assembly apart to do a valve adjustment I would shoot myself. I will say that this car has been super reliable, but working on it has been extremely frustrating. Honda makes everything super easy. Everything about this car has been frustrating.
