I was really disappointed in this review. As with any car, the maker decides on how they balance attributes. Toyota, to their credit, have nailed this for the average car buyer who wants to own something that doesn't look like a bread bin, drives decently, is reliable, and has an adequate level of tech and practicality. Ginny - your bias this time was a shocker. You can't benchmark everything against a Jag or BMW.

Dear Ginny. Grumbling about the "CVT gearbox" makes clear that you have no idea what you're talking about. Toyota Hybrids have a so called "e-CVT". A very confusing name for a Power Split Device, or PSD. The PSD is a planetary gear set that removes the need for a traditional stepped gearbox and transmission components. It ACTS as a continuously variable transmission (CVT) but with a fixed gear ratio, explained in many, many videos on the internet. Check it out! And don't forget to watch a few more videos, titled "how to drive a hybrid". ☻☻☻
@johnkeepin7527
@johnkeepin7527 5 жыл бұрын
The term used by Toyota is "hybrid synergy drive (HSD)". the 'e' side of it is fixed gear ratio between the traction motor and the drive shafts, but the engine side IS continuously variable gear ratio between the engine and the drive shafts, via a clever planetary gear set with a variable frequency ac motor/alternator (which also does away with conventional alternators and starter motors) on it's 'Sun'. Often, during rapid acceleration, the engine runs at almost constant speed while the car accelerates. Takes a bit of learning to get the best out of it, especially to get the best out of it's regen braking, but it's fine. The one I run is actually the Yaris hybrid, but I think they're all similar from this perspective. Interesting to see what the replacement for the Auris is like, though.
@joseluislopes3956
@joseluislopes3956 5 жыл бұрын
@@johnkeepin7527 no, toyota uses the name e-CVT. HSD is the name of the drive train technology, which is the suvessor of Toyota Hybrid System (THS), not the transmission type.

I'm about to buy one, and have also tried the Focus, the Ceed, Civic, Leon and Mazda 3. They all have their pros and cons and it's always about what YOU prefer, but in my opinion the Corolla is a much better car than what's portrayed here. The infotainment software is indeed completely dated, but it works well, is simple to use and it has physical buttons which I find to be a plus, (and right now it has android auto and apple car play), the backup camera resolution is poor and doesn't have adaptive lines like the competition, but it does the job and rear and boot space aren't that good. I think the interior quality is pretty good. Not mercedes like, but for the most part you get good material quality, the seats are confortable and supportive and the interior is nicely insulated. Even the harder plastics (that you mostly find on the bottom half of the car) aren't the worst and everything feels solid, robust and nicely put together. It's one of the few cars in its class to have multilink rear suspension as standard (not even the A-class has it) and that's what makes it quite confortable (also depending on rim size) and yet still very nice to drive with a rather sporty feel. (it comes with a lot of kit and specially safety gear for its price) It is by no means a performance car (specially with this engine) but in town and at lower speeds it feels nippy and agile due to its electrical engine. If you don't drive it like a performance car the cvt works fine. If you do it gets a bit noisy and clunky but not too bad. If you drive it at relatively constant and not very high speeds it does the job nicely even on longer runs. Everything from the power plant to the cvt is meant to lower consumption. This car, with this engine, only makes sense if you do most of your driving in town. Otherwise, the two liter is a better choice. Either way if you do most of your driving on the highway or country roads, it'll make more use of the petrol engine and less of electrical power, you won't get the most of the consumptions it can do. In conclusion, if you're mainly after performance, space or a very good infotainment system, this is not the car for you. If this is not the case, it deserves a test drive and if you're after a quality product that is safe, confortable (and still good to drive) and reliable with low consumptions and running costs this might just be the car for you. (design and looks are always subjective but i like it)

I believe that the lack of Android Auto/Apple Carplay is due to a licensing dispute (how much these companies want to charge Toyota to use it in their UK vehicles) and that once resolved, these apps will be installed at no-cost during a routine service by the dealer. Both apps are now available in USA Corollas.

If you want a trouble free car ( who doesn’t ?) it’s Toyota all the way. They build their cars to be reliable for a long time Not just the first three years of your ownership ;when they pay for repair under the warranty. My four year old Golf Gti mk7 has just had its turbo replaced at £2500. Only done 40k miles . It was a plastic bit in the turbo that failed . VW used to make the part out of metal (therefore reliable) but changed to plastic to save a euro . I don’t like the look of the ice or cvt but will test the bigger engined Toyota as fed up with European cars .

The garage I take my car to has said the VW / Audi car's gearboxes rarely last beyond 60 to 70K miles, due to using softer metal than the much older ones did. So added to this the use of plastic instead of metal, which BMW are also guilty of doing then you have a money pit of a car.

Unfortunately, the infotainment system is as outdated as the exterior is futuristic, but compare a CVT to other automatic transmissions, because it works totally different! Another great review, can you add a decent test of safety tech to your reviews please ? Its an ever changing area that makes new car purchasing difficult as the tech differs so much (and the dealers waffle about) - active cruise as an example - many have it, but only some you can use in city stop start traffic and it does it for you (we all must want that) but no reviewers tell us much or show us really ? My drives normally involve tons of city traffic, so however much I would love to chuck my car around and experience the amazing handling it may have, the reality is, I am sitting in a queue waiting for a red light to change :( ........ handling has gone totally from my choice of next car must haves, its irrelevant now in the real world most of the time, unless you live out-of-town in Wales or Scotland. So many reviews show us a 0-60 or a swift blast around a country lane (or the track you all use), but a quiet, comfortable car that takes a lot out of stop start traffic would be a god sent to me - I will sacrifice some country carving for it !

Well done for a poor review of a superbly designed and engineered car! It’s sold so much because you journalists aren’t in touch with real peoples’ wants and needs. Infotainment is good, cvt is just fine as I love it’s ease of use, steering is wonderfully light, handling is a pleasure, performance is good because I don’t want to drive a sports car. You’re not reviewing a sports car but a really desirable compact family car. BTW how on earth can you say the doors don’t open wide enough when it’s plainly obvious they do! Get real woman!

The new Toyota Prius PHEV is the plug-in hybrid version that is heading to Europe. It’s the first time the 2.0-litre engine has been combined with a plug-in hybrid setup, delivering 223PS and 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds. This makes it the fastest Toyota Prius ever.And to cap it off it isn't going to the UK,I get the impression Toyota really hate the UK!

i think the "don't put cups in the cupholder, only bottles thing" is pretty obvious to me, if you put a cup and then close the door, the cup would spill all over the place. The bottle would not.

I have the Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE and its amazing!! small cars are obviously not family cars, you want more space get an RV or Minivan, you are super tall then get a truck, it comes with apple car play, it will charge android and apple phones, cupholders are always recomendable to not place hot cups in the case of an accident. I really don’t know what is lady saying. Trashing a car that is really amazing.

Gets a sterling review on the website yet when I clicked the link to the video review it’s nearing on the side of complete negativity 🤔🤔 At least be consistent between the two 🤷🏼‍♂️ and as for the e-cvt is certainly isn’t an issue especially in the 2.0.

It has no CVT. Toyota calls it an eCVT but it's really a planetary gear set. Yes it's continuously variable but else it has nothing to do with a classical CVT with belt or a chain. Also Android Auto and AppleCarPlay are available in all models built from 2020 on.

This one doesn't have a clue. Car looks great inside & out, it has apple & android play. Cvt is not an issue if u drive it like a normal person and not an f1 driver. Touch screen works perfect I'm a fan of buttons ,it's strate forward and works well. The new corolla is getting great reviews from a lot of other reviewers across the globe. Don't know what she's on about..

It comes with Apple CarPlay standard in the States... they haven’t allowed android yet cuz they have violated Toyota’s privacy policy. Toyota doesn’t like how much android tracks and sells and distributed peoples information, so they have yet to come to an agreement with google.

Pointing out negatives in a car does not equate to “bad review”. Better to learn about them now rather than find out after you’ve paid for it! Ginny also mentioned the positives so a buyer can make an informed choice. I love the car I drive now but if asked I will not hesitate in pointing out the plethora of negative things about it so anyone wishing to buy one will be fully aware beforehand

Obviously the lady didn't like it much. Shame as lots people are ignoring her, most reviews I've seen and read are far more complementary. And as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and this car is selling like hot cakes in the UK. Try ordering one now and you'll be given a lead time of 3 to 4 months due to the numbers of orders in the system.
