Toyota Corolla is called the Corolla again. For two generations European spec compact hatchback and estate model was called Toyota Auris, because it was allegedly more hip like that. Now we are back to the Toyota Corolla. It comes in hatchback, estate, and sedan versions. There is a choice of a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, or two types of hybrid drivetrain.
Starting price: 22 200 euro

How come every time someone reviews a Toyota product it’s always sarcastic and nit-picky. It’s a little annoying. Like do we really have to state in every review that a Corolla won’t get your pulse racing? How about the part where the car is attractive, efficient, spacious, and loaded with tech. This car does everything right. Some cars may be better and some specific things, but the Corolla is a great car nonetheless.

@Cecil L the car is not spacious, if a 1,85 or 1,90 m tall person touch the roof at the back seat and doesn't get his feet comfortably unter the front seat, and this at the big lenght of the car! No electric sockets for the back seats passengers, no seperat climat zone there, old stylish sat nav, no android auto, etc., no fuel consuption around 4,5 Liter = loaded with tech? And in an estate(!) not many storage places for little things when you travel e.g. with family/kids? I would say: this car is outdated.

Another great review Marek. Well done mate! I had a look at the Corolla when I was buying a new car and it surprised me that the much smaller Yaris had better leg room. I'm 183 cm tall and I just couldn't sit behind the driver's seat. The biggest problem was foot room actually. I kept tripping on the front seat when trying to get in or out. If you're looking for more passenger room, the Corolla isn't worth the price difference from the Yaris.

I just picked up the same model for a test drive today. Honestly i drive hybrid for the first time ever. After a couple of hours i can say that it definitely feels better than the Golf Variant ( which i also tested recently) looks better than most of the competitors in the class and is easy to get use to with. And at some point is getting even boring i dare to say. But for this price range Corolla gives you more value for the money. And they say it is more reliable than the german and french colleagues. Just came back from a Toyota dealer. After driving RAV4 and Camry, I must admit the Corolla was a very nice surprise. There's a lot of "toyotisms" everywhere but Corolla offers the most pleasant combination of all. And the suspension is actually very good. Camry was a total disappointment, RAV is okay-ish, Corolla is rather great (out of those three) in all aspects. And I say that as a live-long BMW fan/user and petrolhead :). Btw: the USB port is a prep for Apple CarPlay and Andoid support, which is coming as of beginning of October. With a completely new infotainment graphic and OS (finally!).

Thanks for this review. Your humor would go well in a classic British comedy film. In spite of its minor shortcomings I would like to have one of these with the 1.8 engine. Unfortunately, Toyota will not offer this in North America or even some other countries where it ought to be successful. I have driven several Prius and Corolla models over the years and they are all fairly loud when above 100 kph. Worst noise is when you need power from the engine......what a racket.....20 pounds of sound insulation would help. I'm sure the car would pass the crash test with a USB cord plugged in. Where was the Corolla in this test built? Looking forward to your review of the Gen 8 Golf and VW EV when they are available. 🙂

Wife has rav4 hybrid. Setting car to Eco mode and using active cruise control returns the best mpg. 5.5l/100km is what we can achieve in rav4. I drove new 2023 corolla hybrid recently. Lovely handling car. I'm in vw Golf at moment. 2023 corolla impressed me. Where I am. Luna entry model has no lumbar support. Need to look at SOL model for lumbar support. I love diesel but vw starting to reduce diesel options. In Ireland new vw t-roc dsg can can only be got in petrol form. Doing my maths, tank size and reported real life mpg and cost of fuel I think hybrid makes financial sense. Toyota offering auto gearbox at cheaper rates than other brands. Couple things I can update for potential buyers 1.8 sports tourer: -eco mode is good for icy conditions as the throttle has a more soft acceleration even if you floor it, The hybrid system works well with this option. -try sports mode if you want that race feeling. -Android and apple is available now -from my Toyota dealer the efficiency is 30% less fuel so it's no miracle solution however they also warned that it can be very thirsty more than petrol if you drive like an idiot -i had a 2012 seat Ibiza smal hatchback and compare to my corolla which is a family car I saved about 45 euros in petrol same distance.

Decent and honest review although agreed it was a bit 'nit-picky'. No car company should be producing new diesel cars these days - it's good that Toyota has avoided diesel with the new Corolla. There are also too few estate cars and too many SUVs, which not everyone wants! The world needs more sensible and environmentally kinder transportation.

As for fuel economy 6 liter / 100 km is pretty decent for a 180 hp petrol powered car. The only reason diesels are cheaper to run in Europe, is because diesel fuel is getting subsidiced by being taxed less than petrol. A liter of diesel contain more energy and emit more CO2 than a liter of petrol, so with fair pricing diesel would cost 10-15% more than petrol, in which case nobody would complain about 6 liter / 100 km for a petrol car. Also the base model hybrid is more economical. I rented the old model recently for a 1-day trip and got less than 5 liter / 100 km with a lot of motorway driving and no particular effort to drive efficiently.

This would be impressive, if I wasn't going 110-120. I wasn't using the power. At that speed a diesel car would use even less.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 5 жыл бұрын
Diesel fuel is not subsidised. In the UK it has been up to 10p/litre more expensive than petrol for many years. Only in the last three weeks has the price gap narrowed to around 2p/litre, again with petrol remaining cheaper. Also diesel cars have been up to £2000 more expensive than more powerful, though traditionally less torquey petrol engines. Despite this and the more expensive servicing and potential repair cost, diesel cars took around half the market until those immoral thieving crooks at VW broke the law and cheated and devalued every diesel car worldwide, literally robbing owners of cash.

Perhaps Toyota should offer the option of the 2.0 non-hybrid but a high percentage of EU market prefers economical engines. Fuel is expensive and taxes increase as power and size increase. If you have plenty of money expenses may not matter, but if I had to drive lots of km or miles in EU I would prefer high efficiency engine. Still gets you from A to B.
@ShatNdd
@ShatNdd 5 жыл бұрын
@@rizzlerazzleuno4733 not everybody does high travel distances. For example if you drive only 15000km/year and real world fuel consumption difference might be only 3 liters/100km. So the the difference in fuel might be ~35-40 litres per month. And ~100 €/year for CO2 emissions tax difference. And a car purchase price could be less for around 4000€ (hybrid vs. manual) with the same engine, body type and trim level. This is 15-20% difference! This difference will become zero-profitable after 80-100 000km (~6 years) and only after you will save some money if you won't have any issues with hybrid. I would definitely prefer non-hybrid 2.0 manual if I could choose!

The complaint about Japanese cars from European car journalists was always that they were too focused on being practical, stodgy to drive with ugly utilitarian interiors and boring exteriors. Toyota and Mazda have turned this completely around, but have created attractive drivable cars with tiny boots and cramped rear space.
