This was a fascinating video! I am disappointed with Toyota for making a headlight assembly in which the low beam cannot be accessed. To me, this is an engineering boondoggle! Thanks for a great video.

The only way to make led headlights lights reliable is to seal it from the elements, put a giant heatsink on it and use a flux led. Consider how much goes into that low beam shell vs an aftermarket led bulb. They have all the same components but the Toyota one is built like a tank

Yes it's a sickness but only for non mechanics. For mechanics they are life savers when you have your own inventory in stock for a broken or missing part. A used OE part is better than a broken part. And definitely better than a missing one. Fasteners are expensive and they add up!!

Sometimes, it's better just to stick to tried and cheaper tech like halogen bulbs. My 89 uses a $10 headlight bulb that I've only had to change about every ten years.

Not nearly as bright. So it’s better in one sense-cost, no other.

Great video, thanks! 2014 Corolla owner. I figured that there was some lenses and magnification shenanigans going on to make a tiny LED shine so intensely, and this breakdown answered my question. I'm going to guess it needs such a huge heat sink because the assembly with the LED is (supposed to be) completely sealed. No air cooling. Even though LEDs don't throw much heat, it could get pretty hot in there.

I don’t understand why they had to put the electronic computer part inside the headlight instead of under the hood? I still remember the good old days when you could buy a new headlight for less than $10.00.

A $1200 10-year/100k service agreement from Midwest Toyota in Kansas is an even a better deal with difficult-to-replace headlights. All the computerized stuff is justification enough for the VSA.
@konradhittner46688 ай бұрын
As impressively complex as that headlight assembly is, a complete, lifetime-warranty replacement (Toyocera, a very high-quality Taiwanese aftermarket producer) is $144 at RockAuto. But your dealer’s finance manager does thank you for spending your “peace-of-mind” dollars with them.

The headlight power module can be repaired. It looks as though there is conformal coating on the PC board. That coating protects the board and components from moisture. Thanks for the video.

I wanted LED lights on my 2016 Sienna but halogen lights came standard, interestingly enough my headlight assembly looks identical to this minus the driver electronics, I upgraded the bulbs to aftermarket LED for most of the lights, including a white/ yellow fog set up. I’m happy with my setup, especially now after seeing what the price of this was.

I have a hi tech way of preventing this moisture from building up in this enclosure. Drill a smallish hole in the bottom, and if you can another hole in a sheltered position above it. This will enable the light to drain and dry with the heat of the led. Really hi tech but it works.

Correct me if I’m wrong but you should not be able to remove the cover like that without heating up the Butyl rubber that seals the lens to the headlight assembly. 🤷🏻♂️

I have to ask myself is all this irreplaceable technology worth it ? A bulb is pretty easy to replace. This is a $500 part plus labor to order the part, remove and replace. So what $1,000 repair? Never should have gotten rid of my 1970 VW bug…

I found a parts diagram for the led driver in the Japanese version that shows a removable panel at the bottom of the assembly. The drive part is unfortunately about $420 so little savings there, but easier to open than removing the lens.

Seems to me this is a complex solution for a low beam head light. Toyota needs to use a bulb and develope plastic lens that don’t fade or try glass. Just saying.
@SoumenMittraАй бұрын
If this was just water damage and possible to fix by drying out the equipment they why didn’t you give that option to the customer. Wouldn’t it be cheaper than buying a new headlight assembly. Did you acquire consent from your customer to keep the old equipment. In many states it is a law to allow customers to keep the replaced parts.
@geoffwalker75308 ай бұрын
So much complication and expense and end result is drivers complaining about being dazzled and generally lights being way too bright. There was never a problem with simple halogen or even tungsten bulbs so lighting has made negative progress in 40 years
@johns68168 ай бұрын
What Crap! So a simple broken headlight assembly is $500? Conservative frugal hard working folks drive Corollas because they are economical. So maybe Toyota is not such a thoughtful manufacturer after all. This is no better than some of Ford's BS.

So, the low beam "bulb" is $500. Toyota quality? I love my Toyotas; but they use real light bulbs not the integrated LED garbage that cannot be repaired, only replaced. Come on Toyota don't go down GM's road.
