Toyota Epic Ski Boat (Epic 22). Toyota made these high quality inboard boats from the 1999 to 2002 model years. They made both an open bow direct drive (shown here) and a V-drive. They also made a 21 foot closed bow direct drive boat. While the boats had different hulls, they all featured a twin double overhead cam Lexus 300 H.P. V-8. Toyota was really a boutique builder and they sold about 400-500 boats in North America during this time, so they could learn the boat market. By 2001, they were ramping up production and had built a factory in Orlando to build them on a larger scale. Then 9/11 occurred and during the resulting recession Toyota reassessed their product mix and discontinued the Epic. These boats are rare and desirable with their advanced engine which is highly fuel-efficient, quiet and reliable.

I've owned two of them and put over 2K hours on them. They totally rock. Big, heavy boat, thick hull. Extremely well put together. The V drive has almost no engine noise, the D drive has a very throaty V8 sound. Both are great.

What was Top speed ? I heard like only 40 -ish mph . Thanks.

Went for a ride in one of these last summer. Very nice boat and a very smooth and different sound from that Lexus motor.

Known to chine lock. The final nail in the coffin: a serious production flaw that required a full recall and replacement of every Epic 21 sold. It seems that Maritec had left the molds for that model in direct sunshine long enough for it to distort the hull, creating a condition called “chine lock,” which occurs when so much turbulent water and air accumulates under a boat’s hull that its chines and rudder can’t get any foothold on the water. As a result, the craft won’t respond to steering inputs while it’s being driven at speed, requiring the pilot to back off the throttle to reposition the boat. Too bad, could have maybe been a great boat to compete with MC and CC.
