I get 21.8 mpg in the summer on premium gas with 265/70 x 17 tires. Even now that gasoline is nearly $2.00 per litre for premium, I still love my 2007 FJ.

Given the upgraded tires / suspension, the fact that the FJ is a brick in the wind, etc. That is really good gas mileage!

16mpg average isnt too bad, but one thing i wish the FJ had was a bigger fuel tank. The 4runner has a 23 gallon tank but the FJs only holds 19 gallons.

Nice test! I have a 2014 FJ stock. So no heavy 33" tires and no heavy front bumper or winch. In the first 3 years of ownership I got 20mpg on regular gasoline. Now in order to get 20mpg I have to use Premium gas. When I use regular gas I'm getting between 17 & 19mpg. So our FJ's either love octane or oil refineries are doing something nasty with the gasoline mix. On a trip through Salt Lake City Utah with 85mph speed zones I was getting 16mpg and going through California & Oregon with 70mph speed zones I was getting 26mpg. Now that I've paid him off I just don't want him to break so far so good.

I have a 2013 Magma Orange FJC. 265/70R17s with silver 5-spoke wheels. Spare tire/OEM roof rack/rock sliders. No bull-bar or any other aftermarket add-on. I'm averaging 22mpg on the interstate and 17-18mpg in city, depending on traffic. No worse than other big SUVs. I'll take it because I knew what I was getting at purchase. Somewhere down the line, I'll invest in a larger gas tank.

Superchargers are more fuel efficient & the V8 has more torque meaning you don't have to give it as much gas to accelerate as with a vehicle with less torque. So not sure what your point is? Personally they should have put the 4.7V8 in the FJ but Toyota is to conservative.

Let me put these numbers into ugly perspective. My car was a 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT8. Full weight, heavy 22" wheels, heavy MDF and fiberglass subwoofer box built into the spare tire well...so similar in weight, probably better aero. The 425 horsepower 6.1 SRT Hemi with intake, cat-back, hotter cam and a performance tune made 23 mpg on flat, level freeway drives at 80mph. Wtff, Toyota?!

That isn't too bad for oversize tires! My parents have a stock 14 4runner and it gets like 18-19. Maybe 21 on the highway at 55. I like my 6.2 f250 but it only gets like 14-15. Worth it for when I haul and move stuff though!

FJ Cruiser is my favourite 4x4. I would rather have an FJ Cruiser over any Landrover or Rangerover. You can still buy them brand new in the Philipinnes built in Japan. I live in Thailand so not available and the import tax is 210% on the cost so we all drive Toyota Hilux Double Cabs - diesel or Toyota Fortuna (simialr to Forrunner) - diesel. The FJ Cruiser with a Toyota 2.8ltr 4 cylinder diesel would be the way to go.
