Had my oil replaced a week ago but now it’s smelling and smoking. Never had that issue in 20 years of owning Hiaces. They apparently used 10w30 synthetic even though I asked them to use 20w40 standard. I will drain it tomorrow and put Valvoline 20W40 in it. I think these older engines might be better off with standard oil, not synthetic. I will leave the filter in place and just replace the oil that comes from the sump drain.

Can you please advise where this model Hiace has the air filter element positioned? Mine is the LH162 diesel SWB van with a 5L 3.0 normal aspiration. Repco have sold me a 'circular' air filter element . . ? ?

FABULOUS vid! Care to show me how to clean out the fuel line and filter - same vehicle? Mine's been sitting for years and although I've made all of the right moves and have gotten it started and running well by introducing gas at the carb, it's not getting any fuel from the tank and won't keep running.
@southerndiy15 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian! The van is owned by a friend and is currently on it’s way around Australia. Does the 2RZ use a mechanical fuel pump in the engine bay or a low pressure electric one in the tank?
@brianrallen5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Southern DIY Thanks for yours. Believe it must be mechanical as in the 30 years (and half-million kilometers) I've had it, I've never heard an electric pump. Online, bought the 1989-2004 Workshop and Service Manual in PDF last night and read it cover-to-cover but not a single word about the fuel system. Weird. But had it running (well) again today but only by pouring a little gas into the carb. Also jacked it, put it on stands, got underneath and believe I've located the fuel filter. tomorrow I'll blow some air through the fuel line and if it turns out to be the filter that I found (got dark) I'll whiz it off and install a new one. Also figured that it's 5 years since I last had it running, so am pretty darned chuffed that its going as well as it is -- even if only for 20 seconds. AND the battery is holding a charge! (And that's not even "Toyota") Thanks again - best regards. Sincerely - Brian

There was plenty of damage on the sump and cross member - I wonder if people understand that just because its a toyota, it doesn't make it a 4x4? Seriously, I had one of these, drove it all around 'stralia. Cruise control was a very large can of fly spray, muddies on the back allowed me to run down creek beds to get the worms and drive through muddy tracks. Once I was on top of this rather steep sand dune, and I watched a nissan patrol 4x4 trying to come up the side over and over. Finally, after failing for the umpteenth time, the guy gets out, storms up to me on foot and asks how the f**k I got up. I then pointed to the track behind me :) shouldv'e seen the look on his face!

This one's spent a long time as a campervan and came with service receipts from Melbourne, Alice Springs, Launceston, Brisbane etc. The sump damage surprised me but the rest of the van is holding up fairly well for 378,000km. Seems to be plenty of life still left in it. Dunno if I'd be comfortable taking it too far off road tho!

@@southerndiy1 We were young and bullet proof when we did this. Today, the seat forward of the donk scares the living hell out of me...imagine a roo! Although we did have an incident when a roo was standing on the road on the other side of a crest so invisible to us as we were heading to Geraldton from Mnt. Magnet and we were saved by the fact the van was struggling up the crest and so was doing only 40km/h when we saw the roo and stopped easily - it had the 2 litre donk. I think yours sports the 2.4L
