Toyota Highlander Passenger Side CV Axle Replacement

2013 Toyota Highlander FWD model. I am changing the passenger side cv axle and this was possible the worst axle I have changed in my life. I had to take the bracket off and beat the axle and bearing out of the support/bracket. It was seized in the bracket with rust and I had to heat and beat this thing. I actually did another one after this one and the exact same thing happened. I think this may be a design flaw or something with these.

THE BEST WAY I FOUND is to soak that bearing and bracket a couple days before. You still drive it, but 2 or 3 sessions of PB Blaster. When you do take it apart the ones I did came right out. When you just go at it without at least an overnight soak......this is what you end up with.

I did one on an 09 Highlander 3.5 liter V6. Carrier bearing completely seized. None of the "tricks" worked. Unbolted the bearing bracket and literally cut the shaft between the bracket and transaxle with a grinder and cutting disk to get everything out. Pulled the middle CV apart, cleaned it up and took the bracket with bearing to a garage with a frame press. They couldn't budge it and they ended up burning out the bearing with a torch. After that, it was an easy job.

I did another one the following week after filming this and it was the same way as the one in my video. It was a pain in the butt and took about 4 hours to get it out. They seize up really bad in these.

Did you replace the rubber mount connected to the bearing support. I replaced my axle and I've been getting bad vibration after beating the heck out the bearing. I can't find the part or part name anywhere for that mount.

@@LuisMaldonado-se7xy No I didn't change mine, but I know what you mean, the small arm with a rubber damper connected to the outboard end of the bearing carrier. It is essentially a transmission mount. I had a little gander, it looks promising. Try that in your word search.

12/28/2023, just fixed the CV axle on my Toyota 98, V6 with out cutting, damage any other things 🎉🎉🎉 You just have be patient enough, from that little hole, punch the bearing hundreds times, w-40 lubricant the hole and bearing both sides hundreds time, Let’s say, if every time you hit it, knock it, lubricant it, the rust bearing going to loose 1 %, eventually, you will get it loose ! I prefer not to cut the axle or engine mount.

Hey man quick question, how much play is normal from the cv axle? I can move mine back and forth from the bar going into the transmission, it was just replaced not long ago by a shop but I’ve been hearing a lot of noises afterwards while driving

Just did one took 2 people with air hammers. A chisel and hammer bit. About 2 minutes it came out..can be done with one person alternating bits

You have to remove the axle to do it. I hate to say that because these axles are pretty hard to remove. They get water in the bearing and it makes it stock in there really good.

@@operationoverhaul yeah I’ve watched other videos of people fighting with them. I guess I got pretty lucky with mine. I did have use a slide hammer. I also started to bang on the bracket where the bearing sits and luckily I saw those dowel pins before I broke them off 🤣. Good video 👍🏽

Yeah I will not do any of those cars without the carrier bearing in hand. t's $20 it'll save you like he did 3 hours and sometimes you just can't even get them out and if you do get them out and the salt states there for s***.

Yeah I have actually done this job a couple of times since this video and I quote a carrier every time.
