Pat, you are an excellent teacher...MORE videos like this man...I'm always learning and you have soooo much to teach in that great mind of yours my friend...you shine here brother! I like how you explain that you can easily do it on the 4 cylinder, but are showing how to do this in case you can't get to it easily! great video. im not a Toyota tech but had an Avalon w a p0341 if I remember rightly. turned out to be a connector issue at the coil. diagged by moving coil and the problem disappeared which led me to the broken tab on the connector. I got "lucky". what you showed here would have been super helpful on that car. I learned something today. TY !!!!

Thank you Patrick. Great job. Have a blessed and safe week. If you ever get a chance to do a video on Toyota computer controlled charging systems would really appreciate it. Short video about 15 minutes testing and system operation. Using wiring diagram and KOEO connector unplugged voltage checks. Then connector plugged in and back probed, KOEO voltage checks. Then connector plugged in and back probed, KOER, using lab scope to check waveforms. Nobody has done any videos for Toyota computer controlled charging systems. Seen plenty of GM and Ford's.

Thankyou this was really helpfull. I'm putting an aftermarket ECU (Haltech Nexus R5) onto a Toyota engine (1GZ-FE) with two igniters (driving 6 coils) and was trying to setup the Ignition output signal (voltage level) from the new ECU and match this to the IGT inputs to the existing igniters. The Toyota service manual for this engine shows the IGT (and IGF) signal in a graph which matches exactly your scope readings of IGT and IGF. The service manual shows a 4 volt peak sqaure wave on the IGT signal which made me curious - was expecting closer to a 5V or even 12V peak - just not 4V. Your scope readings confirm the 4 volt peak sqaure wave on IGT signal. The new ECU can output 5V or 12V to drive the igniters so the 5Volt setting should be close enough.

I stumbled across this video looking for info on a issue I created. I swapped a engine from a 2009 Scion tC into a 2005 Scion tC ( had to use 05 Harness and MAF Sensor) I didn't route the Second O2 sensor wiring correctly and the Power steering pump ate into it. The O2 shorted out the ECM. Popping the 20a EFI fuse I was a few miles from home I threw another fuse in got up the street and it blew again. Now I'm out of 20A fuses and used a 30A fuses I know better but I was just hoping I could make it home and fix the issue at home. Welp I did not make it hope the 30A fuse popped and i had to get a tow. I found the problem removed the intake so I could access the bare wires repaired them then started the car it ran for about 20 minutes and cut off. the fuse did not blow. Cranked it up and drove around the neighborhood got back home let it ran for a bit and it shut off again. Now it wont start at all I read the codes on the ECM and was getting a P code referencing all four Coils A,B,C and D I replaced the ECM (jumped the ODBII pins so the Immobilizer will recognize the ECU) Now I am getting a P code for coil C I wasn't going to bother posting this to a Scion forum once I saw your knowledge on how this stuff works I figured my best bet is to ask you. I know this is a needle in a hay stack type problem so if there's no advice I get it. but any input would greatly be appreciated. At this point i ordered coils online and a Crank Sensor I am getting a tach signal so prolly isnt the CrankPS. I'm assuming the ECM took damage and maybe damaged the coils but I have no idea. Thank you for read

Thanks for making this video PJ. Well explained. Just wanted to ask, so on the IGF signal it's normal to be a shorter pulse (in time) than the IGT as shown on the scope.
@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
Yup. From the ones that i look at, it’s usually 1/2-1/4 the length of the IGT. But I’m not sure if the computer looks for the duration. It could. But I’m not sure if it does.

how did you find out which wire to put your amp clamp on? Does TIS tell you the location of the connector and wire inside the fusebox?
@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
TIS doesn’t tell you directly which wire to go on. But i knew that it had to be on the power feed or the ground. And i knew that the wires left the fuse block and went to the engine from those connectors. So i looked on TIS to find which connector in the fuse block fed power to the ignition coils. Probably 75% of our newer cars have a wire easily accessible from the fuse block.

Question, how does the coil make the igf curcuit switch to ground?
@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
It actually uses a transistor inside of the coil. I'm not sure if the coil sees low voltage on the ground side of the primary circuit and turns the IGF transistor on. Or if the coil sees current flowing through the primary windings and turns the IGF transistor on. But I know 100% that is uses a transistor.
